A word from Altura
Altura applies the focus of ingredient-driven Italian cooking to the natural bounty of the Pacific Northwest. Our chefs work tirelessly each day to highlight the most exciting seasonal products.

Chef Nathan Lockwood's tasting menu is at the heart of the Altura approach to dining. With a focus on wild foraged products, pristine Puget Sound seafood and locally raised heirloom meats and vegetables, our tasting menu exemplifies who we are. Expect to spend two to three hours enjoying ten to fifteen courses of our most inspired dishes.

For a less structured approach, diners are welcome to design their own experience by choosing three or more courses from our traditional menu. Our Sommelier, Ryan Schroeder, is always on hand to design a unique flight of paired wines or help you find the perfect bottle to highlight your experience.

We invite you to join us on Capitol Hill to celebrate seasonal cuisine, exceptional wine and gracious service.

It was my first time to try this restaurant. Though the weather was terrible on that day, everything aspect inside the restaurant was wonderful. Especially the menu composition, execution, presentation, quality of service were impeccable. I will definitely go back again. It's not a budget restaurant, but hey, every good things have their price for a reason, right? Highly recommended for all the serious foodies.

This is a wonderful setting and menu but appropriate appreciation requires time. There are lots of yummy flavors that need time to enjoy. One draw back is that Guy June the wine specialist is no longer there so we get a generic memorized introduction to the paired wines instead of a knowledgeable opinion. That is too bad, still the menu is delicious.

Altura presents an intensity of local flavor, preparation and a fun menu that really opens up the uniqueness of the individual components to each dish. We both chose the 5-course meal with paired wines. I have to say from the salumi and fois gras appetizers to the final amuse-bouche, our eyes and palates were very happy. The staff were very approachable and friendly. While some may balk at the cost of a meal at Altura, we found it to be an awesome adventure and are already planning when we can introduces some friends to the restaurant.

The service is excellent! Watching the chefs doing their work is impeccable. They really put a lot of effort and seriousness into making each dish. We tried the five course menu and love all of it. Next time we'll do the tasting menu as some other customers were and their dishes look amazing. Of course you need to be adventurous in such case.

We prefer restaurants which create the tastiest meal, made with quality ingredients, and served graciously, efficiently and unobtrusively. Then there are places such as Altura, looking to show the chef's prowess, give diners a thrill and the servers a stage, including a certain amount of silliness, such as complimentary rhubarb juice with our cocktails and servers hovering over every bite of the other amuses bouches we didn't order. Assured the chef would cook my pork perfectly, even though I said not rare, please, it came perfectly crusted on the outside, bloody on the inside--cold asparagus and fava beans on the side. My wife liked her pasta better, but her cannoli fillling was the consistency and flavor of something from the supermarket.

Altura is a classic Seattle hot spot. Service is friendly, welcoming, and professional. The scene of diners and chefs is diverse and engaging. The menu is fashion-forward; I found only a few dishes I might want. However, my entree (risi e bisi) and dessert (bourbon caramel semifreddo) were to die for: fresh, well-conceived, wonderful flavors. My appetizer (asparagus nettle soup) was less successful -- kind of a clashing hodgepodge of tastes, none very appealing. Two complimentary amuses, generously offered at the start, were ... forgettable. Prices are high; I paid $95 (with tip) for the above plus a gin & tonic. I wish these good folks well, but at this point there is better value for one's money elsewhere.

Made a reservation for 4 diners at the dining counter. Counter seating for more than 3 can make conversation difficult. I wanted to give my dining companions a chance to see a kitchen in action and the view did not disappoint. Food: Had the tasting menu with wine pairings. The food was executed to a high level and was very consistent. The meal had no real low points with several high points. Best dishes for me were the tartare, iberico pork, and seafood pasta. Wine pairings were well matched, my only gripe was wanting more pours for the cost of the pairing. Food value was great though. Service Generally friendly, one moment of waiter smugness unfortunately

While on the high end side, it was worth every penny for the casually sophisticated experience. The Rhubarb taster with the tiny custard, expertly prepared. When the waiter said there was orange in the topping and I am highly allergic, he removed it. Most restaurants, that would have been the end of it, but our waiter came back within minutes with one with no orange. We were almost late for The Lion King at the Paramount and missed one course, which they refunded. Be prepared for an evening of delicious food in a casually well thought out environment. Can't wait to return and this time include the wine pairing with dinner.

We went to this restaurant because it was a James Beard nominee. My dining companion and I had the tasting menu - the food was great, but I won't order it again. It was too much food and while the food was great, I can't remember what I had. I think if I'd had the 3-course menu I would be able to describe it better.

