The room is very pretty, but the food not as good as usual. Appetizer was very over salted. Scallops were undercooked; one diner had to return his meat because it was tough. Accompanying vegetables were skimpy. Usually better than this. Overpriced for what we got. Again, normally it is quite fine, must have been an off night. Will try again, but perhaps wait a while.

As we ordered our aperitifs, we told the server that we would enjoy "slow food" - time to relax, converse before and between courses. What a joke. We had just begun to sip the aperitifs when the appetizer course arrived: SERIOUSLY - 4 minutes after we placed the order. Obviously, nothing was prepared to order - food was just plated and shoved along. Once again we reminded the server of the desire for a relaxed dining pace - useless. The entrees arrived while we were still finishing our appetizers. Was the server clueless, too lazy to convey our request to the kitchen, or does the kitchen just sling the hash as fast as possible regardless of diner preference? Hmmm. Obviously, we won't be back unless we are in a real big hurry.

My frustration level was increasing while roaming the area seeking a parking space. However the rest of the evening went better. The service was knowledgeable and friendly, apologized for running out of scallops, and suggested the salmon as a substitute. It was excellent. During the evening I noted especially the attentive service from the waitress and dining room helpers.

Hadn't been to the Old Mill Room in years. Nice to see the food was still very well prepared; the ambiance is wonderful if you like the feel of a mountain lodge; its quiet compared to a lot of todays restaurants and the service was impeccable. Not to be missed.

My party and I ate here on the last night of a trip through 18th century gems including Monticello and Colonial Williamsburg. We were all tired, and possibly not at our best after a week of travel and restaurant eating. However, that did not diminish our appreciation for the lovely setting, the attentive service and the delicious and inventive food offerings. Recommended highly to anyone.

This lovely restaurant is owned and run by the University of VA. The entire facility is well-maintained and the main dining room is very elegant and rustic with much history. Be sure to ask your server about the beams on the ceiling. Our meals were very good. The fall gnocchi was prepared with a sage-brown butter sauce, mushrooms and mandarin oranges. It was topped with arugula that had a light dressing. One member of our party had the veal chop and he said that it was prepared perfectly. The grill scallop entrée was beautifully presented, but the portion was rather skimpy given the charge. Dessert of the chocolate tart was rich and the serving was generous. A spiced cake with nutmeg ice cream and the hit of the evening.

It's fancy and elegant, but not ritzy. The food my wife and I had was superb. And the host accommodated my request to be seated by the fireplace. I'm pretty sure that my wife and I were the only people in there under 60, but that's just fine. :)

A dark evening (fall) in a dimly lit area had us traveling well under the 10 mile speed limit to find a sign indicating where the restaurant was in relation to the various buildings on the property. That coupled with the FULL parking lots (due to a wedding) had us parking a ways from the restaurant. However, we would both gladly do it all over again to have the wonderful experience that ensuedany day of the week. All of the staff, especially our waiter Doug, were extremely polite and pleasant; and the food - positively excellent! We were celebrating a small big-city-escape as well as our growing family and the staff made sure it we had just that. Be sure to order multiple courses and settle in for/savor a wonderful dining experience.

While this restaurant is historic, staffed well for large crowds - the food in itself is just a little off for the price. What is meant by that is the following: Some of our guests had the Lobster Bisque - the soup itself did not have the true coastal flavor - the lobster chunk in the center tasted as if it had been frozen for quite some time. Some of our guests had the trout- which had a sauce on it - the sauce was overbearing, thus the taste of the trout was not discernible. Some of our guests had the filet - which looked great, however they all commented it was just "ok". We have dined here many times in the past with the food being a 5 star quality - the service was spot on - perhaps they just had an off night.

If you like to try new and strange meals and desserts then you might enjoy Boars Head Inn. But if you're like me and you like the simple things then this is not the place to go. The Lobster Bisque was good. There wasn't anything on the dinner menu that appealed to me so I asked for a baked sweet potato. What I received looked like a baked sweet potato but tasted like a regular baked potato--not at all sweet. The dessert menu was disheartening. Peanut Butter & Jelly Cheesecake? Chocolate Pecan? Everything was some awful combination or made with a liquor. Why can't restaurants just carry regular cheesecake and regular chocolate cake? I guess the chef want to be different and stand out in his or her own way.

We had dinner last weekend and hope to make it back over the holidays. We stayed at the Boars Head and have nothing but glowing things to say. The room as large and well appointed, even though the hallways to each room were a bit "creepy". We would have enjoyed sitting at the bar at the Bistro 1834? but it's very small so we weren't able to hang out after dinner to have a drink...a bit disappointing but nonetheless, we had a great time and plan to return. BTW, the dinner was delicious from start to finish and the wait staff was spot on.

Our first visit was on our honeymoon, and we've been back every wedding anniversary since. I booked the Old Mill Room for my mom's bday. I almost cancelled at the last minute due to another recommendation for a nearby place. I was VERY glad I did not. The atmosphere is awesome, you do need to dress appropriately and it was not loud which good for my parents. The food and presentation was outstanding. The filet melts in your mouth, the salads and soups are presented in a very creative fashion. They taste incredible as well. The service by Gary was outstanding, We never wanted for anything and it seemed he was right beside us the whole time. We went to the Mill Room as a request from my dad for his 88th birthday. The prime rib and veal chop were good. Unfortunately many of the other dishes were just mediocre at best. Lobster bisque was better at a local restaurant on 29 N. The vegetables that came with the dishes were over-cooked. Though there were many fish dishes, other vegetarian choices were very limited. Great desserts and the birthday presentation was thoughtful.

On this visit it did not live up to my fond memories. We drove from Richmond for a quiet evening at one of our favorites only to be dissappointed ... with a nearby crying baby and a watergirl's strong perfume, I could not finish my meal. The food was fine, but no memorable flavor or distinctive execution. My partner enjoyed his scallop appetizer and pork loin entree. The summer peach salad arrived with an unripe, hard, slightly grilled peach and a pile of nondescript greens. My veal chop was lovely, but lacked any flavor and the vidalia onion casserole is nothing more than sauteed onions sprinkled with bread crumbs in a cute little iron skillet. It's been so much better .. With expectations dashed, it was too pricey for this experience.
