We thoroughly enjoyed the seafood here and would rate this place among the best seafood restaurants we've tried. Very creative flavor combinations. Prices were average. Restaurant is in downtown Portsmouth, NH, but not in view of the water. The waiter was knowledgeable about the food and steered us in the right direction. The fresh catch I had was very moist and done exactly right. The sauces that I had on the side were delicious and it was hard to choose a favorite. If you want to try more than one sauce, there is a small charge. The dessert menu was small, but adequate. Overall, it was well worth the drive.

  • We ate at Jays on a Monday
    OpenTable Diner Since 2008
    Dined on 6/9/2008
We ate at Jays on a Monday evening when it was not crowded. The food was excellent and nicely presented, service was friendly and attentive; however, our meal appeared at our table about three minutes after we ordered. I realize it doesn't take long to sear tuna or scallops, but given the upscale pricing and trendy atmosphere, it's a little off putting to be served at the pace of a fast food establishment. When we left, which was quite soon after we arrived, I thought that Jay's served fine food but lacked warmth and generosity. For that reason alone, it's unlikely we will be repeat customers.

Our table was in the bar area right by the window in the sun. It was one of the hottest days of the year and therefore we were somewhat uncomfortable because of the heat.

  • Normally I would give Jay's
    OpenTable Diner Since 2007VIP
    Dined on 6/6/2008
Normally I would give Jay's 5 stars, but I went off course by ordering the fresh catch with a new sauce. The haddock Piccata is to die for and I should have stuck with that. Also, one pet peeve is that in the summer they do not offer potato, only rice or cous cous. They must have potatoes because they are in the chowder, so why not accommodate spud lovers like us!! Also, the waitress did not advise how pricey the chardonnay was by the glass. Only one choice and it turned out to be $11 / glass. Sticker shock when we got the bill. I have paid that much before, but ususally there are less expensive options for a mainstream wine like chardonnay. Rule: Stick to entrees you love & skip the extras for a real value

Jumpin Jays is a local favorite for us as the food quality and preparation is tasty and always consistent. The staff is well seasoned and possess great knowledge about their menu, the preparation methods and alternative choices. This is a 5 Star in our book and we compliment the management and staff for a job well done!

  • The oyster list on the website
    stall429
    Dined on 5/30/2008
The oyster list on the website was a far cry from the 4 they had that day. Then, when recieved, they were gritty and had bits of shell in them. Basically, the only thing we enjoyed about the restaurant was the NE Seafood Chowder. The batter for the fried oyster and calamari were both terribly bland. The oysters were not in the Panko, as per their menu, but in basic flour coating. In fact, everything was bland. Except for the Tuna/Avocado app., which was in mustard, was just disgusting. We will not return or recommend.

The sauce sampler that came with my arctic char was inspired - I loved almost all of the choices. My dining companions also enjoyed their selections. A fire broke out in the back of the building as we were ordering dessert and the restaurant had to be evacuated. The staff handled this in the same friendly and professional way they did everything else. The restaurant closed for the night and our meal was comped. We'll be back.

I can put up with the restaurant being crowded and loud, however,I cannot acccept being ignored and this will be the downfall of this wonderfull fish restaurant if this is not corrected immediately!

  • I had a mostly good experience
    OpenTable Diner Since 2013
    Dined on 4/29/2008
I had a mostly good experience at Jumpin Jays. The night I was there, it was a special Oyster night with 3 selections of oysters. I had a doz Chatham Oysters for $12 and they were exceptional. The bartenders were very good and knowledgeable about the menu. I had a very good Hendricks Martini and I had the fisherman's stew for an entree. The stew was a nicely done hearty bouillabaisse, with littlenecks, Scallops, Shrimp, Mussels, and from what I could tell salmon and swordfish chunks. Spicy and with a hint of saffron. The place filled up quickly with what seemed like a crowd of (mostly)regulars. It had a nice feel to it. The only real negative was that my half finished stew was tossed without asking if I wanted to take the remainder to go.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2007
    Dined on 4/26/2008
The best fish selection and quality when prepared that we've ever encountered. Side dishes were Ok, but we were there for the fish, not the sides. Ambience was downgraded due to the two different places we were seated. Both had air vents with cool air blowing from them that were visibly moving the leaves of plants near our table. Needless to stay, it was annoying and chilly. Service was friendly and quick.

We love and go often to Jumpin Jays. Fish is great and always fresh. Great martinis and wine list! Unfortunately, It is very dark in the restaurant. Some like that. Being over 50, I cant see the menu when it is so dark even with my reading glasses on!! I make OPen Table Reservations quite often. I was happy to make my reservations thru you BUT, unfortunately, did not get any points- Why not??I was disappointed! Have been going there for a few years and have sent many friends there and they alll loved it! Again, Overall we like JAYS and it is always hopping especially in the summer ( I even go there in the winter months). Happily Stuffed! Cathy Buco Also,Service was great!

The service was exceptional, first off it was the perfect amount of service and not too overly friendly of a waiter, I don't go out to eat to make a new friend but being friendly and knowledgeable is a waiters job. Dishes were cleared out and all courses offered. The food was very good and done right, except sauce was asked for on the side but served on the fish but no big deal and I didn't want to wait for another plate. I will be back for another meal there. The reservations were perfect.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2008
    Dined on 4/11/2008
This was my second time at Jays and as before the food and oysters were excellent. I have made reservations on both occasions and on both occasions I have been seated at the same table. This table is at the bar. It is in a high traffic area and the wait staff go by every two minutes practically brushing up against you. It is also right underneath the HVAC unit which the A/C was on this night. Ok if your working in the kitchen or dining at the other end of the restaurant, but not when your date is right underneath it. I was hoping by making reservations I would have been seated at a better table at least one out of the two reservations. Especially after spending $150 twice. Customers coming in with out reservations were sat at better tables.

The food was very good and the prices were as we expected. The atmosphere was somewhat noisy but enjoyable nonetheless. They were wonderful. We had orginally booked for two; then 3 other people joined us - they found room. Then they added 2 more people joined us and she did everything to get us a table together. She called me back when they figured it out and them called me to tell me my table was ready. What service. Our waitress was also wonderful and was everyone we interacted with at the resturant and the food was very very good. Everyone talked about it the next day. The only reason I did not rate it as Outstanding a rare find was because my and my husband's meal was not in that catagory- he had the seafood stew and I had the boulilbase (spelled wrong I know) the broth was wonderful but the seafood was overcooked.
