  • Fine dinning but??

Alright, this restaurant is considered the fine dining experience at the spruce point inn. You must remember you are dining in Maine. A fine dinning experience in Maine will not compare to NYC, London, Marina del ray. I was completely happy with the quality of food and service because it was what I expected. For example. Service time is a slower, servers are seasonal workers who are working really hard but everything is forced. They aren't like the professional severs at some fine dinning restaurants. I would go back because the food was good and the views are to spectacular.

This was our 3rd visit to 88 at the Spruce Point Inn. 88 was where we celebrated our wedding day and we make a special visit each year to enjoy a romantic evening. The service and cuisine is excellent, the view of the water beautiful. We hope to come back each year and celebrate at our special restaurant.

We went for a birthday celebration in a private room and then again in 88 and both times had to wait over an hour for food and when it arrived 3 of the 6 meals were lukewarm. Potatoes were like paste. Luckily we were with very good friends and family and we had a beautiful sunset. It used to be one of our favorite special occasion restaurants, but no longer.

Great place, but they need a sommelier. We ordered a bottle of champagne and they brought it out, opened it, and served us warm champagne. Why even open a warm bottle? As for the food, it was very good. Scallops appetizer had three large scallops, which were perfectly cooked; the pink peppercorn sauce was delicious, but needed more. Raw oysters from Glidden Point were clean and cold. 88 gets big points for the thoughtful, nice touches - a free glass of champagne to start; an amuse bouche; warm cheddar biscuits; and a parting gift. Chicken breast stuffed with arugula cranberry stuffing and a side of risotto was high quality chicken and super flavorful, served sliced. We also enjoyed the sliced, rare tuna, maple glazed. Try it!

We were a little disappointed with the service at Spruce Point. It has a good reputation for being one of the nicest places in Boothbay but the experience for us was not all that great. We waited over an hour for our dinner while everyone else in the restaurant got served. And to top it off, our leftovers that we asked to have wrapped up were thrown out. We were celebrating my Mom's birthday and she was just overall disappointed with how the night went there. The food tasted great though.

88 is a magnificent gem in Boothbay Harbor. The food was delicious and perfectly prepared. The menu was diverse with a combination of local cuisine and traditional entrees. We traveled with 2 children (10 & 6) who are well behaved. The chef prepared special entrees for them. The staff was excellent - they made the entire experience very special. I highly recommend and will definitely visit 88 the next time we are in Maine.

"88" is Spruce Point Inn's "fine dining" restaurant, and it lives up to that description. We celebrated an anniversary there last weekend and could not have been more pleased. The service was perfect and the food was gorgeous -- wish I could post pictures! After a complimentary glass of champagne, an amuse bouche of gazpacho set the tone -- it was delicious! The Damariscotta oysters are (according to my husband) the best in the world. The signature salad, with its nasturtiums and goat cheese, is almost too pretty to eat, but I'm glad I did! We each had the lobster, beautifully presented and served with corn-off-the-cob, fingerling potatoes, and drawn butter. The hot fudge brownie was deliciously decadent. A perfect anniversary spot!

We chose Spruce Point for our only fancy meal during our one-night July 4 stay in Boothbay largely because it was out of town and thus parking would be easy. Eating at 7pm meant we got a table overlooking the harbor and could watch all the preparations for the festivities. By the way, the food and service were very good, too! Started us off with a complimentary glass of bubbly which my wife stayed with through the dinner, followed by a single scallop 'amuse-bouche'. We each had excellent seafood appetizers and entrees, with no need for dessert. The server was attentive but not hovering and the wine list is varied and well-organized. Only negative is that the Maine 'Cellardoor' wines are overpriced relative to the other offerings.

This is a magnificent location with the open Atlantic framed wonderfully from your table. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed and made to feel like special guests. The service was professional, attentive and engaging, making appropriate suggestions and accurate descriptions of the meals. We started with the Glidden Point oysters which are local, plump and deliciously briny. My wife had the tenderloin which was prepared perfectly and was as tender as could be. I had the steamed lobster which was perfectly done and cracked before plating to make what sometimes can be a messy experience into a most enjoyable and satisfying one. At the end, we were presented with Inn- packaged bran muffins as a late night snack or morning treat.

