As 4 mature diners we felt a bit out of place with the younger crowd 25+ years younger and the attending noisier music. A very good place for younger people. Good food.

The thing that really stood out was that the manager came to our table and introduced himself. He wanted to hear how our food for the evening went. I think that is a really sincere touch when the manager of the restaurant wants to know their clients. Without a doubt, I would love to go back to Oakwood. It is definitely the 'neighbourhood gem' of 4th avenue!

Burger is amazing! Great mixed sesame bun, tasty mayo and nice beef burger. Friend's steak was tender and cooked to perfection complimented by mash potatoes. Lamb stew was had a nice mix of fresh ingredients - could have been more flavourful according to friend. Tuna and risotto was a solid wish as well. Beet carrot cake was good but did not care for the amount of blue cheese that was included. Beet sauce could have been a touch thicker. Overall taste was good. Comfy ambience. Would return again to try out the brunch menu.....or another yummy burger.

It was Dine Out and the feature menu lacked balance - everything was covered in cream or cheese or sauce. The lamb stew was salty and chewy. The dessert was not good- beet and carrot cake with blue cheese cream. I'm glad they tried for a twist, but the flavours did not mix well - Beet was too one note, blue cheese was overpowering and the presentation was not appetizing. I was also surprised that our server had not tasted the specials so could not recommend any of the menu items. Beautiful restaurant; I was hoping the food would match.

Everyone at the Oakwood was amazing. Despite it being very busy and having a reservation, the host kept us informed that a previous table had stayed way past their reservation. They sat us at the bar and even offered a complementary appetizer while we waited. They made sure to continuosly check up on us to keep us informed and ensured we were okay. Once we were seated they were very accommodating and made our date a very enjoyable experience. The food is fantastic, well presented and memorable. Delightful from start to finish.

The food is stodgy, salty, greasy, and very tasty. Very comforting and filling. It was a shame that our waitress took away our fries before we were done without checking first; otherwise, service was fine. It's cold if they seat you near the door in the winter though; you get a massive draft every time someone goes in or out.

The food was fairly good, but also fairly pricey for what you get. It's what my boyfriend calls a "nightclub restaurant" - as soon as we got out of the car, we could hear the music blasting from the sidewalk. We had to yell to hear each other, and to even communicate with the server. Definitely not a great spot for just 2 people. On the bright side, the servers were attentive and helpful.

Our first time at The Oakwood. We were a group of 8 and were well looked after. Loved the setting and the pleasant staff. Food was tasty. Server had suggested "tapas style" as an option which we will take her up on next time - all the better to sample the great options. Caesars were divine!

We've been to The Oakwood twice, once for dinner and once for brunch with a larger group. Both times, the service has been fantastic and the food outstanding! The staff really seem to care and the owner visited our table twice on each occasion to ensure everything was OK for us. We had a great brunch - the pesto hash browns are unbelievable and next time I'll definitely be trying the French toast. If you're in the mood for something more substantial, the burger looked fantastic too. For dinner we sat right by the fire on a cold Sunday night. I had deliciously authentic French Onion Soup, and my partner had amazing poutine with brisket which The Oakwood smoke themselves. All in all, two great visits - we'll definitely be back!

I had been to the Oakwood twice before, and had high hopes someone would finally be successful in this location. Unfortunately, this will be my last visit. First, when we arrived the music was not only really loud ( could not even have a conversation without yelling) it was some awful "world" music. When we asked if the music could be lowered, we were told the owner has it set to create a "certain atmosphere". We had our appetizers, which were good, but a little heavy handed with the seasoning (too much salt). We then decided to take our burgers to go, and when we got home found them raw and without any seasoning . These were $15 burgers, ala carte! If you want a good burger, go to Darby's, it's cheaper and better!

Good but growing pains. The brunch dishes were well thought out but many were poorly executed. Overcooked potato pancakes, overcooked and dry sausage, cold French toast. It seemed as though the cook was still learning a menu that was beyond him. All that said I will probably try it again. If they could get the food out fresh and hot the Oakwood could rock.

