The Tasting Room is one of those special, unique restaurants that consistently serves eclectic, creative food at reasonable prices. Yes, I have eaten at Volt, perhaps the more publicized of the two restaurants in Frederick, Maryland, but I prefer The Tasting Room. Volt is very expensive, offers minuscule quantities and the service is slow. The Tasting Room offered a creamy mushroom soup that far exceeded any mushroom soup I ever tasted. The salmon served over flavorful risotto with onions and garlic and fresh peas was outstanding. The sesame seed, fresh, homemade bread served with sweet butter was a treat. This restaurant is not to be missed!

  • This was one of our worst
    OpenTable Diner Since 2012
    Dined on 9/22/2012
This was one of our worst dining experiences, despite the fact that food and wine were great. The restaurant was incredibly noisy, tables were so crowded that we were nearly elbow-to-elbow with strangers seated at neighboring tables, we were not comfortable talking because of the close proximity of other people (and the noise as well). The fact that people kept hitting our chairs while trying to squeeze through narrow isles did not help either. Our waitress seemed hurried, and we did not feel like special guests. Neither romantic, nor relaxed.

This place is a little pricey, but the food is worth it. The menu changes regularly due to what is in season. The food, and environment is great. We go here for quite a few special occasions. The steak is the best in the city.

Cannot go to the Tasting Room without having Lobster Whipped Potatoes. Heaven in a martini glass! All the food is beautifully prepared and presented, and tastes as amazing as it looks. I eat here frequently and have never been disappointed. It is somewhat tight quarters, with NO separation between tables, so don't come here for a quiet romantic dinner. High energy is what this place is all about.

This is the second time we've eaten there, once for lunch and once for dinner. Lunch was far better. The dinner scene was very noisy in such a small space and it's crowded. The food is good and there's a fair selection of overly priced wines.

Everything was perfect except for my special quirk about not liking steak to be served on the sizzling platter - I like medium rare meat and it cooks too much on the plate so the last bites are overdone for me. It was a tasty steak though. Other than that, the appetizers, cocktails, salads, and wine were fantastic. They even gave us a slice of cake to celebrate our anniversary. I can't wait to go back and try the rest of the menu.

Service was good but slightly high schoolish. My biggest problem with our meal was the mark up on the wines by the bottle. We ordered the cheapest pinot noir for 41 and it tasted like a cheap pinot noir. there were very few wines under 60 a bottle and several for over 100. We felt ripped off by the quality of the wine and the pricing. Otherwise, the meal was fine. Our meal with a friend (3 of us) who had one beer was over 250.00. We had only one appetizer to share. The price and the quality didn't seem in sync.

TR is easily one of the best restaurants in Frederick. It’s only competitors are Volt and Shab Row Bistro in all of Frederick. The atmosphere is lively and the decor is tastefully modern. The food is distinguishably American. The menu offers classic dishes that are extremely well prepared. TR’s signature dish is the filet mignon. It competes with many you may be familiar with (e.g., Gibson’s, Ruth Chris, Cap Grill, Morton’s, Palm, Mastro’s). Service is excellent: attentive, professional, and well coordinated. TR offers a vast wine selection and unique drinks that are deliberately crafted. An excellent sommelier oversees this - ask him for a wine selection, the outcome will be spot on. Highly recommend.

The waiter was excellent. He allowed me to preview three wines before making my choice to accompany my dinner. The lobster chowder, my appetizer, was light and full of flavor- divine! My steak was cooked to perfection. It was a grand visit on Saturday night and would recommend it to anyone in the Frederick area.

We go to the Tasting Room often because the food is always delicious and the service very attentive. However, we got the table closest to the door and it was so noisy (at lunch time) that we could barely carry on a conversation. If you have a choice, sit further away from the door so you can enjoy your meal!

Have been eating since here regularly since the doors first opened. Excellent food, well prepared, friendly wait staff, extensive wine list, great martinis. The menu is strong but not overly inventive. Seafood, meats, salads, sides. It can be very noisy when the place is packed and some complain that the tables are a bit tight. It is all part of the experience.

What a great place for a first date! The location is perfect for Downtown Frederick. The hosts were warm and welcoming. The food was absolutely delicious. I ordered a salmon dish and it was probably the best salmon I have ever had. My date and I were very pleased with the experience. I would definitely eat at Tasting Room again, and very likely on a date or with the girls.

We had a wonderful time, and will look forward to returning again. This is mostly due to the energetic and polished atmosphere, the courteous and thoughtful service, and the perfectly acceptable food. No martini, plentiful that it may be, is worth $15.00. They are well made, ice-cold, but not made of gold. The choices for the entrees are standard and good, with proportions well suited for a 2-4 course meal. What felt special (something one wouldn't find in any other restaurant of this caliber) were the appetizers, which appeared more dynamic in terms of creativity, treatment, presentation, and flavor. The dessert was charming. From beginning to end, the service is seemless without being overbearing. What a nice time we had.

The wine list is second to none, the ambiance exceptionally convivial, and the cuisine is impeccable!! There is a constant stream of attractive and sophisticated foodies passing by, on their way in and out of this slick and beautiful restaurant!!! Call for a reservation at least 5 days ahead, as everyone must be thinking the same thoughts! Food for thought..try the Lamb Chops, as they are magnificent!!!! Each and every time!!!!!

First time at Tasting Room since it came on Open Table. The food is very good---we all got filet mignon. It was done to perfection! The service was excellent. We got a bottle of wine and cocktails. The wine is pricey---big markup but a large selection. The Maryland crab dip was excellent. Enjoyed the meal and will return.

I went there for lunch and had their fresh bacon appetizer, which i found to be very nice...actually the small but tasty highlight of the meal. This was followed by a steak (fillet) and frites, which while cooked properly lacked seasoning and any real flare in the presentation. I likely will not revisit this restaurant.

Recently had the opportunity to return to the Tasting Room where my wife and I decided to celebrate our 15 year anniversary. We made our reservation via Open Table which was as painless as it possibly could have been. We began with a Bacon, Pork belly appetizer with an apple and blue cheese topping, not bad! For our main course my wife had the Rock fish that was served on a bed of rice while I decided to array away from my normal awesome filet mignon and instead went with a baked macaroni seafood (shrimp, scallops) dish. Both choices were winners and we topped it off with a glass of pinot noir and malbec respectively. Our wait staff were perfect, not to pushy, always available and timed our meals where we could enjoy our conversation!

I enjoyed the server's suggestion...the swordfish with olives and capers. I was disappointed when I saw it was breaded, but I was wrong. It was delicious, as were the mashed potatoes it was served on top of. A bit of arugula added the freshness it needed to balance it. I had the calamari appetizer and it was beautifully prepared. I'd recommend the Tasting Room as a great place to meet for drinks or appetizers (all of them looked wonderful) or lunch. I haven't been there for dinner. The server was very helpful, pleasant and attentive, but not suffocating.
