They're tucked away and a little hard to find, we almost passed it so it helps to take a look at the photos here to see what the entryway looks like. Although the place is charming and can take on both a classy & romantic, yet casual feel - the food was left to be desired. The service was attentive and our waiter was very friendly. I ordered the lobster carbonara linguini which didn't have much lobster at all. We heard (and read) that they played live music on Friday nights, unfortunately this wasn't the case when we went. I'd love to give this place another try for date night, but can't really justify the $19 linguini for only what seemed like a couple (tiny) pieces of lobster..

As others have mentioned this is a great find in a quite part of downtown. I picked this place because as a I vegan there were menu options for me and the other two non-vegans. All three of us loved our meals. Service would be higher if we hadn't had to wait so long for our entree. But I would certainly go back.

My party of 5 had a lovely dinner at Finch's before a play at the La Jolla Playhouse. My vegetarian friends appreciated the vegan entree and several appetizers and salads that were made without meat. My carnivore friends were equally pleased with the choices available to them. The food was great, the service friendly, and the atmosphere perfect for a relaxed dinner with friends. We'll definately return again.

Two of us (seniors) dined at Finch's. We loved the quiet al fresco ambiance and excellent service. All menu choices sounded so delicious we had a hard time deciding what to order. We went with the lamb meatball sliders, the prociutto-wrapped roasted asparagus, the tomato-beet gazpacho, and the crab-avocado sopes, all of which we very much enjoyed. Our knowledgeable server suggested the wines. The Federalist Zinfandel was especially delicious. We found the prices reasonable for the quality of food served. As a side note, this space has housed a succession of restaurants over the years. In the past, caged finches were part of the decor. Our server told us the current name "Finch's" does not reflect this, but refers to a person's name.

We had an unfortunate experience at Finches. There was a mixup with our order in the kitchen. Three of us got our meals at the same time, our fourth party member's entree did not arrive until at least 20 minutes after the rest of us received our meals. Everyone was very apologetic but unfortunately it detracted from our experience at the restaurant.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2004
    Dined on 3/30/2012
Having never dined at Finch's, I was very impressed by the ambiance, service, and food. Upon arrival I found that two tables had been set aside for me from which to choose, and was also offered the bar area to sit. The server was very upbeat and outgoing; and made a quick trip to the kitchen when I had a specific question about one of their menu items. My date had seafood risotto; the shrimp and scallops were both very tender and flavorful. I had a nicely done duck breast and the accompanying quinoa was outstanding. Overall, it was a very nice experience and I will be sure to come back during the summer months to enjoy the outdoor patio area. My only criticism is that I felt the pricing for wine by the glass was a bit steep.

The service at Finch's has always been stellar. This is a wine bar so you'd think they'd keep their wines at the proper temperature. The reds are always served too warm. Anybody who knows wines knows that "room temp" is not necessarily the correct temperature to keep red wines.

The restaurant is hidden in plain sight. The bar was small and extremely noisy. We initially wanted to sit there, but it was too loud. The hostess was responsive. The server was attentive and knowledgeable. Unfortunately he did not know until we ordered and had to come back to the table, that they had run out of two of the main dishes, the halibut special and the red snapper (the reason we chose the restaurant). The food that we finally got was excellent. The mussels were superb, the ribs fabulous, succulent and tender. The salmon was special. The choice of wine was on point. The server should have discounted the meal given that we were on our third choices from the menu, but alas, no such luck. Overall, rated a 3, but could have been a

We had a reservation that got us a table opposite to door to the Kitchen next to the bar entrance so we were surrounded by busy bodies in motion, but enjoyed it all nevertheless. Our waitress Sarah was knowledgable and attentive and the food innovative and delicious. The wine list was very interesting, and the Valley of the Moon Rose delicious with my wife;s 'baboutie' and my braised chicken. The brie cheesecake was marvelous -- we broke our rule about never having desert to give it a try and ate every morsel. We intend to try again on a les busy night,
