A word from Nina's Trattoria
My inspiration for Nina's Trattoria comes from two of the greatest cooks I have known, my mother, Nina, and my grandmother, Nona Caterina. Growing up in an apartment beneath my grandparents' household, I was often treated to culinary delights. On holidays the entire family enjoyed the most elaborately prepared meals. Nonna was from the Mediterranean coastline village of San Pier Niceto, Province of Messina, Sicily where she lived on a farm.
Our Menu, like Mama Nina's and Nona's consists of fresh local produce and the best the butcher and fish market have to offer. Our recipes consist of a few family specialties, and they go on to include traditional and contemporary dishes from various regions of Italy including: Calabria, Basilicata, Abruzzo, Lazio, Tuscany, and Trentino-Alto Adige.
Buon appetito!

This was my second dining experience at Nina's.... the first was for lunch, and it was so good, I had to go back for a dinner.... don't miss this Italian Market gem! It's a BYOB which isn't clearly indicated on the Open Table reservation form.

Overall, it was great. We did the Chef's tasting and had a 3 person party. We received three different appetizers, entrees and desserts. All were wonderful. The service was really great too, but towards the end of our visit, the quality of service declined rapidly. We were brought dessert about 20 minutes after we had all finished our entrees and received the leftovers in a to-go box. Then, we had to wait another 5 minute for utensils. We were billed for coffee that we didn't get. I pointed this out as they check was collected and was told the coffee would be taken off the bill. However, we then received the coffee about 5 minutes later. It took another 20 minutes after dessert for me to get my change, and I never got a copy of the bill.

We had a Groupon chef's tasting menu. This is the second time I have had it. Last time, they brought out a delicious meatball appetizer. this time, we got artichokes and a salad. I really wish the meeatballs had been included. We had a great penne with gorgonzola and gnocchi. We were so full that we barely had room for dessert- an eggnog ice cream and nutella pudding with creme fresche. (There was a little too much creme fresche, though. Could barely taste the pudding). Overall, the food is great.

It was my first time there, and I took a date with me. We were both pleasantly surprised. I had used a groupon for the chef selected three course dinner, and it was great. The staff were very knowledgeable, professional, and friendly. We were in a bit of a hurry towards the end of our meal, so it would have been nice if they were more attentive, but they were working hard as other reservations had come in. It's a cozy spot for a date or a special occasion, and I would recommend it to anyone.

Went to Nina's for a special occasion. The restaurant was a little cramped, but it added to the allure...it made it a bit more intimate. Even with the small size, the noise was never too loud where I couldn't hear the person across from me. The servers were attentive, but not overbearing. The food was delicious. My hanger steak was cooked as ordered and tasted great, the potatoes were exceptional. My date enjoyed her crab risotto as well. Most importantly the prices were very reasonable. I would recommend Nina's to anyone looking for a delicious, quiet, & inexpensive dinner.

Excellent, fresh and light food. We tried a little of everything - chicken, pasta , soup risotto - no disappointments. We were seated near the door and got a rush of icy cold air each time customers came in, and the credit card machine was not operating, so it was cash only, but those were the only negatives. We were celebrating the birthdays of 3 teenage girls and they all loved the meal and the atmosphere.

We had the tasting menu. Salad and meatball appetizers were great as were the pasta entrees . The deserts were also excellent. Service was ok; waiters were friendly but the food took a bit of time (worth the wait). All was great except that we asked for more bread and got old reheated bread (the initial bread was awesome). All in all you should go to this place.

First time here; we picked Nina's due to the overwhelming positive reviews on open table. Appetizers (meatballs and artichokes) were great and salads (pricey and a few too many onions) were very good and gave us high hopes for entrees. Dinners were a disappointment; chicken parmesan with side of pasta, although good was closer to pasta with a side of chicken parmesan.. Our other entree; mushroom risotto was bland at best. Not many options for desert. Might try again but with so many byob's in Philly; could be a while.

We found Nina's on Open Table when looking for a BYOB in the Italian Market area. What a find! The menu is small, which I like, and offers a nice variety. Their homemade foccacia was out of this world. We asked if they would substitute their mushroom risotto for au gratin potatoes with the hangar steak and they gladly did. It was not as good as what we made ourselves in Venice but it was very good! We will definitely go back.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2013
    Dined on 9/22/2012
My favorite South Philly Italian restaurant to this point had been L'Angolo's. I have to say, the quality of the food at Nina's surpasses that. Nina's is small and probably seats around 25 to 30. There may be a larger room for a group in the back. The menue is limited which in my mind is a good sign. Our waiter recommended the gnochi which was outstanding. The meatball appetizer had a perfect bright tasty marina sauce. Excellent restaurant which we plan on returning to.

This is such a fun locaiton and cozy setting. Nice wait staff. Went several months ago, food was good, not great, but good snd interesting. Went recently and food was terrible -- took out-of-town guests, we all had something different -- everything, but the salad, was essentially tasteless. Not one of us finished our meal. Very disappointed and won't be back.

Stumbled upon Nina's when their outdoor chimney caught our attention. Located in the Italian market with an extremely warm inviting outdoor atmosphere. My friends and I had been seated outside next to their wood burning fireplace and our server who we believe was from Italy was very accommodating. He recommended some of their more popular dishes which we decided upon. The Ravioli which were cooked perfect and slightly al dente which we prefer instead of overcooking them were made with lobster and what seemed to be a bisque sauce with chunks of lobster inside. This was my favorite. My friends split the involtini with meatballs which was just like my grandmother makes it especially the meatballs. Another bonus it's a byob!
