A word from Maison - Lancaster
An intimate, farm driven, urban cookery.

In its most simple form, we are in the business of feeding people. A business that we love and take a great deal of pride in and an act at the core of what it is to be human. To us, there is nothing more satisfying that inviting you: our friends, family, farmers and neighbors into our home, nourishing you with soul satisfying food and allowing you to escape the rigors of daily life…if just for a short time.

To us passion, hard work and love all fall into the same category. We have taken the dichotomy of "work life' and 'real life' and distilled them into one—we live above the restaurant. The people we know and love are all around us, we share our home with them and couldn't be happier about it.

The food we had at Maison Lancaster was exceptional. Very fresh, well prepared, great flavors. The service was there when needed. The space is small, which is perfect for a smaller group and for keeping the noise level down. Our entire experience was top-notch. Sadly, we were only visiting Lancaster, and I wish we had Maison in our city. But we will be back on our next visit.

Excellent food as always. Menu is rather limited but adequate. Tables for two are a bit too close together as you can literally hear everything the couple next to you is saying. Wait staff is excellent and BYOB makes it very a very reasonable option when one takes into account the quality of the food. We will continue to return to one if our Lancaster favorites.

This was our first visit to Maison and we had an excellent experience. The food was well described and presented by our server. Speaking to those dining around us, everyone was pleased with what they had ordered. So, we were not alone in our praise of the meal. Even though we boxed some of our main course to take home, we saved just a little room for dessert and that also was a treat. Being BYOB was a plus as we could bring along a favorite bottle of wine. We will definitely return.

First, I loved the decor. The tables are close & cozy. The servers, Nate & Christian, did a phenomenal job. All the food was just a little off. We started with oysters. They were served with pickled ramps. Very odd combination. Extremely overpriced & now I understand why it was the one menu item without a price listed. Next we tried the foie gras & chicken liver mousse. The chicken liver was very overpowering & didn't marry well w the foie gras. Entrees consisted of Cornish Game Hen & Beef Cheeks with polenta and leeks. The hen had toasted bread crumbs that was just a weird consistency. The Beef was very tender but bland. The dessert chocolate selection was mediocre & not worth $15. Overall, we were disappointed & will not return.

We loved the ambiance, the chillout/lounge music, the service, and the bread. The appetizers were pretty good, but both of our dinners were so heavy on the Salt that you couldn't taste distinct flavors of the dishes.

We felt rushed the minute we arrived. We had a party for 4 and they had us at a small table. When we tried to move the table a few inches to get into our seats, a waiter told us quite abruptly to not move the table because they all were mapped out for a specific spot. The food was mediocre and very over priced for what we got. It's a quaint place with a lot of potential but this was our second time there and we will probably not return.

Menu is basically the daily specials and those choices have been limited on my last few visits. Heavy on pork dishes and the chef is found of braised then chopped entrees. Not always my favorite. Salad selections are usually terrific. The restaurant is a step away from excellent.

Went for the first time on a Friday night. Food was fantastic, loved the country bread, had the rosemary olive oil cake for dessert, was excellent almost on the savory side, but that's was unique and great about it.....only thing I would of like to have seen was an ice cream or a whip of some kind with the dessert, that would still keep the flavors of the cake but simply add some creaminess to the plate. Service was great, was only disappointed at not being asked if we wanted coffee with dessert, then was even more disappointed in seeing other tables enjoy French press coffee, which happens to be my favorite . Feel the wait staff dropped the ball on that one. Overall, my fav place in Lancaster so far...will return on future visits. :)

It started out odd: we stood at the door unacknowledged for minutes. Then we were offered a seat at "the chef's table" "in the back" which was "a little more private." It was the bar facing the kitchen. Two waiters were serving. Each of them attempted to get us wine glasses, tell us what menu item they were missing, etc. Then it became much more pleasant. We got our wine glasses. We ordered the burrata which was served with delicious oily, crunchy bread, prosciutto and sorrel leaves. They brought us extra bread without asking. The beef cheeks were succulent and not over-salted. The pasta was al dente. We were checked at appropriate intervals but largely left alone. We stayed for coffee and desert.

