Second time there and first for my bride of 27 years. We thoroughly enjoyed it, but it was tough going back to work afterwards. Neither one of us needed dinner that night. Bread pudding had been recommended both times and didn't disappoint. We both really liked the salmon.

If you like to try new and strange meals and desserts then you might enjoy Boars Head Inn. But if you're like me and you like the simple things then this is not the place to go. The Lobster Bisque was good. There wasn't anything on the dinner menu that appealed to me so I asked for a baked sweet potato. What I received looked like a baked sweet potato but tasted like a regular baked potato--not at all sweet. The dessert menu was disheartening. Peanut Butter & Jelly Cheesecake? Chocolate Pecan? Everything was some awful combination or made with a liquor. Why can't restaurants just carry regular cheesecake and regular chocolate cake? I guess the chef want to be different and stand out in his or her own way.

If you happen to be in Charlottesville, VA, and want a lovely dining experience, don't miss the Old Mill Room at the Boar's Head Inn. Owned by the University of Virginia, the Boar's Head Inn exudes "southern hospitality". We took guests there and lingered over dinner for over three hours, never feeling rushed. It's a very special place!

We had dinner last weekend and hope to make it back over the holidays. We stayed at the Boars Head and have nothing but glowing things to say. The room as large and well appointed, even though the hallways to each room were a bit "creepy". We would have enjoyed sitting at the bar at the Bistro 1834? but it's very small so we weren't able to hang out after dinner to have a drink...a bit disappointing but nonetheless, we had a great time and plan to return. BTW, the dinner was delicious from start to finish and the wait staff was spot on.

The Old Mill Room @ the Boar's Head is a wonderful dining experience -- and we've never been disappointed. Our first visit was on our honeymoon, and we've been back every wedding anniversary since. They are accommodating to special requests, the food is outstanding and I love it when the server brings out a special appetizer from the chef for us to try. We will continue to celebrate our anniversaries at the Old Mill Room.

I booked the Old Mill Room for my mom's bday. I almost cancelled at the last minute due to another recommendation for a nearby place. I was VERY glad I did not. The atmosphere is awesome, you do need to dress appropriately and it was not loud which good for my parents. The food and presentation was outstanding. The filet melts in your mouth, the salads and soups are presented in a very creative fashion. They taste incredible as well. The service by Gary was outstanding, We never wanted for anything and it seemed he was right beside us the whole time. With the great food, great service and atmosphere, the Old Mill Room makes a special occassion even better!!!

We went to the Mill Room as a request from my dad for his 88th birthday. The prime rib and veal chop were good. Unfortunately many of the other dishes were just mediocre at best. Lobster bisque was better at a local restaurant on 29 N. The vegetables that came with the dishes were over-cooked. Though there were many fish dishes, other vegetarian choices were very limited. Great desserts and the birthday presentation was thoughtful.

On this visit it did not live up to my fond memories. We drove from Richmond for a quiet evening at one of our favorites only to be dissappointed ... with a nearby crying baby and a watergirl's strong perfume, I could not finish my meal. The food was fine, but no memorable flavor or distinctive execution. My partner enjoyed his scallop appetizer and pork loin entree. The summer peach salad arrived with an unripe, hard, slightly grilled peach and a pile of nondescript greens. My veal chop was lovely, but lacked any flavor and the vidalia onion casserole is nothing more than sauteed onions sprinkled with bread crumbs in a cute little iron skillet. It's been so much better .. With expectations dashed, it was too pricey for this experience.

We drove over from Richmond to have lunch for our 36th wedding anniversary and were not disapppointed. We have eaten here a hafl dozen times over the years and always enjoy it so much. This time the corn and crab chowder was a standout, but all the foods on the extravagant buffet are delicious. And the service is attentive without being in the least intrusive which I truly appreciate.

We're certain, you glad we went, but the reality turned out to be less than the reputation. The service and friendliness of the staff is certainly "white glove".The wine list is overpriced, although they are very supportive of Virginia wines. The entrees were priced at a minimum of $35.. The cost of this meal came to around $200. Unfortunately, not a single dish made sense (except the wine). The cold potato soup should have been served hot, the Lamb dish was fried (overcooked) and looked like a "chimichanga" and the veal shank, although tasty, was served in a bowl. Ever try to cut a long bone shank in a bowl? It's quite a balancing act. The experience at the Boars Head is certainly different than the legend.

Unparalleled service and atmosphere. Attentive and gracious but not suffocating. One of the most satisfying dining experiences in Virginia or anywhere. Interesting menu with all items well prepared and presented. Good size portions. Even wine by the glass = a seriously large pour. Any problem? No problem. The staff attends to every request without implicating the guest's neurosis. Afterwards, you're free to wander the Inn's grounds and check out the ponds, bridges, etc. For all the hype from the downtown foodie and grunge scene, THIS is what people think of when they think of Charlottesville. Highest recommendation.

My husband took me for the moderately priced lunch buffet. Since it was the 4th of July there weren't many people in the restaurant. This was an added bonus for us. The food was very delicious and unique, from the soups to the desserts and everything in between. The waitresses were very attentive but not overly. It was a very pleasant dining experience. We plan to return sooner than next year's anniversary! Yum!

We entered the bistro bar at 7 PM to have a cocktail before our 7:30 reservation in the Old Mill Room. Watching the single female bartender try to handle the volume from the Mill Room, the bistro and the bar guests was painful to witness. We finally got our drinks at 7:30. I was astonished by the lack of management presence and appalled by the money they were leaving in the guests pockets by not being capable of delivering prompt service. The food mainly average, the foie gras the clumsiest execution of a luxury ingredient I have encountered. Served with apples and caramel - not a gastrique, a cloyingly sweet, over-reduced, dessert caramel. Too thinly sliced to be seared rare - served well done, cradled in a curved piece of stale toast.

Overall, the dining experience was disappointing. I found it odd that all of the tables were so far apart from each other. Not that I want to be sitting on top of other diners but the spacing felt isolating. The lighting in the room was way too bright. The lobster bisque which was excellent. Our server recommended a very nice bottle of wine. My husband ordered the quail appetizer and said it had little to no flavor. I ordered the trout special for my entree and it too, had little flavor. My husband did like his scallops entree which was the special that day but thought that it would have been better if there had been more flavor. Our server, a tall, thin, attractive woman, was excellent. I recommend she work in a better restaurant
