  • We have been to Tanglewood

    Dined on 5/17/2008
We have been to Tanglewood a few times, and have found both the food and service to be inconsistent. The menu this time had several heavy "winter" dishes for a hot summer night. One person in our party ordered the meat loaf. It was dry. I had the pork loin. It was overcooked and a bit dry, although the waiter indicated that it usually is served "pink" and was that okay with me (I indicated that it was). The portions were very small. Two in our party had appletinis which came out sickeningly sweet, and put us in mind of Jolly Ranchers green apple candy melted into a glass. The waiter "disappeared" several times and forgot to ask us about dessert. The company was good, and sitting outside was nice although loud with street traffic.

We visited Tanglewood after a very hot day. We were given the choice of inside or outdoor dining. We chose outside to enjoy the cool night. The service was warm and friendly. My martini was good... cold, with tell-tail floating ice crystals. The asparagus soup I have to say was brutal. Ravioli's with goat cheese and pesto were pretty good... albite a bit on the tough side. My wife enjoyed here salmon dish very much. Cherry desert was excellent. My usual double espresso was not too bad. I have rediculously his espresso standards. I may return to Tanglewood some day but would not recommend to friends... way too many really great restaurants in the SF Bay Area.

The appetizers were really good - ahi tuna and lobster roll are a must. My ribeye was okay; good portion size but not as tender as I was expecting it to be. However, the lemon truffle fries were excellent; my wife loved them too.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2004VIP
    Dined on 5/13/2008
I am a VERY avid rib eye steak fan in search of the best steak in terms of preparedness, plating, and promptness. Last Tuesday night, I ordered a steak "blue" (extra extra rare as most restaurants would know). No fault to our server, but he was unaware of the term "blue" so I had to explain I wanted it very, very rare. Not BLACK and blue mind you, just blue. Much to my disappointment, my steak came out medium rare, and not even rare. I didn't want to send it back because then I would have had to wait for a new steak and at that point, I didn't want to embarrass myself or my company (new client) so I just ate it. Please next time I order it "blue", know that I will NEVER send it back for being TOO rare. Thank you.

overall decent restaurant. The staff tend to chat a lot and make jokes and goof off. for this type of restaurant, I don't enjoy that type of atmosphere as it's not very professional. Don't feel they take their customers seriously when they leave your table and then start chit-chatting with a fellow employee. Saw it happen a lot. Not our waiter, per se. But in general, for a busy mother's day brunch - there were a lot of staff members just standing around looking like they had nothing much to do!

    OpenTable Diner Since 2003
    Dined on 5/11/2008
We had a horrible experience at Tanglewood and will not return. Although we had a reservation, they were clearly overbooked and could not seat us when we arrived. They pushed us to seat outside in the cold saying that we would be protected by glass and would have heat lamps. After four requests to turn on the heat lamps, they still neglected to turn them on. We had to practically beg for water or refills. There was no special treatment to the mothers at all which is tacky in my opinion. Finally, the food was not tasty. My mother's steak and egg entree had a nice steak topped with practically a hard boiled egg (should have been over easy). My $30 steak entree was fatty and tough. I am happy Cocolat was near for dessert to better things.

Menu is unfocused and too much meat and potatoes for most SV lunch places. Fries with the crabcake sandwich were overkill. Salmon was good. Look at Parcel 104 as an example of how to pull it off. Have no plans to return to Tanglewood. It was disappointing.

Possibly the worst service I have ever had in a similarly priced place. We are regular 25% tippers and left NOTHING. That waitress could not have moved slower. At a slow time, we waited 20 minutes for 3 drinks to come from the bar while we watched our waitress and 2 others hang out and chat. Unbelievable. As a capper, she put another table's drinks on our bill, which I fortunately caught. A real shame.

Great ambience, service, decor, wine list, and bar. The food was extremely average/below average in flavor. Very bland fish, overly greasy panko breading, served too hot to eat, bland mashed potatoes, vibrant green sauce had no flavor, no acid, bland coconut donuts, heavy. Spinach over blanched, underseasoned. Ribeye not tender. Beet salad.. great greens, good dressing, but hidden beets...Dined on a Saturday evening at 7, food should have been prime.

I have given Tanglewood a Poor rating due to the fact that I made reservations one day in advance and upon arriving to the restaurant, the restaurant was "closed for a private party." I was not given notice of the restaurant closure, therefore was stuck at the last minute to find another restaurant. The restaurant and Opentable should have blocked out that time spot if they knew of the private party.

The blackened prawns were so spicy they destroyed my fine French Champagne. I at half of one. We shared a beat salad which was mediocre [beats should have been shaved, not in big chucks]. Our waitress brought out two extra plates since we were sharing the salda. The plates were warm/hot! I sent them back; got medium warm plates the 2nd time. [Don't find restaurants chill their plates & even the forks???] The Kobe beef was poor; not much beef flavor. We ordered it medium rare and it came definitely rare. We should have sent it back. We ordered the fried pastry dessert; it was really bad. Sugar, air, and flour. I sent it back and refuse to pay for it. It was a disgrace. I have been disappointed in Left Banks before; this was no different.

My steak and my guests' steaks seemed somewhat undercooked. It tasted okay (not great) but I hurled later that night. When I called the next day, the manager claimed the source was something other than what was served at his restaurant since, according to him, it takes 24-48 hours for food poisoning to set in. This is complete BS since the few times this has happened to me, in my lifetime, I knew within 1-2 hours of eating. To make matters worse, the leftovers were fed to two dogs who also hurled and the manager had nothing to say to try and explain that away. When all was said and done, no real adjustment or make-good was offered on a future visit. Quite short sighted since I often entertain business partners at Santana Row

The food was mostly all delicious, although I felt that the prices were a bit inflated. The meatloaf was delicious, and the lobster roll received rave reviews. The most expensive entree on the menu - the cowboy steak - was a disappointment in its lack of creativity and flavor, although the bed of fries it was sitting on was a huge hit. I was disconcerted to see the lobster roll missing from the entree list on the menu although it was listed online - only to find it under "starters." The sleek wood interior was impressive. Service was somewhat lacking. Our server seemed lackadaisical and was uneven in her help; our busboy was nicer than she was.
