A word from Burritt Room & Tavern - Mystic Hotel
As the new executive chef at Charlie Palmer’s Burritt Room and one of the Zagat's 30 under 30, Knox was brought in to completely overhaul the tavern’s menu. Armed with first-hand experience of agriculture (growing up near his uncle’s farm in Nebraska) and 10 years working in fine-dining restaurants like Bouchon and Aureole in Las Vegas, the Thomas Keller/Charlie Palmer protégé knows his way around fresh ingredients and how to enhance their flavors with minimal manipulation. “My dishes integrate Charlie’s Progressive American style," he says, "while also incorporating my passion for clean, simple plates with strong flavors and a sense of San Francisco style.” He recently turned his attention to the Burritt Room, where he’s raised the bar on the menu offerings, introducing items that go beyond your standard fare such as fried pork shank with American Ale reduction and asparagus and crispy artichoke salad.

  • Great food, unfortunate lack o'beer

I was pleasantly surprised by the DELICIOUS food. (I'd expected that a "speakeasy" would offer fine designer drinks & beer, but unremarkable food.) Honestly, the salad (apricot-arugula) was one of the Top 10 most delicious salads of all time! And the service was very good. Unfortunately, I was quite unhappy to learn that the beer on tap "just ran out" (at 7:30pm). I have shared more detail about this problem in a private message to the restaurant, as I was quite unhappy that my only other choice was to $14/glass wine).

Chose a dine-about-town lunch menu: Course #1 was poached apricot salad with duck prosciutto, bitter greens and honey mustard vinaigrette..very light and refreshing; Course #2 was citrus miso glazed salmon with rice, bok choy in soy ginger butter sauce.. tasty and nice presentation. Course #3 was chocolate expresso pot au creme with 2 beignets..was simply delectable and well executed..very satisfying. A large, spacious dining room with several curtain drawn booths and also a large lounge in the bar area, reminds me of the old saloon of the west. Wait staff was attentive and professional. Food portions were generous..of the same course, some portions larger than others. All and all, it was a wonderful dining experience.

We picked this restaurant randomly from Open Table because it is new and had live jazz. When we arrived we saw that although the dining room is very open (and a little loud), there were private tables that could be curtained off from the main room. We asked for one of those and were pleasantly surprised to obtain one. That was the beginning of a fabulous experience. The food was absolutely phenomenal. There was not a single item we ordered that was not "the best ever" and we have dined at many superb SF restaurants. We ordered the oysters on the half shell, fried brussel sprout salad, salmon, Petaluma chicken and mustard greens. Our waiter Ryan was accommodating beyond belief, even secured a dessert for us that was not on the menu.

Food was great, service was excellent, loved the private booths. My only gripe: don't charge for re-fills. The soda glasses are small enough to start with and filled with ice, the $3.75 charge for a re-fill was just annoying.

What a lovely restaurant in the modern Mystic Hotel. They have a lovely bar when you get upstairs, which unfortunately we did not get to experience as our table was ready on arrival, but will definitely be back there for a drink because the atmopshere was great with a small jazz band playing in the corner. The restaurant was lovely. It has recently been taken over by Charlie Palmer. They have small booths, and tables squattered around the room at a nice distance so you do not have to hear your neighbours' conversation. We shared a few starters:The dungeness crab and asparagus tart which was quite big for a starter and really tasty and the charcuterie trio For my main I had the lamb, which was absolutely lovely. Great food and service.

The food was quite good. Everyone wholly enjoyed their meal, but we all had the bone-in NY, so many of the other items were not tasted. The service was mediocre, at best. I expected that people would have at least come by to ask how things wee in the first half of dinner. No such luck. This was my first time, and I will try again.

Have been to the Burritt Room three times; Charlie Palmer was there cooking each time. Stand outs that we've tried: cornmeal crust oysters, crab salad, fish entree, wheatberry risotto, pork chop. Only downside is that the bar is so popular and packed that it takes forever to get your drink orders. Also have been to a small party in the bar area and the hors d'oeuvres were outstanding.

"Wonderfully phenomenal" doesn't begin to describe our experience -we absolutely loved this gem of a restaurant including the food, service, and ambiance. Entering through an otherwise unremarkable hotel lobby, guests ascend a winding staircase (elevator also available) and enter a fantastic space with sparkling chandeliers, exposed brick walls, dark wood panels, and cozy seating areas near a long bar. The adjacent main dining room was charming and had a wall of wonderful booths hidden behind velvet curtain enclosures thus creating what felt like a very private, intimate small group dining experience. Our server absolutely nailed every recommendation & we were blown away by the quality & presentation of each dish. We can't wait to return!

