  • Rabbit entree was exceptional!

Found a rabbit entree on New Years Eve menu - an item rarely found in restaurants. Both of us have enjoyed rabbit in the past so gave it a try. This was the best ever! Boned chunks were wonderfully seasoned and prepared in a bacon wrapped roll about 5 inches in diameter and served as 3/4 inch slices. Anyone who was thinking about ordering it, but hesitated because it seemed a bit too different missed a real treat!

This is our favorite restaurant in Gainesville. The staff is always friendly and the food is always terrific. It is a bit upscale and the wine list is full of producers we are unfamiliar with which make meals here an enjoyable adventure. Highly recommend.

My mom and I were traveling from Naples, FL to Atlanta, GA and stopped for the night in Gainesville. On Open Table, I found Mildreds Big City Food - it was just a few miles from our hotel and the description sounded interesting. We had an early dinner reservation so the restaurant was mostly empty when we arrived. Over the next hour, it filled with what were obviously locals who frequented the restaurant, judging from interactions with the wait staff. We started with specialty cocktails, housemade bread and then proceeded to salads and entrees. I had the local chicken, roasted and my mom had the salmon, both very good. The description of the restaurant mentioned housemade cakes and cheesecake so we left room to enjoy. Delicious!

I had the New York Strip steak with garlic mash and broccolini. My Wife had the Red Grouper with pearl onion risotto and kale. My steak was a true New York strip, with inside fat rim still intact. It is obvious Mildred's do their own butchery and have excellent knowledge of the craft. I ordered my steak medium-rare and it was perfectly prepared. The garlic mash was well seasoned with no one flavor overpowering the potato's natural starchiness. The broccolini was blanched and chilled with almost no seasoning - which is how it should be - and was served barely warmed by the heat of the mash and steak. My wife's piece of grouper was also perfectly cut and prepared, the risotto was well seasoned and creamy, but not runny. Easy 5-stars!

We've often enjoyed lunch at Mildred's, and decided to try their dinner, as the restaurant is located so close to the Philipps center for a pre-show dinner. Their dinner menu is fabulous and the food delicious. I was very happy to have selected the braised pork appetizer and the melt in your mouth scallops. The blend of flavors in each dish was surprising and delightful. We'll come back for dinner again!

You can always count on Mildred's to deliver great dishes every day, every time. Some places won't allow you to interchange the accompaniments to the main entree, but they will always do that, which is a real plus. You never have to look very far to find a waiter which are very knowledgable about items on menu. J&J GNV,FL.

Hadn't dined at Mildred's for sometime but remembered it to be good food.. To say the least the experience on this visit wasn't one that would warrant a return visit. Food was average at best and the service was very slow. One entree was warm and not hot when the chef finally sent it to the table. Wine list is decent. Too bad that Mildred's is considered to be some of the best dining that Gainesville has to offer. If you travel and enjoy fine food, you are likely to have a very disappointing experience.

Mildred's is located in an unimpressive back corner of a strip mall. The decor inside is plain. The service and food, however, were outstanding! The staff was attentive, friendly and knowledgable. The food selection was impressive for a little restaurant, with its menu changing daily based on ingredients that are available locally, in season etc. There was a mix of classics such as crab cakes, Cornish hen and New York Strip... but prepared with a fine touch. Other items were unique and delishious, such as the snails with fresh, homemade linguini. The selection of fish was broad, such as cobia, pompano, Idaho brook trout and wild salmon. The salads were well received, particularly the white bean salad with smoked sausage.

This was our fifth time going to Mildred's Big City Food. The food is consistently delicious, it's actual great food in Gainesville. The waitress took about 15 minutes to come take our drink orders but she apologized and it all went smoothly after that. The food is just so good and tastes so light and flavorful. This might be the best restaurant in town, worth every penny.

Restaurant is hidden in a small strip mall. It is very good. We all enjoyed the appetizers esp. the squash! The lamb was so tender it fell off the bone. It was outstanding. We also had salmon, Cornish hen and steak and it also was very good. the only thing we didn't care for was the salads the salad dressing had a bitter taste. But everything else was great including the strawberry short cake and the tagalong cheesecake. If u don't want a rich dessert stick to the shortcake. It is pricey, so I would go there for a special occasion.

I was pretty excited about eating here, but left slightly disappointed. My wife ordered pompano, it consisted of two small filets, one of which smaller and overcooked/dry to the point of turning brown. My son and I ordered NY Strip, medium. The steak was not very well trimmed, and was pretty tough. I would suggest they ask their purveyor for a better marbled steak, or that they investigate the wonders of marination. Service was meh.

Ww always enjoy the food at Mildred's. We go early before it gets full and it never fails we have to sit right next to someone else. This visit when we arrived there were maybe 6 other people dining. We were sat at a table a couple over from everyone else, plenty of room. (it is one big room with tables practically on top of each other) Then 5 minutes into our drinks a party of 4 (2 rather large men) were sat at the table right next to us. They could have eaten off of our table. It ended up being fine, but we could hear their entire conversation and several requests for the wait staff to bring the food because they were in a hurry. Good food and service, but if you're looking for privacy-not here.
