Food has taken a dive since I was last there a couple months ago. It now mostly tastes like a corner Chinese dive since soy sauce has been added to almost all dishes (which of course limited the dishes our gluten-intolerant person could order). Of course there are some exceptions such as the edamame hummus, but I don't think we'll be returning for a while, in spite of the good service, and the chef's offer to provide a steamed fish or scallops to fill in for what used to be 6-8 very tasty gluten free alternatives. Sorry!

Had a great time... Loved how easy open table is and the connection with the restraunts. Food was good, but slow... Our sushi came after our main course did...? Our first date and both of our first times at Umami... We will have to come back again sometime! :) Thanks, Dan

    OpenTable Diner Since 2002

Hostess was very nice but seemed to be more or less left to do everything for everyone--some of our food came out really late, and it was hard to get drinks refilled more than sporadically. She seemed to be, from what we could see, the only person in charge of that for all the tables on the main floor, plus seating people and getting them settled. Too much for one person!

    OpenTable Diner Since 2007

We were excited to dine here on a recent trip from San Diego. We were given a choice of upstairs or downstairs seating and the overly loud music was turned down at our request. The miso ramen soup was wonderful and unique--being a bit spicy! The Korean hot pot tasted a bit like Mexican machaca--very homey. The Kobe tartar was great as well. The scallops with Mandarin was overpowered by sesame oil--ditto the asparagus noodles. Our mojito and prosecco cocktails were excellent. Overall, a treat!

    OpenTable Diner Since 2006

We were seated in a corner area that had 2 tables with a very low ceiling. We were a table of 5 girls, enjoying a nice girls night out. Our neighboring table was a loud group of 6 guys and 2 girls, talking so loud I had to scream across the table to just speak with my friends. We let the waitress know, she was not able to change our tables. It was a horrible experience. If you do choose to go to Umami, make sure they don't seat you in the corner on the first floor.

Food was consistently very good, with the exception of the black cod that had to be sent back as it was excessively gummy. The night we dined the bathrooms were out of service, which forced an awkward one-block trip in the rain to another restaurant to use their facilities. The server was ok but not terribly familiar with the dishes and short on good recommendations. Overall a good neighborhood spot with upside potential but still some kinks to work out.

I liked the place, kinda dark but private romantic feel. However, I was expecting more Japanese cuisine. What I found was the food was much more fusion-infused. Food was still very good.

Unlike most Japanese restaurants, this place has a fabulous offering of items outside the normal roll and teriyaki standards. However, they do classics quite well also which can be evidenced by the outstanding pot stickers. (Everyone I take there wants to get a second order.) The sides---especially the fried rice, brussel sprouts and papaya salad are also amazing. I've eaten here 5 times and it has been outstanding every time, hands-down. Also there are some specialty cocktails and good wine selections which are a rare accompaniment to most Japanese meals in this town.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2004

The food was above average. Although billed as moderately priced, it was very expensive -- $120 (including tip) for two -- with two glasses of wine and no dessert. And neither of us walked away with a feeling of being very full. Finally, the noise is horrific. Although we asked for and were seated in a "quiet area" so we could discuss business, by 8:30 we had to constantly repeat ourselves in order to be understood.

Cramped quarters and slow service were the only negatives of the eating. The food experience made up for it with delicious cocktails, the mango mojito being especially tasty. The sashimi yellow-fin tuna was some of the fattiest and most delicious I have eaten. From the non-sushi menu I recommend any of the beef dishes, especially the Kobe Beef Sliders.

The food was excellent, healthy and tasty. There was only one server for the upstairs, so she was a little maxed out, but she really hustled to keep up as best she could and overall we had a great experience. My friends hadn't eaten there before and both were very impressed. I'll be back.