There was a wedding on the premises while we were dining, which the waiters were working at as well as the restaurant. It took almost 45 minutes to get our appetizers. None of the other tables around us were cleared from the previous diners, and our tablecloth had some very recent wine stains all over. We cut them some slack due to the wedding, but when they were out of the desserts and wine we wanted, it left us slightly frustrated! At least the food was good.

With its stunning water view, the ambiance can't be beat! The food tasted good, but the the service was bad. First of all, the waiter was unfamiliar with the special saying it was some kind of black river fish; he spoke barely above a whisper and had to repeat everything; then the kitchen refused to split our salad that we shared. No one picked up our used dishes until asked (this was evident at other tables as well). We had to ask for a chiller for our wine and after pouring our first glass, our waiter never refilled a glass from the bottle we purchased. While these complaints may seem trivial, if one is paying over $100 for a meal, more is expected. I guess we should have heeded the poor reviews on TripAdvisor and dined elsewhere.

Disappointing, except for the view. The cedar plank salmon was very good but the bed of jasmine rice was dry & obviously microwaved after cooking. Veggies were mediocre. The roll were dry & most unappealing. We actually could not even eat them. Our waiter, though sweet & attentive had just started working there having just arrived from Romania & was seriously lacking training. He served our iced tea warm & without ice. The word is clearly out about the 88's mediocrity because on a beautiful summer Friday night only 5 tables were occupied. I would not return there. This dinner was to celebrate a special occasion & except for the view there was absolutely nothing special about the 88.

We had a group of eight, which can be a challenge, but the seating was comfortable. The view is magnificent. The menu selection and the presentation of the dishes will appeal to "foodies", but the picky eater can definitely find something to like. Service was very good - servers have clearly been trained. Prices are in line with other restaurants in the area, so price does not limit this restaurant to a special occasion. However, for a romantic dinner or special occasion, this is an excellent choice. Overall, we were very pleased and plan to return.

Our experience at the Spruce Point Inn was not a good one. When I made the reservation, I noted that it was my husband's 70th birthday and he wanted to celebrate it at the Inn because he used to work there when he was a teenager. When we arrived promptly for our 6:30 reservation, we were told that we would not be able to have our food order put in for at least a half hour because the cook was busy with another party of 18 people. When our food finally arrived it was not very good. My husband's chowder had a slight burn taste and he was convinced his tenderloin steak was really a cut sirloin. My salmon was very dry. Neither of us wanted to complain during the meal as we were trying to make the best of our special occassion.

My partner and I decided to stay at the Inn and have dinner there our first night. Initially we were the only two in the restaurant. At the recommendation of our waiter (Benjamin) my partner ordered mussels & I scallops as our appetizer. Their must have been 3 dozen mussels in the bowl. Both appetizers were delicious. For our entree's my partner had steak and I took Benjamin's recommendation and ordered the cedar smoked salmon. The steak was outstanding. The salmon was delicious, but I thought the smokiness was a little over powering for the salmon. Dessert consisted of delicious blueberry pie which was outstanding. What we liked was the fact the pie wasn't filled with jelly but a lot of Maine blueberries.

My tenderloin steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare. The shoe string fries were perfect to go with the steak. I asked for and was seated at a corner table by the window. Very important to me since I was traveling, and dining alone. Staff made me feel comfortable, not an easy task always. The view, threw the window while dining is what I hoped for. I seen it in the web page photo's, the table I asked for and sat at. Steak in the state of Maine is not what I came to Maine for (the seafood). The scallops here were great, the clam chowda was perfect. Even the Cellar Door, Maine wine was a hit with me. I can not stress enough, it was the staff here that made, 88 a keeper in my mind. They made me feel as though I was somebody special. R Dokt
