A word from Hugo's Restaurant
Founded in 1988, Hugo’s restaurant sits at the edge of Portland’s historic Old Port district. In its third generation of ownership Hugo’s continues to offer refined and delicious cuisine. We source our produce, game, fish and meat locally—we’re lucky to work with Maine’s best ingredients. With both tasting menus and à la carte options you can join us for an extravagant feast or a couple of courses.

Like our pantry, our dining room is dependent on Maine’s best: sculptors, painters, carpenters, and iron-workers collaborated to create a space that evokes our location. Wrapped around our open kitchen, a large red birch bar occupies much of the interior. With its exposed brick walls, soft wood tones, and plush leather, the dining room’s modest luxury sets the stage for an unforgettable meal.

We LOVE Hugo's. My husband and I go for special occasions and just a night out. We have eaten at the tables, at the bar, along the wall at the banquet seats. The staff are amazing, the service is excellent. We always order the chef tasting of 5 or 8 courses and often do it with the wine pairing. The food is - beautiful, delicious, lovely, enjoyable, and always a wow factor. I will add that most menus require a very open mind and willingness to try anything. The adventurous diner will love what is served. The bar drinks are fun and always changing. Hugo's is a total enjoyment each and every visit!

Had the eight course blind tasting menu. Incredible! I could have licked each and every plate. Every time a course came out the table went silent. Best meal of all time. Pleased to have a fine dining experience in a relatively casual setting. Love to eat a five star meal without the pretentiousness usual to such establishments. Highly recommended.

  • This would be a great restaurant
    OpenTable Diner Since 2009
    Dined on 12/21/2011
This would be a great restaurant if they would change to a more standard menu format. The current menu format is that all the dishes are very small and meant for "tasting". They recommend 3-5 dishes per person to comprise a full meal. But the prices are so high that even 3 small dishes can easily add up to $50. Each small dish is nicely prepared, but this format did not work for me. I would find it more enjoyable and satisfying to order a more typical meal: a small salad, a main course, and maybe a small dessert, at a more reasonable price, and have enough to take home as leftovers. Then I would feel that I got my money's worth.

The food at Hugo's is as well prepared as anywhere in the world. The offerings are incredible delicate and tasty. The parings of food and spice superior. The portions are small and the price is high. There is good value for the amount of work that goes into the preparation. In all, a wonderful, and rare opportunity to try many dishes and flavors: all delicious.

We decided to take the blinded food tasting. It was an adventure for sure! I tried things I never would have like gooey duck, and fois gros. not my favorite but it was prepared extremely well. My husband thoroughly enjoyed it. The bacon biscuits were delicious as well as the rabbit entry. the root vegetable desserts were so impressive. Who would know you could make them into a successful dessert! Top notch food and service. the wine pairing was wonderful. We will definitely go back.

My fiance and I had the 6 course tasting menu paired with wine. The food was well prepared, tasty and creative. A series of small bites that were well executed. The wine parings all worked very well, the pace of the meal was quite slow but our server told us that they were busier than expected. I would like to return to try some of the other items from the a la carte menu.

There's something about Portland. We travel around New England every weekend and the city with the most innovative restaurants is Portland. Hugo's is our new favorite. Their menu consists of small plates and you pick two or three. We each ordered two dishs plus desert, I had the monkfish, my girlfriend had the duck terrine and we both had the poached lobster. Everything was perfectly prepared and we loved them all, but of the dishes that we had the monkfish was my favorite.

A fabulous night of dining. This was our first time back to Hugo's since they changed the format of the menu (I know - it's been way too long!) My husband and I each enjoyed several small plates and were left fully satisfied - each dish was thoughtfully balanced in flavor, texture, and presentation. The service was well timed - leaving us time to chat between plates, but never wondering where the next dish was. A true dining experience which left us wanting for nothing - except a return trip sometime soon.

While the food was high quality and I appreciated that they use multiple parts of the fish, there were some areas of concern. We are a mostly vegetarian couple and asked if they could do a tasting menu that accommodated that. Instead we got a menu that was heavily fish-based despite our request. The vegetable and grain "side dishes" were excellent and I've seen other high-end restaurants adjust to us in a tasting menu format.I wish they would have either communicated that they couldn't accommodate us or worked harder. For the price we paid it wasn't worth it. Also, the wait staff was not especially friendly.

Everything was great but can't go often as it is way too expensive. 60- 80 dollars per person just for food (not dessert) is too much and we were hungry soon after. Make the portions larger or the food less expensive. The food, however was amazing and very beautiful.

This was our first visit to Hugo's. We went based on other reviews. We were hesitant to try the tasting menu. It is definitely an experience. Patrick, our waiter, was a wonderful "guide" and the small plates were beautifully presented. We had three dishes each plus dessert. The cost and small size of the plates may detract from the experience. Our dinner companion remarked Foodies will eat this upas we left that he had room for a bowl of pasta.

HORRIBLY over-priced - ridiculously small portions that did not taste terribly special - I "get" the small but artistic high-quality food concept but this was just stupid - $16 for a beet "salad" that consisted of 5 or 6 baby beets the size of nickels drizzled with some dressing - was this a joke of some kind (hidden cameras)? - was the most disappointing part of a really lovely trip to Portland Maine.

The chef is very talented. Dishes were thoughtful and flavorful. I don't think I'll return though due to the following issues: Service - I didn't care for our waiter. When We told him it was our first time at the restaurant I felt like he interpreted that to mean it was our first time AT a restaurant. I found him flippant- maybe we weren't racking up as high a tab as he would have liked. He also confused the cheese offerings-told us there were 3 local Maine cheeses available. Yet, a Virginia cheese arrived at our table. We were seated in the middle of the restaurant. It's an inauspicious location with wait staff buzzing by left and right. Also, the atmosphere is a bit too Pottery Barn for my taste. I prefered experiences at Bresca/Fore St.

My sister (from Chicago) and I (from Southern Oregon) had a one-night only opportunity to enjoy dinner at one of Portland's top restaurants and we chose Hugo's from among several recommendations. We decided on Hugo's six-course tasting menu with the appropriate wine pairings and were impressed with the use of a variety of local ingredients as well as with the beautiful presentation of each course. All in all, a truly delicious and memorable dining experience. When in Portland again, we would definitely choose to dine there again, this time for the eight-course tasting menu and wine pairings. A print copy of the tasting menu we enjoyed was given to each of us as we were finishing our coffee and dessert . . . a very nice touch!

The food was excellent. My only problem was the cost - the servings are all appetizer size and so they recommend ordering 4 or more each. The only problem is their prices are not appetizer prices. So we ended up spending more than we normally do in a nice restaurant in Manhattan.
