I have frequent this restaurant many times with clients and always had a pleasant experience. When planning our recent girls outing I knew this restaurant would be our first stop. The other ladies had never visited The Boar's Head Inn and were very excited to try something new.We made our reservation through open table and it went very smoothly.Upon arrival however, there were several hostesses at the desk and no one spoke, I had to tell them we had a reservation and our name, still not a word, the hostess walked us to the table gave us a menu and walked away. The whole time the atmosphere felt very tensed. Our group decided on the buffet, everything was delicious with the exception of the hair cooked into my meat, the manager apologized.

I frequently take groups from work to the Old Mill Room for the buffet lunch -- it's a wonderful favorite, and this time was no exception. Only downside was that the proteins in the hot line of the buffet weren't quite as good as they usually are. Overall, though, everything was great.

Having dined at Boar's head in the past, we were quite disappointed with the cuisine. I would say it was bland to not good. Halibut was dry and "fishy". Key lime cheesecake was reminiscent of Sarah Lee. The $350+ for two Bill was certainly not reflected in the uniqueness or quality of the food. Also, our server was exceptionally chatty.

From the initial greeting by our server Nancy, to dessert, we were pleased. Delicious local fare and plate presentations impressive. Coconut pineapple dessert! My creme brulee' was served with a box of tissues. Our daughter had called the restaurant earlier because she wanted to give us dessert for our 26th anniversary. Sweet surprise for a delightful evening!

I wanted to give my 11 year old granddaughter a special experience for her birthday. She was pleased and that's what's importance. For me the pan seared halibut was soft and white. I expected some carmelization or crispness on the outside. Instead it seemed steamed. Also when I asked for a non-wheat alternative to the wheat flour bread, they had none--not even a rice cracker. The wine by the glass choices at $10-12.00 each were pedestrian choices that Applebees would have. When the bill is over $125.00 for 2 people, I thought it would be more special. Alice D.

I thought I'd try a new tradition by bringing my mom and daughters to the Old Mill room after Grandparents' Day at school (as many families do). We were sat off the main dining room with the air conditioning blowing on us the entire meal. I asked the waitress to see about turning it down but she said it was difficult and that she'd tell the manager (it was never turned down). It was probably 10 degrees colder than the main dining room. The food from the buffet was mediocre at best and everything was cold. Service was very slow though the waitress was pleasant. I will not return.

Our buffet lunch at The Boar's Head was a treat, as ever. This time, as usual, there was a great variety of dishes to choose from, the food was delicious (with rather dry pork as the only exception), and the desserts were irresistible--particularly the bread pudding, which seems to be famous and, for us, almost a reason by itself for making the 50+ mile trip! The attentiveness of the staff makes one feel like royalty. This, together with the graceful setting, has never failed to impress friends whom we have brought there.

We were looking forward to a superior dining experience at a highly recommended establishment, but it did not meet our expectations. Service and ambiance were wonderful. The presentation of all the courses was excellent, but our palates were not satisfied. Perhaps this was because our preferences are not in line with current cuisine style, but you be the judge. A lobster bisque was served lukewarm; we prefer our hot soups hot. A trout was very dry and charred, although the underlying lobster succotash and lobster pernod sauce were delightful. A halibut was served with a clam source that was so salty, the existence of any subtle flavors was undetectable.

This is one of those restaurants that should be first on the list for very special occasions. It's not cheap, but then it's not unreasonable unless of course you order up a nice bottle of wine or drinks to go with and then you can expect to pay $100 person or more by the time your done. However the menu is filled with wonderfully prepared dishes and the service is just the best in Charlottesville. I had let the restaurant know that we were celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary and that I had proposed to my bride to be at the restaurant. Everyone knew our name and congratulated us on the happy event. That was most special and made me look like I had planned it all elaborately. Really excellent service and very good food.

We arrived and were seated at a lovely table in front of the fireplace which was going and wood continued to be added all evening. We started out with lobster bisque that was delicious but could have used a little sherry. We also had the duck breast that was quite good. The breast was not rare but was not overcooked. My husband got the lamb shank that was cooked perfectly. It was very tender and fell off the bone and was not overpowered by a sauce. I ventured for the rockfish that was served with clam broth and onion over a chorizo potato cake served in a bowl. It was an unusual way of serving but was light and not overcooked. The service was warm and not too attentive. Overall it was a nice experience.

The food was above average but not the best I've ever had. The ambiance was what we expected. It is a great place if you are looking for a formal dining option. Many times restaurants are drafty. However, the temperature inside the Old Mill Room was cozy even on a colder night. The service was good. We ordered the all inclusive dinner option which we believed included a four course meal paired with a selection of Virginia wines. However, when the waitress delivered the check we were charged $19.00 for two desserts.

I'd previously dined at the Boars Head Inns Old Mill Room for a holiday luncheon in 2012. The buffet was amazing and I promised myself I'd return the following year. Unfortunately, I'd missed that chance but decided to treat myself to a pre birthday lunch with my daughter. The servers were prompt and friendly. The salad bar was fresh with a good selection of raw vegetables. The hot food was not hot, the chicken and sauce were room temperature at best. The mashed potatoes were delicious but only warm. The onion soup wasn't hot either. Compared to my first experience dining in the Old Mill Room this visit paled in comparison.
