Servers were pleasant but the most inept I have ever seen. We were offered dessert when we had never received our entree. The food was bad. The only thing that was acceptable was the salad, and it was nothing special.

The meal was really good - calamari perfectly prepared, main dishes even better. Service was good once all arrived, but the first two were forgotten until the third showed up. Otherwise would have given five stars.

Great place to go!!! We arrived in D.C. 2 hours later than we expected to, but the matre d was still so accommodating and sat us right away and held our table for us. The restaurant was busy but they still accommodated us. We requested an outside table on open table and that is exactly where we were placed. The waiter was knowledgeable about the food and made very tasty recommendations.

Went to La Tomate on Saturday evening when I had family in town. Menu is a great size with options to fit every taste but not just the typical Italian fare. I usually go with the bolognese here but branched out with the sausage & leek rigatoni and it was fantasic. Ceasar salad, branzino and duck ravioli are also favorites. Great experience, as usual, for this convenient, neighborhood staple.

I hadn't tried La Tomate in 10 years, so was eager to see how it has held up. The food was OK, nothing outstanding, and it had a bit of an air that the French call "triste." There weren't too many people there, but it was a good place to talk, and that's what we wanted. We ordered a salad and two appetizers, which were quite good, and the server was pleasant. All in all, not a destination restaurant, but tried and true....just not exciting!

The location was great, loved the view from the bar area. Very accommodating when our plans changed and we needed to push back our reservation. When we got there we were told they were backed up about 20 minutes, we ended up waiting for 40 minutes, but while we were waiting we were given free drinks from the bar. Definitely worth going to, and the wait does not alter my opinion on the place due to their hospitality. Food was delicious, I'd recommend the Buffalo Mozzarella as an appetizer, hands down the best thing I had.

Note: We went on Valentines Day for our first trip. The food was very good! My gripe is with the service on such an occasion--the place is just not set up for a busy dinner night like this. Price for the special menu was reasonable for DC ($38 per person). However, we had to wait 30+ min with reservations, got our entrees 20 min after our appetizers because our waiter forgot, ran out of my desert, and brought my girlfriend the wrong desert all the while insisting that they had told us they had ran out of hers too (which they had not). Granted when I approached the manager and told her about the experience, she was quick to offer us a gift certificate so they could prove they were better than this; which I greatly appreciated!

I went on a weeknight, early in the evening (around 6:30), so the place was pretty quiet. The food was solidly fair. Nothing spectacular but solid. It is kind of pricey, though. Maybe that's pretty standard for restaurants in DuPont circle, (I was visiting DC, so I'm not familiar with the area restaurants).

    rudydaleVIP
    Dined on 1/10/2012
The one draw back to La Tomate is its coast - dinner for four with wine came to $150, which is pretty steep, more than $35pp, so the restaurant could definitely do a little better on pricing its wines - $8 for a glass of wine that only cost that much for a bottle is price gouging. We understand that wine and beer are the profit makers for restaurants, but a little less price gouging would be appreciated.
