Everything was great about our meal at the Oakwood. The owner/manager was charming and came to check on us often. The food was really tasty and the wine list was short, but good! The only thing that let the meal down was our miserable server. She seemed to forget she was in the "customer service" industy and really made us feel like we were bothering her if we dared ask for a glass of water. A real shame. Good job we were with a group and could just laugh about it or it might have ruined an otherwise exceptional meal.

My girlfriends and I went out to celebrate my birthday - the menu was perfect with a variety of things to share and to accommodate gluten-free, kosher, and vegetarian palates. Also, the service was fantastic and devoted to making sure we were satisfied, and genuinely interested in the one thing that didn't work (a cheesecake that was quickly replaced by a much better version - just an off item) and making a correction. All in all, a fabulous evening.

Nice room, cozy but a little cold. Very casual but well informed service. The menu reads like a large portioned comfort food menu. poriotns are anything but. $15 burger is just the burger, although one of the best my companion had ever had. Ribeye was tasty but small. Was the kind of place that we should have ordered 3 or 4 courses but there was no clue of that by reading the menu, the type of service we got or the look. Sum didn't match the very good parts for us.

I try to get to the Oakwood for their awesome burger and killer poutine but, this time, my friends and I ordered the tasting menu. Presentation was impeccable, the food was diverse and just fabulous. We were all blown away. Only complaint was there might have been too much food which, of course, is no complaint at all. I lost count of the number of courses. Five? Six? Eleven? The shock was the bill wasn't a hundred bucks more than it was. A great evening out. My new favorite place. Highly recommended.

We love the atmosphere of this place - like your most comfortable living room. We definitely will return to the Oakwood, probably even next week... All dishes were amazing and we love sharing a whole bunch of appetizers and main courses amongst our party. Needless to say, overall service was impeccable as always, from the hostess to the owner to our server: well-timed and friendly, interestingly solid selection of very affordable wines.

Kitsilano hot spot. Fantastic well thought out menu (everything baked and made in house), ambiance, and attentive service. Good for groups but also has an element of romance with the candle lit tables and burning fire place. Owner Mike is an incredibly hard working guy and it reflects in his restaurant, a definite must try! Do make a reso though, it's very popular. I can't wait to sit on the patio in the summer, people watch and enjoy a fabulous tequila ceasar - yum!

The first time we went there the food was surprisingly good - varied, tasty - new. (not "the usual")... noise level a bit high for any conversation. The second time we made a reservation - got there - and left - as the noise level was intolerable. Why is noise level equated with "a good time"? The advice that we should come earlier when it's quieter - nice - but based on the first experience, inaccurate. We will give this place one more try as it is a local gem - but the competition down the street is strong - the food as good, and the place quieter....

My husband and I attended this resturant on a Saturday night during the Dine out event. The place was busy which may have impacted our service a little, but never had to wait too long. We took advantage of the dine out menu and were not disappointed, the portions were good sized and the wine paired with the dinner was very nice. We will be back.

The thing that really stood out was that the manager came to our table and introduced himself. He wanted to hear how our food for the evening went. I think that is a really sincere touch when the manager of the restaurant wants to know their clients. Without a doubt, I would love to go back to Oakwood. It is definitely the 'neighbourhood gem' of 4th avenue!

Burger is amazing! Great mixed sesame bun, tasty mayo and nice beef burger. Friend's steak was tender and cooked to perfection complimented by mash potatoes. Lamb stew was had a nice mix of fresh ingredients - could have been more flavourful according to friend. Tuna and risotto was a solid wish as well. Beet carrot cake was good but did not care for the amount of blue cheese that was included. Beet sauce could have been a touch thicker. Overall taste was good. Comfy ambience. Would return again to try out the brunch menu.....or another yummy burger.

It was Dine Out and the feature menu lacked balance - everything was covered in cream or cheese or sauce. The lamb stew was salty and chewy. The dessert was not good- beet and carrot cake with blue cheese cream. I'm glad they tried for a twist, but the flavours did not mix well - Beet was too one note, blue cheese was overpowering and the presentation was not appetizing. I was also surprised that our server had not tasted the specials so could not recommend any of the menu items. Beautiful restaurant; I was hoping the food would match.

Everyone at the Oakwood was amazing. Despite it being very busy and having a reservation, the host kept us informed that a previous table had stayed way past their reservation. They sat us at the bar and even offered a complementary appetizer while we waited. They made sure to continuosly check up on us to keep us informed and ensured we were okay. Once we were seated they were very accommodating and made our date a very enjoyable experience. The food is fantastic, well presented and memorable. Delightful from start to finish.

The food is stodgy, salty, greasy, and very tasty. Very comforting and filling. It was a shame that our waitress took away our fries before we were done without checking first; otherwise, service was fine. It's cold if they seat you near the door in the winter though; you get a massive draft every time someone goes in or out.

The food was fairly good, but also fairly pricey for what you get. It's what my boyfriend calls a "nightclub restaurant" - as soon as we got out of the car, we could hear the music blasting from the sidewalk. We had to yell to hear each other, and to even communicate with the server. Definitely not a great spot for just 2 people. On the bright side, the servers were attentive and helpful.

We've been to The Oakwood twice, once for dinner and once for brunch with a larger group. Both times, the service has been fantastic and the food outstanding! The staff really seem to care and the owner visited our table twice on each occasion to ensure everything was OK for us. We had a great brunch - the pesto hash browns are unbelievable and next time I'll definitely be trying the French toast. If you're in the mood for something more substantial, the burger looked fantastic too. For dinner we sat right by the fire on a cold Sunday night. I had deliciously authentic French Onion Soup, and my partner had amazing poutine with brisket which The Oakwood smoke themselves. All in all, two great visits - we'll definitely be back!

I had been to the Oakwood twice before, and had high hopes someone would finally be successful in this location. Unfortunately, this will be my last visit. First, when we arrived the music was not only really loud ( could not even have a conversation without yelling) it was some awful "world" music. When we asked if the music could be lowered, we were told the owner has it set to create a "certain atmosphere". We had our appetizers, which were good, but a little heavy handed with the seasoning (too much salt). We then decided to take our burgers to go, and when we got home found them raw and without any seasoning . These were $15 burgers, ala carte! If you want a good burger, go to Darby's, it's cheaper and better!

Good but growing pains. The brunch dishes were well thought out but many were poorly executed. Overcooked potato pancakes, overcooked and dry sausage, cold French toast. It seemed as though the cook was still learning a menu that was beyond him. All that said I will probably try it again. If they could get the food out fresh and hot the Oakwood could rock.

Thankfully made a reservation on a saturday night. Service was attentive but not over the top. Small menu offered a good variety of food. French onion soup fills you up, so no need for another course! Beet salad delicious. Mussels were okay but sauce too much like a bowl of tomato sauce. Scallops and pulled pork was delicious. Too full for dessert, will go back. Music got cranked at about 8 PM which made talking a bit of a chore.

This was a birthday treat for me and I chose the restaurant for its local fare and Oceanwise listing. I was thrilled. We ate early and the restaurant was quiet - we sat next to the fireplace and enjoyed the ambience. The service was friendly, prompt and caring. The food was great - crackling was shared followed by the Sable fish which was cooked to perfection and the strip loin steak on miniature square fried potatoes. Dessert - yes it was a birthday was carrot cake and appledumpling - the serving sizes are large and we should have shared that course. Red Truck lager was on special and was really good! A very enjoyable evening.
