This room provides such great ambiance - a quiet and characterful yet unassuming presence - that it needs to be experienced. The dancing flames of the fireplace light the way to a truly fine dining experience. What the Burj Al Arab in Dubai does with water in its lobby fountain is here reproduced in fire on a much smaller scale.

Our discriminating party of six had an incredible meal and geat time at South Gate! We loved everything from the sleek fire place and kaleidoscope mirrored wall (that lets you spy on everyone in the restaurant and bar) through the perfect chocolate mousse cake prepared by the pasty chef at our advance request accompanied by a Broadway worthy version of happy birthday sung by two very talented hostesses. While the menu is not extensive and the selections are not exotic, the conception and execution of each dish was original and delicious. Standouts were butternut squash flan, flash seared calamari, gemelli with guanciale and a poached egg, and cod with sausage and clams. The bar and bar menu are awesome! We'll be back...soon!

The restaurant is in the newly reburbished Essex Hotel and is beautiful. We've enjoyed cocktails and appetizers in the hotel's lounge so decided to try the restaurant. The service we received was 5 star and the ambiance was wonderful but the food was a disappointment. The menu was the oddest and smallest menu we've ever seen. The appetizers offered were seafood or contained fish except for two. Being allergic to fish I had to pass on the appetizers since the other 2 did not wow me. Out of the 6 entrees offered they were out of 2. The dessert menu was also a disappointment. The bar scene was terrific and would go back there for that or drinks in the lobby but drastic changes to the menu would have to be made to lure us back to dine.

Great decor, food and service. What was once Cafe Botanica has been transformed into an impressive Central Prk destinaion. The only negative is that the wine list is only accessible by a wireless gadget that is unwieldy. For suc a high price point list it would be helpful if there were a printed refernce guide.

Lovely modern room with well spaced tables and a great view of Central Park. Amiable service and discreet - we were doing business and the approaches to and from table were well timed as was the food service. Executive Chef walked the floor twice - a late August Monday no less! Talked well and for just the right amount of time. Very good food- my guest was in heaven and portions were right and had plenty of interesting and deep flavors. I always have the chicken and again it was perfectly cooked with real poultry flavor that I recall from our own farm yard hens. Jim loved the scallops with a well picked frisse salad. And a heirloom tomato and two watermelon sald was full of falvor with ataste kick from fresh herbs, not basil. We will go back

While the ambiance was very nice, the setting very romantic and quite quiet despite the kids presence at many tables, some dishes were "forcing" their taste on you: the fishes were very tasty and well cooked but the added ingredients were not proportionate (too much in this case) and killed some of the taste and flavor of the fish (too much vinegar with the delicious skate). The Foie Gras with the Cherry Coulis and pistachios was perfect though. Toasts as opposed to regular bread would have been the best pairing for this very "velvety" Half cooked Foie Gras! Dessert: again too many flavors kill the flavor. Chocolate Caramel tart with salted caramel ice cream: a delight although the outside of the tart was too "powdery". I had a good tim

Went for restaurant week. Lots of good choices. Had the mixed seafood appetizer with curry--delicious. Had the chicken for a main course-very good, but not exciting. Dessert was a problem. I'm a diabetic and usually, when I ask for some fruit instead of a rich dessert, the restaurant accomodates. No such luck. So I had no dessert. Server was friendly, but really was not that proficcient in English. Everyone enjoyed the lunch. The place was gorgeous.

The room is terrific with plenty of space between tables and the noise level was good. It has an airy feeling. It was the first time I ever ate on a leather-surfaced table which gave a rich feel to the dining experience.

The food was great! We went for lunch during restaurant week. Each plate was delicious. The flavors were excellent as the spicy was well planned. The calamari, clam, mussel appetizer demands that you get every last bite of buttered broth falvored with saffron. The fish was excellent was complimented well the sides. The watermelon dessert was refreshing and palate cleansing. The rose water ice cream was a treat. The chocolate dessert was out of this world, the crunchy topping was a great treat. Plus, at the end of the meal we were given coupons to return. We definitely will.

Interiors were very nice (but absolutely freezing/over air conditioned even though it was a very hot day) but I was thoroughly disappointed with the food. Not one thing on the menu was even good, much less memorable. I do remember that I had some kind of grilled fish served with a strange eggplant dish. I wanted to try the restaurant because my husband had been there for dinner and raved about the innovative and delicious food. I can't imagine having the slightest interest in going back and certainly would not recommend it to anyone.

I had a reservation, made on Open Table, for 11:00. When my party (including my mother because it was a special Mothers Day Brunch) showed up, we saw signs indicating the restaurant was not open until 11:45. When someone finally tried to help us they ushered us to a different restaurant. That too was not open until 11;45. Finally we were shown to the hotel's breakfast buffet and told that we were to dine there. My email from Open Table mentioned a prix fixe menu for $65 including mimosas. Instead we ate an overpriced buffet brunch. The food on the buffet was not replinished unless we asked for it and wasn't that good anyway. We wanted to complain on our way out but there was no one at the door to talk to. I will never go back to SouthGate.

Warm, welcoming place with good food and service. We like the way we are welcomed, the tables are well spaced and comfotable. The menu is short but caters to all, the hotel guests, the fashionistas, and the foodies. The wine list is very good, from just under $40 @ bottle to a lot more - but well chosen and thoughtful with lots of wines from all around the world. We were also impressed that at lunch we were first offered the wine by the glass list list- try the Viogneer. We have recommended it to friends and will be going back. ( Also did not leave the table looking for a snack or a "green thing".)

The menu is tremendously thoughtful with an offering that's subtly different enough from that of any NYC resto worth talking about these days to be well worth a second trip. Service was impeccable with a genuine warmth from the staff that befits such a grand, radiant room. In sum, the dining experience echoes in its own sophisticated, contemporary manner the timelessly elegant Four Seasons Restaurant, adding a level of polished, global sensibility. Ask someone to marry you here.

I thoroughly enjoyed South Gate. The bartender was a hoot and the waitress was quite friendly and helpful. The food was amazing - love the complimentary gougeres they bring to the table and my friend and I loved everything we ordered. Only complaint would be that the foie gras appetizer does not come with toast. That is not something that can be eaten on its own and the bread that they serve is a little heavy for foie gras. An added special treat meeting the Executive Chef, Kerry Heffernan! He was very friendly and we saw him make the rounds to greet everyone and see how they were enjoying themselves. A nice touch. Will definitely be back!
