We wanted to go a restaurant that fit with the theme of our visit to Washington DC. The name 1789 was what caught out eye. It was a very memorable experience. My children had an opportunity to put some of their cotillion etiquette training to the test. The wait staff was very friendly and helpful. We found 1789 Restaurant to be a restaurant well worth the price.

It was very nice. Menu is a little limited and old-fashioned but in a nice way. There were a couple of tables with loud talkers which was a litte disconcerting. A very nice place for special occasions, e.g., birthdays and romantic dinners. A little off the beaten track which is nice too.

Everything from the Valet service to the wait staff was superb! Special requests were accommodated and our waiter was awesome - not too stuffy! The Bibb lettuce salad is to die for and very filling. The rockfish I ordered was wonderful & the steak my husband ordered was delicious. He didn't much care for the spinach side dish, but then he's not a big spinach eater. The chocolate dessert with the cookie type bottom layer was divine. Overall we had a wonderful time...very relaxing.

This was a very bad dining experience. My husband and I were excited about a romantic evening out, but it turned out to be quite a disappointment. The service was extremely poor. We waited a long time for drinks and a long time to order. My husband received a cocktail that had been made with a flat soda. Our meals were flavorless and uncreative. My husband ordered lobster for his main course. It came out so tough he couldn't cut it with a regular dinner knife. When I finally got the waiter's attention to let him know, he offered my husband a steak knife. We were appalled and he said, "well, what do you want?" We asked for another meal, and received the lobster in the same state. No one ever apologized to us - worst $200 ever spent

we were quickly ushered upstairs to a mostly empty "spill-over" room where we were attended to by an excellent staff...the menu was fine (if somewhat limited) and the food was very good...after our meal we descended the stairs to find a restaurant that was filled with the buzz and atmosphere we had been led to believe our evening would be...I felt cheated by getting stuck in a sterile environment when I was hoping for a taste of 1789...apparently it doesn't pay to be an outsider

Very pricey for average food; first level dining room in major need of a facelift (like eating in a dirty barn with cheap washington DC tourist prints and nice table cloths). Table where I was stuffed had an annoying post that I kept bumping into as I attempted to stomache average+tired food. Wait staff, valet parking and wine list were definitely a plus. $380 for two with Soup, Main, Dessert and a $120 pinot.. If the food were better, I'd request upstairs dining and make it a monthly hot spot.

Excellent restaurant in a very confined location. We went during Restaurant Week and found they had surcharges for most of the more popular selections, so we barely saved any money over the regular menu. The food was exquisite and the service impeccable. The setting, however, was quite cramped, like many of the downtown DC restaurants set in converted townhouses with as many tables fit in as physically possible. Further detracting from the ambiance on the night we went were the plethora of college students; possibly a consequence of Restaurant Week or some school function. Overall, quite good, but not as good as you'd expect.

Excellent, excellent food. The service here is impeccable. The waiter was knowledgeable, prompt, but not pushy. The ambiance is great for a special occassion or for a "grown-up" gathering. I wouldn't recommend it if you have a phobia for sitting very close to other diners. Otherwise, this is definitely one to try!

1789 is an amazing restaurant. We were running very late for our reservation and called the host several times who was very understanding and held our table for us. Once we arrived, the service (i.e., servers, host, and coat check) was the best: attentive, knowledgeable, friendly. We dined during restaurant week and the entire menu was available as food options. The food was delicious. The restaurant is extremely cozy and comfortable. We had a wonderful time and will definitely return and recommend 1789 to everyone!

This was a special dinner for our 39th anniversary. I had ordered flowers to be delivered to the restaurant as well. All the courses of food were outstanding. The service was top notch. The tables are a lttle bit too close together making it difficult to get in and out and you can easily hear conversations next to you. The flowers were already set at our table when we arrived. I highly recommned this as a place for special occasions.
