Atrocious service. I felt as though they were doing me a favor by refilling my coffee (which was not a free refill no less). Have not ever been compelled to write a review for any NYC restaurant in the last four years but the blasé apathetic attitude of the wait staff was far to obnoxious to go ignored. Also don't write "two eggs ANY style" on your menu if you don't allow omelettes!

  • The brunch was delicious:

The brunch was delicious: poached eggs over soft polenta and pancakes with raspberry compote. We sat outside and the waiter cranked the awning so that we were all in direct sunlight which was annoyingly bright and hot for us AND the other 2 outdoor tables (one table moved inside and another table decided not to stay!). Apparently the reason the waiter wouldn't crank the awning back out for shade is because the owner was sitting at the 4th outdoor table and he wanted it that way. I found it VERY STRANGE that the owner would choose his own preference over the requests of 6 of the restaurant's guests.

  • I've been to Select many times
    OpenTable Diner Since 2012
    Dined on 6/3/2012
I've been to Select many times and have always enjoyed myself, as I did this past sunday when I had my birthday brunch there with a party of ten. We'd all ordered a meal and a few rounds of cocktails when a surly waitress appeared and announced that they had a cake cutting fee for plates used, etc. My boyfriend attempted to discreetly tell her that the dessert he brought in was the size of a cupcake and would only require ONE small plate, to which she responded with a few more splutters. I understand a cutting fee but to announce it to the whole table incl. bday girl, when it is obviously a celebration (balloons, AND THE ALLEGED CAKE) and the "cake" does not require cutting or more than one plate/fork is just plain rude and thoughtless.

Great hangout for people watching and having a relaxed meal. Food is very good and not expensive, but bear in mind the service will be slow. Great local spot.

I love Cafe Select. The food is excellent and the staff could not be more accommodating and friendly. It is casual without being sloppy, cool without being pretentious. Nice vibe. The Toberlone mousse is one of the best desserts in the world.

  • Food was unexpectedly good

Food was unexpectedly good but we mostly enjoy the vibrant bar scene. So, that's a pretty good combination. After dinner we went to the "back room" hidden bar...I've never had a drink in the boiler room of a restaurant, but apart from that, which is quite peculiar, nothing special. Fun, though.

I've only been here for brunch, but the three times I have gone have been great experiences. The muesli pancakes are life-changing. Also I love the swiss posters and design of the space- great for graphic design nerds. Only complaints I have are that a few times services was a bit slow, and the coffee could be better, but nothing that won't keep me from coming back.

Did not book in the "fondue area" of the restaurant, though I did not know the distinction existed, based on their Opentable listing. Hostess was extremely rude about it, even though I didn't ask for any special treatment. I only tried to inform her that the Opentable listing was not clear, for the future. She said it was indeed clear, and that I was to blame. Eventually, we got to the "fondue area." Food was alright, but the extra shot of liquer (optional) was administered to the fondue incorrectly (too late) and ruined the fondue we had left. Tasted like death. They gave us some extra fondue to get rid of the taste, but charged us a little extra (for the liquer).

Great food. The only issue I had was that they sat us right near the bar and people from the bar kept hitting the back of my friends chair. It was a little tight in there, but overall a great experience and cool restaurant!

Our waitress was great! Even though it was New Years Eve and she was working with a couple of large group tables she was attentive and spent time explaining any questions we had on the menu. The food was delicious and the ambiance was perfect! Will come back here again!

We were going specifically for fondue but when we arrived, all the tables allocated to that area were already filled. I wish there was a way to specify this option. The food was fine but we really wanted fondue.

Made reservation in morning for their fondue dinner and when I confirmed that afternoon they told me they hadn't recorded it and were unfortunately booked solid. That would have been a bit awkward for the date I'd planned but to their credit they apologized and seated us in this cool little private room. Fondue was delicious, waiter was a pro, vibe was fun, & had a good time, so would happily go back. Perfect place for winter dining either with a group or a date.

The food was really very good (brunch). I had the croque madame, my girlfriend the steak and eggs. They arrived slightly less than hot, which is significant because after it became apparent that the host and waitress were in training and serving too many tables, I decided my line in the sand would be the main course. As long as it did not arrive as cold as my two cups of coffee and as late as our drinks, I was not going to argue. It took about 20 minutes to be served water, which was made worse because after being made to ask for water twice, we were served second to the couple next to us who arrived ten minutes after. If this was a $30 brunch I wouldn't complain, but our experience was well below the $60 price we paid.

My wife is Swiss and we visit her family in Zurich at least twice a year, so this was a delightful find for us. Better than Swizz on West 53rd St. The wait staff took awhile to warm up too, but they did a great job, and the fondue was fabulous. We will be returning to try the raclette. Down side: I would recommend dessert somewhere else, the apple strudel looked like it came out of a pillsbury box.

While the food was great, and the service as good, we were slightly disappointed that our fondue room reservation was not honored as such due to some issue with the room itself. While the issue was unexpected, it would have been nice to be notified ahead of time to give us the chance to decide what to do. Other than that, we had a great time and the service was very good.