Wow - what a great restaurant. We ordered the chef's tasting menu (pricey) but enjoyable. The server was pleasant and knowledgeable about the food and wine. There were a number of dishes, but they were spaced out nicely. I was expecting more traditional Italian dishes but there was only one pasta dish and it was one of my favorites as was a small one bite mussel that was served smoking under a glass. Some of the dishes were just small bites and others were small plates. Either way it was all tasty. We would definitely return.

We dined with a friend from NYC and were not disappointed. We had dined here always choosing the 3 course option, but this time chose the tasting menu. There were 12 different courses, though it is described on the menu to have the equivalent of 4 courses. The Chopped Beet Carpaccio was especially memorable with farm egg, pickled turnip, bone marrow and parmesan. Another highlight was the grilled octopus and abalone with wild watercress, preserved lemon and spring onion. The True Wagyu New York Steak came prior to the three small but intensely good dessert portions. None of us had a feeling that is was too much food because the portions were all small but substantial enough to enjoy the amazing flavors of each dish.

This is a very small restaurant with very big ideas! Everything our party ordered (we shared) was exquisitely prepared by the chef/owner working behind the kitchen bar not 10' away. Every dish was a flavor explosion, thoughtfully prepared and presented. The wait staff were attentive without being over present. We will definitely return and we are already referring visiting out-of-towners looking for great food to Altura. It is one of the best in Seattle! (But avoid the single banquet seat in the rear, it's rather uncomfortable.)

We have been frequenting Altura from the first month of opening and have been wowed by the experience that Chef Nathan provides to his guests. That is why my husband and I selected Altura to celebrate our 40th anniversary. We treated ourselves to the tasting menu and wine pairing and can report that it surpassed any meal that we have had the privilege to taste including our many outings to The Herb Farm. Chef Nathan, Chef Extraordinaire. I do not know how he can top this, but I am certain that he will.

You can have it good or fast, which one do you want? Honestly this is amazing food, but honestly they need to improve the service we were patient but had one course in the first 2 hours. Finished the bottle of wine I had ordered for dinner. Maybe someone dropped the ball. The Nettle soup was complex, amazing, and who knew you could make the most memorable thing I have put in my mouth for 3 nights of dining in Seattle out of Nettles? Had the 5 course meal and it did not disappoint. The balsamic on the dessert could have been good but honestly the flavors didn't work all that great.

Our experience at Altura was phenomenal--from the very attentive service to the magnificently-presented cuisine. We commented several times the following day that we hadn't had a dining experience like that in a long time. We had the special ribeye steak for two. My wife and I went there for my b-day. The food, presentation and service was very good. I'm not the type that likes a lot of detailed explanation of where every wine was from and whether or not it has a sweet yet nutty oak flavor and such, but the attention to detail is there if you appreciate that kind of stuff. Almost as much as I like the food I liked watching the cooks prepare the meals on the dining counter. You can see the level of detail that goes into the preparation partly because you are 2' away staring at them and partly because the high-quality is the norm not the exception. Overall great food with a focus on presentation and flavor and not on quantity. Prices are high, but for the right occasion worth it.

I’ve reviewed Altura in the past, commenting that it’s outstanding in every way and one of the top restaurants in the world (yes, seriously). In this review, I’d like to add that I was quite impressed to see how well they handled a group of 12-14, most of whom were enjoying the tasting menu (which I highly recommend). Hosting a dinner? This is the place! For couples, the counter is theater. You can watch the entire Altura team, led by chef Nathan Lockwood, as they work their gastronomical magic. While unique, the food is delightful and approachable, not pretentious. Romantic? Absolutely! Not as a dark corner, candlelit, cliché, but as an opportunity to connect with another’s soul across a feast for the senses.

We went to celebrate both mine and my husband's birthdays and it was our first time. We were initially seated at a table but after a few minutes we asked to move to the bar. The food is outstanding. We took 5 courses each and every dish was extraordinary. The portions are not huge but when we got to the deserts we were stuffed. We also shared a wine parring which was nice of them to accommodate but watch out- even for 2 people that was A LOT of wine- we appreciated getting a great return on what we paid for. Place is not noisy so we were able to have a nice conversation. The bar is the highlight- seeing how they make the dishes was amazing and the chefs were so nice-made our evening even more special. Highly recommended. We will be back.

This was my third trip to Altura and I continued to be delighted and impressed. Each course was excellent, perfectly cooked and really thoughtfully built on the plate to give the highest visual and flavor impact. Cool attention to detail and additional touches. The staff is friendly, knowledgable and professional-- probably one of the best trained in Seattle. The wine list is thoughtfully chosen and has a great collection of interesting and delicious selections to pair with chef's style and the flavor profiles he seems to go for.
