  • LOVED IT, but menu a tough read

Love everything about this restaurant, so I will only share the one or two things that can be improved: 1. I don't consider myself a neanderthal, and have dined in some of the finest places, but this menu? It's a bit pretentious and I did need to use Google to figure out what some of the ingredients were. 2. My food was not hot enough, it took a very long time to get between the appetizer and entree, and I feel my entree was sitting.

The food was exceptional. This restaurant is like having a 5 star NYC restaurant in Connecticut. Portions were just the right size and temperature. Service was excellent. We weren't rushed. The entire experience far exceeded expectations!!! Hats off to the Chef and entire staff!!

  • Nice addition to local dining scene
    OpenTable Diner Since 2008
    Dined on 5/4/2012
Food was excellent albeit pricey with small portions by NYC standards of comparable high end dining experiences (one always seems to pay more in Fairfield County). Very knowledgeable and professional staff that was well educated and enthusiastic about their menu. A bit of a delay between apps and entrees, otherwise kudos for good service. Very nice minimalist, streamlined ambiance. Experience was marred only by it being extraordinarily noisy dining room when full. If you are a foodie and don't mind the aforementioned price/portion/noise criticisms, then Elm is definitely worth a visit. It adds instant credibility and raises the bar on the burgeoning food scene in Fairfield County.

  • Food was overall very good

Food was overall very good but being familiar with chef Lewis ' cooking The bar is set very high and I was disappointed with the veal. This is a foodie experience so be prepared for smaller portions. There is staff everywhere looking self important yet we finally needed to flag someone down to see a menu.Restaurant was beautiful but they need to turn down the lights a bit. Will be going back to taste more of the chefs creations.

Outstanding food, interesting menu. Very rich, though, so if you're stomach is sensitive, watch out. Also pricey, but worth it for that special occasion.

  • Went with very high expectations

Went with very high expectations yet each dish just missed somehow. Was expecting a "wow" and instead had an "it's all right" moment. That is what happens when you give into hype. If I went without preconceived notions I would have said it was a good meal instead of just OK. Although the ingredients were great, the combinations just did not gel right, one dish needed more seasoning and another needed less. Presentation was very attractive though aren't all we over foams at this point? Considering the competition, I thought portions were a bit on the small side for the price.

  • Chef Brian Lewis has transformed
    OpenTable Diner Since 2006
    Dined on 3/30/2012
Chef Brian Lewis has transformed the former Chinese restaurant into a sleek modern space with decor and ambitious food that would be right at home in Soho or anywhere in NYC. The menu is small with equal emphasis on fish and meat dishes. The menu was about enjoying the chef's creations rather than customizing standard fare to your own tastes. I enjoyed my dinner and the atmosphere very much.

While I rated this restaurant mostly with "very goods", my overall rating is "good" since the food was delicious but portions incredibly small, and scene was fun but very sterile and long table for 6 didn't work well at all.

first the interior---very modern with an open kitchen---it's very New York. The bar is not exactly well stocked. The food was amazing, creative, and extremely well presented. The menu changes daily. So you don't know what will be served. Some people like that. I prefer the menu to be consistent. I also like it when the menu changes seasonally, but not everyday. I asked for some potatoes with my main, and they said , 'we have no potatoes", I said, 'ever?" The waiter said, "well we did have potato soup yesterday", don't go there hungry. The portions are extremely small. an appetizer and a main will cost about $50 per person...price to portion is out of whack--since the portions are slightly larger than what you would get in a tasting menu.

The food was wonderful as was the ambiance. Will certainly go back again and again. I hope that the menu will offer more variety in the future, but there is still more than enough to try until that happens. Happy to have you in New Canaan and we look forward to our next meal.

I'm a foodie and I just kept whispering after each bite....OMG this is sooooooo good! The flavor and texture combinations were inspiring, beautifully executed and simply delicious. The ingredients tasted so fresh as to feel Chef Brian Lewis had a garden, a small ocean and a farm back there in the kitchen with him!

Brian Lewis has brought his bursting flavors and sensitivity to local, sustainable ingredients to New Canaan and has triumphed in the process. From the warm, friendly greeting, through the final moments it was a special experience. Our two appetizers, the "crunchy" tuna and the Ravioli were both so good they warranted many pauses as we shared them, to enjoy each and every bite. The entrees were equally delicious (I had the pork, my wife the beef). The wine list is both approachable and plentiful. Brian and his entire team have raised the bar in what is already a great food destination, congratulatons!
