This is one of our favorite places in Palo Alto. On our most recent visit, we took our dog and sat at one of the tables outside. It was lovely. All of the dishes are always consistently good, and the quality is excellent for the price. Highly recommended!

I have been going here for nearly 15 years and never had a bad meal. Know all the servers and the owner, and they remember me, which is nice. The lamb is great, fish is good, pastas are great. Went just last month and the menu seems to have even more selections. If you sit by the door, it can be a little drafty in cold weather. If you are just two people, sit in the back on the left, and sooner or later you will be chatting with the people at the next table (or left completely alone too). Great location near Apple and Symantec, etc. The location is deceptive, so if you are going for the first time, it's to the right of Lee's Sandwiches in a small strip mall near the corner of Stevens Creek and Torre Avenue.

  • I was really disappointed
    OpenTable Diner Since 2007VIP

I was really disappointed on this visit: the serving size of my salmon entree had shrunk considerably since my last visit and the price increased $3.00, the wine pours were stingy at $10 a glass and the chocolate mousse had an odd texture. One plus was the great service. No one ordered their signature appetizer, Susan's Downfall, any longer as the last time we had it it was missing a key ingredient and tasted bland. When our group is paying $200 for lunch, we expect better. I'll think twice before returning.

  • Went here with a girlfriend

Went here with a girlfriend for an impromptu dinner. The waiters were very professional and checked in on us throughout the meal. The food was really good, I had a smoked salmon pasta special that was excellent, good portion sizes, not too big. It's not in the heart of downtown Palo Alto, but it was very close to Caltrain which was nice for me to jump on the train straight from the restaurant.

First time there. Went with a girlfriend for an early dinner on a Sunday night. As other reviewers said, doesn't look like much from outside, but inside it's warm, vibrant, and friendly--as is the staff! We loved our time here and will be back for more carpaccio, pasta and salad. Plus, they had a decadent chocolate Lava cake with huckleberry sauce that my husband just has to try!

I liked it for what it was-- a nice, local restaurant with pretty good food and a nice wine list. Not too expensive, not pretentious. Was it incredible? No. But was it a place I could feel comfortable going again and again? Yes.

We've been here 3-4 times and it seems to pay to come on the early side. They seem a bit short-staffed and being in the late crowd risks getting ignored, long waiting time for food, etc. But the food really is worth it, and the prices are reasonable.

  • The food and service here

The food and service here were wonderful - staff really did a good job of being solicitous without being annoying. Good wine list too. Down side: We were a party of two on a Friday night and found ourselves a bit jammed in between two other couples - it's a small restaurant but kinda made the dinner feel more "public". It was also fairly loud (we were in the side room). Would certainly go back, tho likely ask for a better table.

Sean and Kirk still have what it takes! I used to eat lunch/dinner here a couple of times a month when my company (PDI/DreamWorks) was located on Park Blvd. I haven't been back in about 5 years since my company moved to Redwood City. I was asked to setup a business dinner and I chose Cafe Pro Bono, and couldn't wait for the date to have the linguini and clams. That's just what I ordered and it was consistently perfect like I remember. The clams were perfectly tender and the broth was the right balance that didn't allow the dish to smell fishy. It was a busy Tuesday night, which I didn't expect, which made it a tad noisy for a business meeting. Our meeting was successful and I'm glad to see that others appreciate what Sean & Kirk have done.

This was a second or third choice because of the busy President's Weekend but we were very pleasantly surprised with the dinner. We actually said "why don't we come here more often?" Don't miss the gorgonzola raviolis either as appetizer or main.

Food is always good. Susan's Downfall - a pasta dish - is my downfall. The polenta is also great. The service - especially for lunch time when you have to get back to work - is just a little on the slow side. Also, getting refills for drinks is hard. Overall however, I have taken folks there, and no one ever seems to get a meal that they don't like.

Although Cafe Pro Bono has been in this location for many years, again, it was excellent as always. I like the lunch specials-they are always healthy, creative and reasonably priced for the quality. I had the duck confit salad. The duck had a light cherry/pomegranate sauce on top of it. It was perfectly done and delicious. The salad had a variety of interesting greens with light dressing. The service is always attentive without being overbearing. I appreciate the manager always thanking me for coming as well. Keep up the good work!

Cafe Pro Bono was wonderful. We have been dining at the restaurant for years and it is consistently good. My husband's favorite is the horseradish crusted Salmon which I have sampled many times. Delicious. I always order their homemade pasta when it is on their special meal. They make the best homemade pastas I've had in years and the quantity is always perfect. They have a variety of desserts on the menu. My favorite is the Zabaglione, you can only order for two. It's worth it. It is so good, I could probably eat both. The service is attentive to your needs, and not overwhelming. The owners, Akif and Shawn, visit every table and thank you for coming. Give it a try, you will not be sorry.

At 5:30, we were too early to hear nightly specials. But when we overheard them, ten minutes later, being described to a nearby table, the waitstaff graciously changed our choice to one that seemed much more interesting. It was delicious, and we appreciated this effort.
