A word from Restaurant Nora
In April 1999, Restaurant Nora became America's first certified organic restaurant. This means that 95% or more of everything that you eat at the restaurant has been produced by certified organic growers and farmers all who share in Nora's commitment to sustainable agriculture. Nora always offers seasonal, fresh organic food, prepared in a healthy, balanced way and enjoys a "big following" of environmentalists and politicians, who can eat here with a clear conscience, knowing that what's on their plate hasn't polluted the environment, is healthy for them, and tastes good too. Nora offers a special chef's tasting menu, which is perfectly accompanied by a spectacular choice of wines from our award winning wine list, featuring over 100 exceptional wines from small wine producers.

i thought it was great. but felt ripped off by service. although we ordered the fix priced menu, we were repeatedly told we could order from regular menu. well, of course we COULD. although we stuck with the program three fourths of the way through, the head waiter (he was there 10 years, a real know it all) said there was only one or two really good desserts, and we ordered the ones he recommended. slightly surprised to see bill bigger than i had planned, as there were approxitely forty dollars added for desserts (at 10 per), which was not what i had expected when we so clearly had ordered the fixe price menu. he then came back to congratulate himself on the dessert recommendations. guess i would have preferred knowing the desse

I loved the menu and the food. I was surprised to see a lot of small children in the dining room. The service was very good , the dining room is bit tired looking and not that comfortable, but I would go back often.

I would not consider myself an overly large person, yet the chair that I sat in was really narrow and VERY uncomfortable. It was my daughters b'day so I did not want to make a fuss. The service was really mediocre, our waiter was inattentive. I think that there is a self fulfilling belief, on the part of wait staff, that woman who are alone do not tip well so they don't spend the time or care on their service . The food on the other hand was A++. I had the Maine crab app. It was very interesting :surprising w/ different textures, the flavors were complx but did not detract from the fl of the crab. The main course of scallops was as remarkable but too sparse. One more scallop please. Too bad the front of the house lets the chef down!

Restaurant was darling, meal was absolutely delicious. Not thrilled with the service. Our waiter dropped off our $324 tab and completely disappeared. Never returned to ask about the meal, thank us for our patronage. Another server took the tab, took our dessert order. This disappearance cost our server a 20% tip (there was a tip, but it was less) and may cost restuarant return customers (there are so many choices in DC - even organic choices, e.g., Corduroy). Oh well.

we got off to a bad start when we had to wait an hour late for a table. but, nora's redeemed itself with great food and they comp'd a bottle of wine and dessert for the hassel. I would highly recommend nora's but hope they get control of their reservations...no one with a reservation should have to wait an hour.

We love Nora's and tend to celebrate all of our important occasions there. Tuesday we celebrated our second wedding anniversary. Nora's was the only choice for us for that day because two years ago we held our rehearsal dinner there. Many of the wait staff have been there for a few years now and it is nice to see that they are still there when we go, and we're delighted that they recognize us each time we're there. Alice Speck

Gave us a small table in the center of the restaurant next to an obnoxious guy who was loud and wouldn't stop talking and bragging about himself --- We asked for a small table in a corner when making the reservation. Service was not good as we waited for bills, menus, ordering, etc. Our waiter seemed to care more about his 4 and 8 top tables than us. Food was good though. So, not an awful experience, just not one we will try again.

Restaurant Nora is not always consistent, but this time was a home run! Probably the best duck breast I have ever had. The only thing that would have made it better would have been a table in the atrium, the best spot in the restaurant. Service was attentive but not obtrusive -- not an easy combination to find.

    Godzilla
    Dined on 4/3/2008
The service and atmosphere are great, but for the price the food was very substandard. Of 2 entrees ordered, both were very over-cooked (fish and meat); this is inexcusable at a restaurant with a high-end, simplistic organic motif relying on the natural flavor of select ingredients over complex sauces and marinades. Worth the money for the service & atmosphere (they did not charge for the disputed entrees), but not a place I would highly recommend for its cuisine.