Thankfully made a reservation on a saturday night. Service was attentive but not over the top. Small menu offered a good variety of food. French onion soup fills you up, so no need for another course! Beet salad delicious. Mussels were okay but sauce too much like a bowl of tomato sauce. Scallops and pulled pork was delicious. Too full for dessert, will go back. Music got cranked at about 8 PM which made talking a bit of a chore.

My fifth or sixth time here. Took at least 4 visits to get beyond ordering the burger which could be the best in town. Poutine with smoked brisket is addictive. Have now worked my way into the menu and have yet to be less than wowed. Nice beer selection and wine list will keep most happy. Great place to come with 2 or a group.

This was a birthday treat for me and I chose the restaurant for its local fare and Oceanwise listing. I was thrilled. We ate early and the restaurant was quiet - we sat next to the fireplace and enjoyed the ambience. The service was friendly, prompt and caring. The food was great - crackling was shared followed by the Sable fish which was cooked to perfection and the strip loin steak on miniature square fried potatoes. Dessert - yes it was a birthday was carrot cake and appledumpling - the serving sizes are large and we should have shared that course. Red Truck lager was on special and was really good! A very enjoyable evening.

This place has a small, smart menu and everything seems to be prepared very well. We've been back a couple of times, and between us have had 6 different appetizers, 5 different mains, and not one thing hasn't been delicious! Menu ranges from burger (excellent!) to really outstanding sablefish, so while small, appeals to different tastes and pocketbooks. Comfortable booths, too.

Love the Canadiana cabin meets Asian fusion decor. Too bad the staff didn't know how to work the tv's. Our meal was ok but the sablefish (one of my favourite fish) was awful - white goo - but the vegetables were perfect. The mussels had been sitting in the white wine broth too long. The salad was ordinary, french onion soup salty and the bread and black butter wasn't worth the $4. We walked into the Oakwood with high hopes -hopefully an off night because the place has great potentional! The brunch and local yup bar scene will keep this place going unless the kitchen can live up to their dinner menu. Also seems to be a favourite for large groups -

It was our second visit to this restaurant and it was much busier than it had been on our first visit. The service and the food were better the first time, so I surmise that they are having a few "growing pains" because our first visit was amazing, and we will give it another try! The owner was obviously overwhelmed, and I presume the kitchen was too, but the menu, which is quite small offers some fabulous and unconventional choices.

A Killer Chef meets comfort casual! This place has a relaxed atmosphere where you could hop on a stool at the bar and have a beer and some AMAZING poutine - or with the big tables you could have a large party in a really great environment! We were a party of 8 and told the chef beforehand when we booked (KEY) about the special requests- then we all ate off the chefs menu of creations. He just brought what he thought we should have and it was PERFECT! I loved Everything we ate but LOVE LOVED the poutine and the Burger- Carpaccio was unique and great- The Ravioli was hearty and delish...Oh and the desert...SO GOOD! We tried all of them! This restaurant has a small but smart menu, with a range of mains that provides something for almost anyone. The burger is outstanding, the game hen with cauliflower puree is outstanding, and the salmon-- with its very crisp skin and moist interior, served on a pea soup and vegetable base-- is unique and among the very best in this city. The appetizers are generous and very good as well, with grilled artichoke salad, a short rib pot pie, and tuna duo real standouts. Pricing for this quality of food is extremely reasonable; Oakwood may be the best deal in town right now. The decor is pretty nice West Coast comfy, the servers upbeat and friendly, but the kitchen is its real strength. I've willingly paid a lot more for food not as good.

Booked a reservation for 2 through Open Table for Saturday night (the recorded message indicates reservations only for 8 or more). Reservation not required - empty except for us at 6pm. High tables + bar chairs or benches. The ?owner came to tell us how great the food was - all 'made from scratch', repeating what's on the website and menu - giving us high expectations! The server spoke quickly - had to ask her to repeat things. Daily soup was tasty -no bread for the table or with the soup. Salmon and scallops were under seasoned, but not overcooked. Very limited wine - plenty of beers on tap. Cocktail was OK, not outstanding. The bill came before we had decided on coffee/dessert, so we left early! Priced too high for glorified pub.
