  • Tasty but very loud

Red Lantern had very good food but you have to be looking for this atmosphere: it is unquestionably loud and trendy. The guests are all dressed to impress each other, many have arrived after a few too many drinks, and it can be hard to hear in some areas (couldn't even get a drink at the bar area at 10 pm on a Saturday). If you can find a quiet corner, the food is actually very good: probably the best hot and sour soup I've ever had, really good duck buns, tasty fried rice and lettuce wraps. I'd only suggest going there, though, if you're looking for a bit of a "night"...if you aren't ready for that kind of atmosphere you won't enjoy the fine food.

  • We had a 9:15pm reservation
    OpenTable Diner Since 2011

We had a 9:15pm reservation and was not seated until 10:05pm.. It was purely unacceptable! What is the point of making a reservation if you have to stand for 45min and wait! We really did not want to be eating dinner at 11pm. This was a complete turn-off and set a negative tone to the evening there. The hostess claimed there was a big party they were waiting to finish up. That is understandable that sometimes large parties take up more time than needed, so why didnt they plan accordingly instead of having many people irrate that they had to stand and wait for their table while having a specific time for their reservation. The bar was so overly crowded that we had no option than to stand in the lobby. Some sort of comp would have been nice.

The food was good (had some normal makis, a Special house maki, steak Lo Mein, bread pudding), but overpriced compared to other local sushi or asian restaurants and even other hot spots but I guess this is makes it an "Asian Fusion." The noise level in the restaurant was off the charts, I had to talk in a pretty loud voice just to the person next to me and across the table from me. The bar is at the entrance and is the area is very open so the noise echoes out with the high ceiling of the place. The service was incredibly polite, I felt over polite at times.

  • Great food; noisy; poor valet

This was our second visit to the Red Lantern. We had a table for six, round table, and were there on a Weds. night. The food was overall terrific, except for the pork rolls - not tasty at all, so avoid them. The sushi lobster, shrimp fried rice, steaks, fish - were all excellent. Great desserts and the wine list, a bit eclectic, was great. The noise level was unacceptable - there was no way that I could communicate with the person across the table. They need sound deflectors. Keep an eye on the valet - he opened my hood when trying to take off the parking brake. For $17 the restaurant ought to be able to hire more experienced valets. Red Lantern has a little bit to learn; once it does it could become best of Boston.

I absolutely loved the Red Lantern. The service was outstanding...present, but not in your face. Our waiter made good recommendations. We tried from many different parts of the menu. The tuna tartar is to die for. The best I've ever had. The sushi was good; I've had better, but you have to go to a Japanese owned and run sushi bar for that. The decor is fantastic...there isn't too much to absorb the sound, so if you like quiet dinners, perhaps you should find somewhere else! Overall, it's a treasure, and I hope it's around for a long time.

I had mixed expectations, but we were very impressed with the freshness, flavor, and quality of our dishes. We had the lettuce wraps, green bean tempura, singapore noodles, and chk fried rice. The volume of food was also much larger than we expected, which is never a bad thing. Our waiter was exceptional. I would definitely come back.

We dined on a Sunday night after having to move our reservation back 30 minutes- very accomodating. The duck buns were lacking in flavor but the meat was very tender, same for the char sui dumplings. Lobster rangoon was delicious. I had a steak and lo-mein dish and honestly I could not tell that the noodles were freshly made since it was prepped like a traditional lo-mein. Our waiter was attentive but seemed new because he would clear a glass and then come back for our food orders. The drinks were delicious- great Mai Tai and dessert was very good- the Latern cake. I would eat there again.

The menu is unusual and confusing but the food was good. I think I will enjoy it more when I understand the menu better. It's pricey but a fun atmosphere. A great-looking room and no bad tables. Our waiter Harrison was so charming we would come back just for him. He was very engaging and adorable and took beautiful care of us. Don't order the whole Sea Bass--it's just a deep fried skeleton. But do order the Duck Buns and the Mongolian Beef. The sushi rolls were delicious. I'll come back and try the dishes I did not have, but have since heard enthusiastically recommended.

I really wanted to like Red Lantern because the packaging was great. Unfortunately, the food just doesn't live up to the decor. Red Lantern is Boston's answer to NYC's Tao and Spice Market in New York. The sushi was good as were the dumplings and fried wontons. The street noodles were tasteless and bland and the chicken was a bland version of general tso's/sweet sour. I don't think I'd go again.

The appetizers are wonderful. The next time we return we will order a variety of appetizers for dinner instead of ordering entrees. The entrees are fine, but not worth the cost, especially compared with the appetizers. Also, this is shaping up to be a very chic place--lots of fashionably dressed young people. If you are over 50, you will definitely be in the minority, but very cool!

LOVED IT!!! We'll be back and next time perhaps with many people as the open space is ideal for large parties. Bar scene was great and filling up around 10pm. So glad we went. Slight issue with the check was the only downside. Also, they tried to sit us at the hightops facing the kitchen but after seeing my displeasure they moved us to a large area with a couch (my favorite) next to the windows. I'd skip the Lobster Roll and the Tuna Tempura special roll(2 highest price rolls but not very good) but the Gyoza and Caterpillar roll were incredible. Very affordable night out as well if you order right.