I live in the neighborhood near Nora's and always run by it, but this was my first chance to dine there. The reservations through OpenTable were simple and the service from the moment we walked in the door was cordial and helpful. There was a 10-15 minute wait for our table and the bartender was friendly. The menu and wine list were excellent and it was difficult to make a choice with so many great things on the menu. The key word to describe my food was fresh - in every aspect imaginable. Maybe it was due to the marketing of Nora's organic credentials on the menu, but the natural flavors of the ingredients stood out and truly sang. I would recommend Nora's to anyone looking for a special occasion dinner or if someone else is paying!

A wonderful place for a great meal using local suppliers and organic ingredients. Portions are just the right size...big enough to satisfy but small enough to save room for dessert and still not feel "stuffed." One caveat: Can't get diet Coke, since it's not organic. But non-organic alcoholic beverages are okay.

The wine list is concise, intelligently chosen and mostly organic or biodynamic, but greater concern for the handling of the wine BEFORE it gets to the restaurant is needed. I had a bottle of heat-damaged wine - damage that I'm sure happened on the way to Nora's.

Was very impressed with Nora, given DC's typical association with steakhouses, processed food and the like. The organic feel and fresh taste made it all worth it. Not the most elegant gourmet food, but doesn't try to be. Celebrated my birthday and my friends' engagement and were definitely treated well throughout. Overall, a bit pricey, but given it's reputation, it's niche and that it's in a major dining city, I definitely understand. Nora is a great place for a "less than wedding, but more than typical date" celebration. Would definitely go back and enjoy the changing menu. Thanks!

This is a fabulous, unique, genuinely organic restaurant. The food is spectacular and creatively conceived, the service is professional without being intrusive, my favorite Washington dining experience. Dined on 3/20/2008
In general, we were happy with the food and would recommend people to try the restaurant. However, we will probably not go back. The overall price point, together with the fact that they do not allow for corkage (to be fair, we didn't discount this fact too much because their wine selection, while not having much depth, did have some very good value wines), makes me prioritize many other DC restaurants before Nora. What gives me the strongest negative impression was the inconsistency of the dishes. While we enjoyed all of the ingredients, half of the dishes were excellent, while the other half very much missed the mark. For the ones we did not like, we felt they were overly complex, and we expect more at this level.

While the food was excellent, we were very disappointed with the seating. I had in my reservation asked for a table for two in a quiet corner, instead we were placed at a table in between 2 other tables for 2 people. The other tables were only about 20 cm away from ours; as a result, we could listen to every word that was said on the neighoring tables, in stereo. Unfortunately for us, the restaurant was completely full when we arrived, therefore there was no possibility to seat us somewhere else. Our impression was that the restaurant was trying to maximize profits by squeezing in as many tables as possible, at the cost of a pleasant dining experience. I would not patronize Nora again for this reason!

The highly touted all organic food was poorly prepared. A dish with fish and vegetables had such highly salted sauce that both were overcome; and both were overcooked. A ceasar salad was undistinguished. A leek and goat cheese tart was good. Although the room had many staff, it always seemed that we were looking for our waitress. Finally, in spite of a fantastic wine list, only two choices were available by the glass.

Our second time here in the last 90 days - we decided to give it another try, but the five of us agreed - been there and there are much better choices for the dollar. Service problems (20 min wait beyond 8:45pm reservation, rude receptionist was in over her head with many patrons miffed about wait and server who went AWOL during the dinner - had to pour our own wines during meal) problems were graciously responded by the manager - pre-dinner drinks and special bouche amuse, but the service did not improve. Thankfully server told me to avoid my first choice of entree (Pork Chop - "the other tables tell me it is tough!"). Veal dish ordered by one at our table looked to me, & tasted to him like it was boiled! Shame - Nora was such a gem

    OpenTable Diner Since 2005VIP

I said "don't recall" on noise because it was both quiet and loud. There is a "main" dining area and a separate room with 8-10 tables that adjoins the main dining area through a 4' walkway. While our dinner was quite quiet, intimate almost, we did arrive for an early dinner (6:30) and except for the last part of dessert, there were no noisy parties in our area. When we left I did notice the main dining room was quiet noisy in comparison to our table location. I felt the service could have been a bit more efficient in terms of time between checking on drinks, ordering, etc. No complaints whatsoever about food, presentation, friendliness of staff, etc. I would definitely return again.
