Being with my GF and sitting side by side w her on a barseat height soft bench at the bar was sweet. the ambiance was intimate and which encourages you to leisurely try different dishes. Dishes, while small, were delicately constructed and served. Service was attentive, and views of an active, bustling interior were entertaining. The dishes we ordered were not adventurous, so can't comment on that. But I enjoyed the pork belly egg rice dish, and the cocktails.

The sake and food menu are wonderful, but the kind owners and ambiance make it even more special. Great, laid-back atmosphere with impeccable Japanese design elements. Went to celebrate a birthday and it was memorable. Enjoyed the grilled tongue, agedashi mochi, and anago-omelette dish especially, but there are lots of accessible (less adventurous) dishes that are equally delicious. Highly recommend!

Much is said about this place. Small, authentic homemade Japanese food, with a lot of seasonal delights. You can judge by the menu that not a lot is being carried elsewhere. Downside is that it REALLY is salty - from BBQs to pickles - and portions are very small, by the standards of many Japanese places in NYC. That said, it's typical izakaya food well suited for sake drinking. Location is kinda off, but it is worth a visit if you are tired of the typical east village/midtown east scene.

a narrow restaurant located in the lower east side. The service is caring and excellent. sit at the bar on very comfortable seats or at small tables. The food is unusual in taste and texture. if you are craving a food adventure then try this place .pickled vegetables too salty. delicious creamy soufflé egg in a broth served in a cup. Lots of soy sauce based broths. sashimi was good. oden (street food in japan)very unusual. Japanese yam and white fish made into a smooth light airy concoction . Tasty and strange as were the other oden dishes. Crispy grilled rice cake very good. I enjoyed the experience in a taste texture adventure but delicious? No. Unusual and tasty? Yes.

I came here to celebrate my 3 year anniversary and I am so glad I did. Food was absolutely phenomenal! I don't eat meat and still thought the food was delicious even if it is a yakatori. Raw fish was very fresh but I thought the stars of the show were the rice and soup dishes. If you are feeling adventurous, get the slimy bomb. Don't pass up their wonderful sake list as well! Also, don't be afraid to ask if they have other sakes off-menu; they will help you find something you like! Try their sake cocktail if you like fruity drinks.

I expected it to be great, but it was even better. You walk up a set of steps then have to ring a doorbell to get it- very exclusive feeling. Then you snuggle up in a booth or at the bar in such cool benches and let the very nice servers help you pick dishes. VERY interesting and authentic Japanese food. Get a suggestion from the sake sommelier for drinks. Really unique and beautiful experience! We ordered so so so much food- we thought the bill would be outrageous but it was totally affordable!

I marked notable wine list but in reality there is no wine list but rather a remarkable Sake list with very different Sakes from all across Japan. The restaurant specializes also in food to accompany Sake and is therefore especially recommend to all who are interested in this genuine Japanese taste.

The food was okay. Unfortunately it wasn't as great as the other reviews led on. My favorites were the chawanmushi and botan ebi. With the ebi, after you eat the sashimi they grill the head and serve it back to you. I was excited about that until the grill person burnt it.

Exceptionally authentic Japanese food, creatively prepared with quality ingredients. The tsukune chicken skewers were a little bland, but that's my only quibble. Toro sashimi was excellent, as was chawanmushi. Atmosphere was little bit rowdy, but we are told that Friday/Saturday nights are like that, while mid-week is more subdued and relaxed. We'll definitely be back.

Three times in the last two months. As a born Japanese, I would endorse the quality of this high grade Izakaya. Great authentic Japanese food, good selection of Sake and attentive service. Well cooked Oden(hot pot) and fresh sashimi with Atsukan(hot Sake) would make you feel that you are at Izakaya in the out skirt of Tokyo, where not everybody knows. A bit pricy, but tickets to Tokyo would cost much much more.

The atmosphere is probably the best part of the restaurant since it's hidden away and you have to press a buzzer to get in. The service is also outstanding since it's so small and tucked away. It would be perfect for a date because of its intimacy. Problems: it's way too expensive and the portions are too small. But the flavors are good and evoke clean, simple Japanese food at its best.

I have visited Japan well over 30 times, and lived part-time in Japan for several years. Yopparai is the real deal - reminds me of the wonderful, hidden gems one finds in Japan. Small, intimate, you feel a part of a secret society. But more so than many places in Japan, this one has an very extensive list of sakes by the glass - and a slightly wider variety of food than typical in Japanese restaurants of this ilk, which tend to specialize in a few dishes or styles of cooking. The owner has worked in the US for a number of years, but his desire it to make this place authentic. He has succeeded! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

This place is great, but you are going to pay for it. Price aside, it's a wonderful place to take a date that's into food. We sat in one of the bar booths built for two (nice touch and executed well, plenty of space to not be on top of each other, but close enough to be intimate) and got to watch the chef's work. The food was outstanding - and I can hear you naysayers saying, but it's just sushi, how can it be different? If you have that mindset, stop reading and go elsewhere, maybe Nobu or Gari or Bond St where you can people watch and have a larger menu. Everything was fresh, delicious and definitely try the crab fried rice!