  • Farm To Table, Even in January
    KEDines
    Dined on 1/8/2014
Maison is a lovely neighborhood farm to table restaurant - even in the relatively barren winter months. The kitchen continues to build dishes around local products, but fills them out with non-seasonal products. Our two salads were outstanding - the warm bacon dressing on the lyonnaise salad tempering the bitter edge to the frisee, and the blood orange sections in the winter lettuce salad harmonizing with the bits of ricotta salata and pistachios. The main dish of braised oxtail on polenta and kale, topped with smoked mozzarella, was rich and satisfying, perfect for a cold winter day. The ambiance is farmhouse casual and cozy, and BYO makes this an affordable treat.

I think dinner at Maison was the best meal I've had in the area in years. I love central PA and enjoy good restaurants here regularly, but Maison stood out. The staff was accommodating and thoughtful and made us feel comfortable, and the food was stunning. Over a week later, I am still thinking fondly of the Cornish game hen over wheat berries, with pomegranate seeds and baby carrots. Perfectly tender, with a subtle crisp on the outside, the meat matched perfectly with the texture of the wheat and pomegranate. Dessert drizzled with local honey was amazing as well. The atmosphere was cozy and quiet. I look forward to my next visit.

Although Maison is tucked away along Prince Street, once you have arrived the real experience begins. A small and close atmosphere can make having a private conversation a little difficult, but the ambiance and service is worth it! Simplistic and back to the roots of what is important helps make this experience! The staff are courteous, friendly, and offer great recommendations. The food is a little less than traditional, but had a great taste and was well worth the money. Paired with a great bottle of wine and good company, Maison shines above the rest!

Even though Maison is on the main street through Lancaster - it is easy to miss. The close-knit community feel is excellent. The down side of this is you do not go to this restaurant if you are really seeking an intimate/romantic time with your significant other. The tables are close together - so all conversations are easily heard by the rather close neighbors. However - all that aside - the food is EXCELLENT! Love the use of local/in season food. The creativity in menu choices is like no other. Menu selection is not huge - but not a problem because it is still difficult to choose since everything is delightful!

My husband and I stumbled upon this restaurant recently on a whim and are so grateful. Everything we have tried has been delicious. Talk about farm fresh!!!! The staff is also very warm and friendly. They were very accomodating and created the most scrumptious veggie plate ever with red grits, romanesco, kale, radishes....OMG sooooo good. A lot of times the veggie options leave a lot to be desired at restaurants...this was perfection. Highly reccomend the spicy brussel sprouts as an app...we ordered them both times and they were really good. However, the menu is constantly changing to serve what is in season - so get 'em while you can! Important to know - if you like wine with your dinner you will have to bring your own.

You might think it would be hard to improve upon a meal when your companion remarks about her first course, "Those brussels sprouts are among the best things I've ever eaten." But that's before the main course arrived: homemade cavatelli tossed with chunks of braised rabbit, enliven by a stir of fresh herbs that raise an already-flavorful ragu several more notches. At Maison, you'll find a thoughtful, limited menu of house-made and locally sourced, very well-prepared starters, mains, and desserts. No frou frou, just delicious food. It's not a stretch to say that the approach, service, menu and preparation would stand up well in Brooklyn or Portland, OR.

This restaurant could exist in any city in the world and be successful. Truly authentic farm to fork dining. We have been to famous slow food dining establishments in NYC that cannot begin to compare to the meal we had at Maison. Chef is truly an artist and his palette of fresh produce and meat to work with is some of the finest on the world. Endless potential for this young restaurant! Everything was perfect at Maison; the food, atmosphere, and service left nothing to be desired... Except to keep coming back for more.
