  • Shiki up your lunch break

A friend recommended Shiki so my coworkers and I went for lunch. Fun looking restaurant and for the time of day, it was quiet to have a good conversation. The hostess was friendly, but the server lacked personality. The menu had a great variety of sushi/sashimi items, donburi, udon and teriyaki for lighter options. Our lunch came quick with a fresh salad and ginger and the sushi was good. My coworker ordered chicken curry udon which was served on a platter which looked appetizing, but was in need of more spice. The overall experience was nice, quick for lunch and reasonable. We'd go again.

Went to celebrate a birthday and our family LOVES sushi, especially the fancy type rolls. We ordered so many they wouldn't all fit on our table. Favorites were the Jalapeno Poppers that were special that day, the Dragon Roll, Honey Crunch Roll & Spider Rolls. All were fresh, crisp, and absolutely delicious! Ordered a sake bomb for the b-day girl, we had a glass of house chardonnay that was served nice and cold. Other visits included the Tempura plate but this time we went just for the sushi. A great place to take your friends and family. Service was attentive, friendly and the food came quickly.

Staff was very friendly & knowledgeable. We sat at the sushi bar in front of Sato & he was great! He was funny & chatted w/us from time to time. The sushi was spectacular, especially their specials! Everything we ate was fresh and/or full of flavor! Will definitely be back!

We eat here fairly often, since it is one of the better options for Japanese food nearby. The sushi is usually good and there is a nice variety of appetizers and cooked dishes. The service, while friendly, can be erratic. At our most recent dinner, I ordered a cooked dish from the kitchen and the rest of my family ordered from the sushi bar. They were all done eating their food before mine came. This should not happen, and made for an awkward dinner. We will continue to eat here because we like Japanese food, but I wish the service would improve.

Shiki while part of a chain, has some distinct takes on sushi - their carpaccio, their Goma, their seared scallops - all delicious and surprisingly well executed at dinner time (whereas some lunch shifts seem to under perform on these same items). If they can raise their quality and consistency their score and patronage will go up.

This was the first time our group had been there for lunch. Everything we had was delicious, however, service was a little on the slow side. We wanted to order more rolls but we also wanted dessert before we left so we opted to have dessert since we know ordering more rolls would take too long.

I've been to three of the Shiki Restaurants and Shiki Bistro (by far!) is the BEST!! My parents are THE most finicky eaters as my mother was quite the chef. They LOVED it so much that they asked me to take them two weeks in a row!

Shiki has all the potential for greatness but is inconsistent. The Goma Tataki is stunning when done right; but today it was drenched in a thick tasteless sauce. The grilled scallops were great but the duck breast was tasteless and overlooked. Every hut had a miss. We will keep trying as we've been there before and it was excellent. The time it was definitely a C grade at best.

Shiki is reasonable in price and the sushi is ok. It's the best option in the area for sushi. Good place to go if you have a sushi craving and don't want to drive. I made a reservation on Opentable but when we came there, they didn't have me down. But we were able to get a table at that time so it wasn't an issue.

If you want a fun, energetic feel this is a great place to go. I did see some kids there but to me this place has more of an adult vibe with late night swank and fun bar scene. Food was great and fresh. Service was spot on and full of helpful suggestions.

I went to dinner for V-day with my doll. I made a reservation and I specified my preference for tables but when I got there, a booth was available and I was invited to sit there. I asked if a table was available and the waiter gladly helped to sit us at a table ... I scanned through the menu and I chose Tappan seafood. Although the plate should be spelled as "Teppan", the dish was amazing and really tasty! I then ordered Tartufo chocolate, a dessert which was described as a truffle/cocoa ball filled with zabaglione. It was not quite accurate in the description since zabaglione is not normally frozen and doesn't taste like that but the dessert was good nonetheless. The place does not have the Japanese ambiance but it's nice.

We went to Shiki Bistro for my daughter's birthday, bringing her two young children. The kids' orders were brought out immediately by our lovely server. Their Shirley Temples were in covered cups, so no spill worries. Our food also arrived quickly and was very good. The sake tasting was fun - a must-try if you visit. While we were looking at the dessert menu, they brought a special birthday dessert for my daughter, on the house. It was large enough to share with the whole table. All-in-all a very nice experience. By far our favorite Japanese restaurant in San Carlos.
