We celebrated my husband's birthday dinner at Mistral. I read a lot of mixed reviews but decided to give it a try. The low ratings on Yelp reviews were quite right. We tried the popular tuna tar tar and you cannot even taste the tuna but a lot of sesame seed oil. It was not bad but it could be better. The duck that is so famous was large in portion but lacked taste. In fact my husband did not even finish it and he did not want to take the rest home either. I had the $44 steak and it too lacked flavor. The dessert special was refreshing and good. It is a lot of money for the quality of food. We will not be going back. BTW on a Saturday night, the restaurant was not full. Perhaps Mistral was great once upon a time...

Tasty food though quite pricey, and noise level a bit more than desired. We appreciated the staff relocating us to another table when we expressed a desire for more privacy and enjoyed a special occasion with family.

While there are so many great dining choices in Boston, Mistral is one of my favorites. The food is superb, excellent wine list and attentive staff. I really need to go there more often as I love the dining experience. I have dined at most of the other restaurants in the Group, but I still enjoy returning to Mistral.

My husband & I celebrated my birthday w 5 girls. I care more about service and ambiance on special nights, Mistral exceeded my expectaions as well as my "foodie friends".Our waiter middle aged w grey hair) was basically perfect. He understood every detail of the menu&how it could be modified for special requests. We started w Vueve and then moved into big reds- great selection. The escargot, mussels, clams, duck, stripped bass w shrimp risotto, linguini & clams & cornish game hen were delicious. We dined with guests from Chicago, London, NY, Pittsburgh and Austin and didn't here a single "this is good but it's better at XYZ restaurant." Thanks to Mistral & our server for a relaxing, enjoying, satisfying, delicious meal w ZERO headache!

My husband and I had last been to Mistral years ago and we had had a fantastic dining experience. Service and ambiance still great but food was disappointing this time around. The mussel app was the best part of the meal. The broth was cream based comprised of smoked tomatoes, rich w/o being too heavy on the cream and smoking to overpower the mussels. The pizza was also good. The entrees however, were disappointing. We got the halibut and the pork milanese. Both fell flat on flavor; highly underseasoned. The halibut came topped with fried zucchini blossoms but they must have been fried well in advance because they were cold and all you could taste was the oil. Overall, we'd return for drinks & apps but not for another full meal.

After looking forward to the evening at Mistral, we were a bit disappointed. The staff was wonderful, but the experience left a bit to be desired. The menu was not as inspired as I thought it would be. My Kir Royale (at $20) was mediocre. Both of our entrees were overcooked; the duck was dry and the tenderloin was almost well done. They did comp our dessert, a blueberry cobbler, without our asking. The tables are too close together which added to a high noise level. Probably will not return.

Based on the website I expected a beautiful, scenic, quiet, upscale restaurant with polished service and great food. The food was very good. The place was bustling with a very high noise level and it was very difficult for the two of us to carry on a conversation even though our table was sequestered. The wine list was great but expensive. The restaurant had multiple large groups. At times the sound level was unbearable. Best of all, in mid-July at 90+ degrees, the air-conditioning was not working. I finished my meal drenched in sweat. My friend left her dinner on the table. However, even with perfect AC, I would never go back. This was not elegant dining. The restaurant is ideal for groups of 10 who want to be loud and obnoxious.

As we live in the South End neighborhood we have many options for restaurants but we have been wanting to try Mistral for a while. I'm glad we tried it but not sure I'd go back. Food was good but was disappointed that it was "just good" given the price point. There are so many excellent restaurants in South End that my expectations for Mistral were quite high -- maybe if we hadn't experienced some of the other (better) restaurants we wouldn't have been disappointed by the just okay unimaginative food.

The occasion was a 30th anniversary and Mistral turned out to be a perfect venue for that special occasion. The food was excellent, service by Natalie very personable and informative, and the restaurant topped off our meal with a complimentary sherbert dish to celebrate our night. We both had fish dishes--cod and soft shell crabs--and they were excellent as were the escargot and Crab ravioli appetizers. We understood afterwards why Mistral has been a Boston mainstay for 17 years.

This is my go-to place when my sister and I meet in Boston for the day. We start off with a great brunch at Mistral and head out shopping on Newbury St. I have a 7-year-old son and she has a teenage daughter. They both also love this place. The waiters always treat the kids kindly and let my little guy have one pancake instead of making him get an oversized dish he won't eat. Love that. Plus the home fries and breakfast muffins are delicious!

A perfect night, outside under the stars with an exceptional menu and attentive and knowledgable waiter. We've eaten at many great restaurants around the world and Mistral makes our top recommended list. Inventive combinations that play across the palate. And did I mention the cocktails? Their scotch drink was amazing. And the suggested wine was perfect with both of our dishes. Not inexpensive, but well worth it for a special night.

The restaurant service, food quality and staff are all very good. The cornish game hen and duck were excellent. Also, pasta special also excellent. First time at this restuarant but can see that it's a well run operation. Only thing lacking is that there is nothing "Boston" about it. Mistral could be a restaurant in any City, which is not a bad thing because it would be one of the better restaurants in any city. However, if you're from out of town and want something with a more local feel, this may not be the best choice.

Mistral continues to provide an excellent dining experience. I always tell myself I'll try new appetizers but I can never resist the crab ravioli. The pasta is cooked to perfection and the mix of flavors always leaves me wanting more. The duck entree was superb. It was cooked to crispy perfection which is an absolute must for roast duck (having been disappointed at other venues with a rubbery result). Since I don't eat mushrooms, I asked for a substitute risotto and was accommodated with no problem. I will continue to keep Mistral on my short list of excellent restaurants when you want a great meal and don't mind spending a little extra to get it!!

We live in Los Angeles but travel to Boston frequently to visit family and friends. We always make it a point to visit Mistral and it never ever disappoints. It's no surprise that this has been one of the best restaurants in the city for many years. If you enjoy high quality French-style cooking you can't find better in the New England area. In my experience only Bouchard in Newport, Rhode Island comes close to matching Mistral.

Amazing Tuna Tartar and the Roast Beef, Mashed Potato Caramelized Onion grilled pizza were both a delicious meld of sweet, salty, unami and textures. The sirloin had real "beef" taste with a perfectly seared salty crust. However, the lobster, white asparagus risotto fell very short. It was watery and crunchy at the same time. Flavors didn't meld at all and was quite disappointing. Our waiter was outstanding...professional and efficient as were his assistants. We would come back.

Our reservation was honored on time - the greeting by the staff was exceptional - we were seated at a nice table for two beautifully arranged with sparkling glasses. The wait staff was attentive without being oppressive. The wine and drink list was extensive and well chosen. I had the special pasta appetizer which had the most delicious mushroom sauce. - the rack of lamb with two large double chops done to perfection was the best I ever had. Dessert and coffee topped off a wonderful dining experience. I highly reccommend Mistral.
