Toast is a place you come back to. It's welcoming and comfortable, with interesting food choices and a terrific waitstaff who make you feel cared for but not intruded on. The outdoor seating area is prime College Avenue real estate in good weather, lunch or evening, and with the Toast-provided blanket wraps and heaters, suitable in cooler times as well. They lack draft beer but have a good bottle selection and suitable wine list.

The night we tried Toast for dinner was freezing cold. I told the waiter it was Manhattan weather, but wondered if any of their specialty cocktails would fill the bill--nothing sweet. He brought me a Bella Spezia, and I'm in love. No cherry, big orange peel instead. Fabulous drink. We shared three plates: one salad, one small plate, and one main course, plus pumpkin bread pudding for dessert. It was a great meal. After 7, the places fills up with thirty-somethings, often in tables of four or more.

Four of us came for brunch and sat outside since the weather was beautiful. We ended up spending most of Sunday afternoon there, drinking excellent Bloody Marys and beer and noshing on the white bean spread (to die for), sandwiches, French toast and egg dishes. Unusual and delicious dishes prepared with fresh ingredients, although a little pricey. If you are hungry, you are going to drop a lot of money. Even so, it was perfect for what we wanted-a place to catch up with friends and have something to eat and drink. at a leisurely pace. I'll be back.

The menu is small, but has good variety. We liked everything we had: chicken liver pate, pickled seasonal veggies, red lentil soup, salmon rillettes, warm kale with avocado, and house-made bacon sausage with toasted veggies. The kale was especially delicious with fresh olive oil and sprinkled with white and black sesame seeds. The desserts were very good too, though not unique. The salmon rillettes were a little too oily for my taste, but had good flavor and paired well with grilled Levain, apple slices, and dill. My Chardonnay was served way too cold.

Our first time to Toast, everyone order something different and all claimed them to be very, very good. I liked the subtle flavor combinations that melded together perfectly - no overpowering flavors that prevented the basic ingredients from being appreciated. The only thing we thought could be better was that the portions for the entrées could be a little larger. None of us are 'heavy or big eaters and we were left thinking that the serving sizes didn't really satisfy.j

The menu was great for our group of 5 and I really appreciated our waiter offering our 9 year old mac & cheese. It was a bit small so she ended up eating half my salmon which was amazingly good - she would have been happy eating off the real menu but it was nice to offer it. I also had the soup which was fabulous and got to try a meatball my son ordered - very very good. The only downside is that the restaurant is just too loud. Unless you yell, its too hard for a group of 5 or 6 to really talk with each other. This is not true if you sit outside (the heaters and blankets are nice) and the bar seems fine if you are there early for wine and snacks. Dear Toast, please add something soft to soak up the noise!

The food at Toast is pretty good, but it took forever to get all dinner courses -- pacing of the meal was way off. The waiter apologized each time, but he shouldn't have to do that. Maybe this is a better place as a bar, which is its primary focus anyway. Finally, the food is a bit pricey for what it is, with prices comparable to the nearby Oliveto, a superior restaurant in all ways.

So disappointing was my recent dining experience--everything was over-salted, from appetizers to entrees. Both my companion and I shared this criticism of what would otherwise have been below average, but palatable, dining experience. Also, preparations: sauces, dressings, variety of entrees were poor. The restaurant was full, so the noise level was extremely hight inside. I did like the decor and the friendly and acomodating wait staff.

Loved the food despite the short menu. The vibe here is really good, fun young energy, the kind of place the 30 something foodies go to as well. The service was a little too eager, too hurried, a bit of a buzz kill. And unintentionally so, we thought, because there were a lot of open tables that night. On two occassions the back of the house help tried to remove plates that still had food on them, and despite her sunny personality, the waitress never asked if we wanted refills of wine. However, all in all a very good dining experience and we would come back again. We didn't feel the restaurant should be punished for an off day on the service side.

TOAST is a great combo bar and restaurant. The appetizers are priced so low we ordered them all. Don't miss the chickpeas. Our group of four ordered most things on this sparse menu. Everything was prepared well. Don't miss the chicken. As the evening progressed the whole service team caught our laid back party mood and a large portion of the staff were "toasting" drinks with us. Treat your servers nicely and you will be rewarded. Not a place for smugness. Go and expect to have some fun.

Service -- food prep -- was slow; it wasn't just to us as we heard another woman complain. Nice that they have gluten free rolls for lunch. Sandwiches are ... nothing to write home about. No "devil" in the so-called deviled egg, which was just plain egg salad with a couple pickled onions (my mother made more interesting egg salad forty years ago). BLT was good.

Our waiter was nice he was non attentive to our table and he did not even pay attention to the fact we did not eat our entree. We never had enough water on the table. He did not offer us dessert or offer to adjust the bill based on that we did not eat our food, and stated it was oversalted/overseasoned.The food was cooked well but everything was oversalted/seasoned . We liked this restrauant but it needs attention. Everyone was nice, loved the bar area and outside as dogs are allowed they provide you blankets if you are cold. So I hope the kitchen holds the salt and that the wait staff tightens it up a bit. The waiter did share with us that there were different cooks and that the smoker cooks tend to oversalt their food.

Generally we had a good first experience at Toast. Nothing objectionable with regard to food and drink - and actually loved some of the combinations immensely. But when we arrived (6-ish on a Sunday), it seemed like a buffet restaurant fit for family-night-out. Too many young young children. Maybe another night?? What saved it for me was truly the food (although my first choice option was sold out...). I was surprised our waiter knew VERY LITTLE about the drink menu, but he was prolific with food descriptions.

Went with 5 adults and one 3.5 year old and everybody had a great time. Delicious food, mostly tapas-style. Plenty of kid-friendly food (unless your kid is the type that only eats chicken fingers and french fries). The kid with us loved munching on the meatballs, fried green beans, roasted chicken, bread, and of course the flour-less chocolate cake. The adults loved all of that as well, in addition to several other plates. The atmosphere is energetic, but in a happy and calm way...hip people and foodies out with friends, families, etc. The patio is a great spot and they have blankets you can use if you get a chill. The bar serves up some fantastic cocktails and the wines and beers are all solid picks at reasonable prices. We'll be back.

Originally, we loved this place. Have been about four times. Previously, they had a very nice menu and a great wine list. They recently expanded the restaurant. While this is nice, they obliterated the menu. The menu is extremely limited - four appetizers, four entrees, four deserts and about four red wines. You would think that with so few offerings that the food would be fantastic. Our appetizers were just ok and the chicken entree was good but the pork shoulder entree was awful. It arrived almost boiling hot - unedible and overcooked. Portions are small so we asked for bread with dinner. They used to bring bread when you first sat down - now you have to ask and they charge $3 for two rolls. Very sad. I won't go back.

We have had many brunches at Toast since it opened and were looking forward to trying dinner. Four of us were in our party and we chose to eat inside the new dining room. Although it is attractive and the booths are comfortable the noise level was really distracting. We love the hanging lights and the vaulted ceiling. What is needed is dampening product on the ceiling and the ambiance will be maintained with a lessening of noise level. Next time we will eat outside where it is peaceful! Loved sharing the small and large plates. Each dish was prepared beautifully (chicken, broccoli, meatballs, pork, salad) and the service pleasant and efficient.