The bar and restaurant are tucked away in the Mystic Hotel which is very difficult to find due to a tiny sign outside "Mystic." You wouldn't even know it is a hotel and that there might be a restaurant inside. Our servers were very nice and efficient however the food was not great. The crab and endive salad looked beautiful but lacked flavor. The roast chicken breast was quite dry. The pork chop was a generous size and was cooked nicely however it also lacked flavor though the accompanying beans were very tasty. The wine prices were marked up so high which is a turn off. We wanted to give this new restaurant a try since Charlie Palmer is a very well known and respected chef however since we were disappointed we won't be returning

The entrance to the restaurant is up the stairs from the lobby which puts you into the bar. It isn't clear that the maitre'd is across the room to the left. Once we got there and got seated, the restaurant itself is very warm and inviting. The tables are spaced sufficiently that you don't feel crowded and the bar is far enough away that we could hear the jazz trio but weren't overwhelmed by bar noise. The food was good -- the bone in steak was one of the best we've ever had, the lamb shoulder which the server called amazing was good just not amazing and the scallops were very good. Desserts were excellent -- the banana parfait was incredible and the strawberry rhubarb crisp with pistachio ice cream was perfect. Service lazy.

We enjoyed Burritt's. Many of the dishes are very creative, and this is what attracted us in the first place. The bar itself is very colorful and its history makes it particularly interesting, but it is much too noisy for our tastes. However, the restaurant itself was quieter even if still quite loud. The wait staff was outstanding - friendly and knowledgeable about both food and drink. We enjoyed the food, but more for the ingenuity than the actual flavors and textures.

We were excited and curious to try this new restaurant and were not disappointed. The ambiance was fun and interesting. We loved the special historic cocktails in the lounge and with the live music it was a fun start. We were able to sit in one of the curtained rooms for dinner which helped with the noise level and gave us privacy. The service in the dining room was very attentive and knowledgeable. The appetizers were superb: the warm asparagus salad, the crab salad and the oysters. The Nage (seafood soup) was a little overdone. My filet was cooked perfectly and the lamb melts in your mouth. All in all a great experience and we will go back.

Went here with couple of friends who just relocated to the area. Service was fantastic and food overall was really good. Ordered the beef shoulder and kamapchi appetizers. No complaints. Only hitch in the night was an order of parmesan fries not making out with our dinner. Server (who was really attentive) comped it without prompting and we did get it just a minute or two after starting into our mains. Some really tasty cocktails here too.

Greeted by a rockin' jazz trio, I went for a solo dining experience. Great curtained booths available for parties of 4-6. The couple of parties of 8 already there were having a great time working their way through the cocktail and wine menus. I had the chicken entree, which was mixed. The artichoke puree was tasty, and the deep fried chicken was juicy and delicious. The pan-fried chicken was very salty, but the skin was nicely crisped, and eating it with the accompanying broccolini toned it down. Very attentive and numerous wait staff. Cost to portion size ratio is high, so I'd reserve this one for special occasions in future.

I have been coming to the Burritt room for a while- great cocktails, even if it does take 45 minutes to get your drink on a Tuesday, but still casual, cool and a great gem to bring colleagues and friends. I was very excited to try their new restaurant, yet very disappointed when I actual brought colleagues for a business dinner. Food was incredibly overpriced ($30+ entrees) and incredibly small portions and sub par flavor for the prices. Service was incredibly spotty and with tons of kinks. Nothing to write home about. There are MUCH better restaurants in this city- you should skip this one- at least until they work out the kinks.

We really enjoyed every one of the seven items we ordered, especially the crab tart (appetizer) and brussel sprout salad. We also had a beef shoulder steak, new to us, which was delicious. They are just opened so the service can be a little confused but they were very aware of it. The ladies at the front were warm and welcoming and our cocktails were delicious. We liked the noise level - vibrant but we could easily hold a conversation between the two of us. Wine list was short, in a positive way, and well chosen. Very nice that there is actually an attached bar to wait in instead of being crammed to the side of a restaurant for a drink.

The food was excellent. We had the crab salad which tasted extremely fresh and came with little fried onions, what's not to like. I had a steak which was actually cooked medium rare, something few restaurants get right. It came with three asparagus stalks, some type of mushroom that I gave to my wife and toast. I'm not sure why they included toast but it was good. The sauce was bernaise with some balsamic drizzled on it, also very good. My wife had the chicken which was also very good. I don't recall what the chicken came with. But we did get the fries which are perfectly cooked and came with some really outstanding garlic aoli. Dessert was a flourless chocalate cake with espresso ice cream which I recommend if you go there.
