I always enjoy the Downtowner, but hadn't been for quite awhile. This occasion was a birthday and the restaurant was very accommodating. I had reserved a table for eight when another person added in. When I called to up the party size, I was wary that it would be a problem, but the person I spoke to was very nice (I've gotten attitude from other venues in the past.) Everyone's food was very good - our group ordered from every section of the menu and no one was disappointed. The only warning is to dress lightly - the dining room is extremely warm. There's a large fireplace in the middle that is beautiful for atmosphere, but you feel a bit like you're melting at times. All-in-all, recommend it highly!

My husband and I dined at The Downtowner Woodfire grill before heading to a show at the Ordway. Our server was attentive and friendly and got drinks and a flatbread basket to our table right away. I ordered the 6 oz filet of beef tenderloin with a spinach and goat cheese starter salad and my husband ordered the king salmon with a ceasar salad. Both salads were a good portion size and tasty enough - nothing spectacular. My filet was cooked well and tender, though lacked flavor. My husband's salmon looked a bit over-cooked and he said it was a bit dry. The best part of the meal were the desserts - chocolate mousse tower and molten chocolate cake. On the whole, the ambiance was nice, but the food was not quite up to par for the price.

I have been a St Paul girl all my life and hit the inside of this gem before. It was great. Wonderful staff, ambience and food. Went for my dad's birthday and everyone was so wonderful, they even surprised him with a candle and house dessert. There is not a bad seat in the place and has such a cozy comfortable feel. The smell of the wood fire grill makes you hungry, the chef knows what they are doing. A must try.

The food was wonderful; however the service not so much. Our waitress didn't come to even greet us for several minutes, then she took our drink orders (only one person in our party of 4 had something other that water, a glass of wine). Didn't ask if we wanted appetizers but we ordered one anyway. Asked for one more minute with the menu which turned into 15 and no wine. She came in and out of the room where we were seated several times addressing other tables but never stopped by our or brought the wine. Finally had to seek out the manager to light a fire under her. We were on a bit of a time crunch as we were headed to the Wild game so then everything became a rush rush to get us out. Seem no happy medium..

My mother and I ate there on a Saturday night, and that, by itself, says it Al. This restaurant could not be more welcoming and more caring about its customers. My mother, who's older and not so mobile, got couch solicitous treatment. She was dying for a steak, and the steaks here are great, as well as everything else on both our plates. The restaurant was busy--some kind of big sports tournament was taking place at the Excel Center--and there were family tables, college student tables, tourist tables--you name it. Everyone was having a great time. And this is a great place for steak.

This was our first time at the Downtowner Woodfire Grill and we plan to return soon. It's very cozy inside with a beautiful fireplace and fountains over the bar. There was a piano player but it was not too loud. Two of our party ordered omelets, which they said were terrific. The rest of us ordered combination plates (eggs & pancakes) which were great, too. Fast, friendly service.

We had a great time, the food was yummy -very reasonable! Only complaint is parking was hard to come by and the man at the hostess stand was rude about it when I asked where to park and who to contact regarding a meter that took my money but didn't give me a slip to prove I paid. Waitress was fabulous and personable, made terrific personal recommendations when asked.

Had 8 of us dine Monday night before the Miley concert. I have been to the Downtowner a dozen times when going to events at Xcel. Our group had 3 very good meals and 2 that were just ok and one that should not be on the menu. I tried the pizza and would not recommend. Tasted like a $1.00 Totinos pizza! Try something else like a salad or burger!

Went there first time, loved the warmth of the stone décor. Menu was fun and eclectic with the woodfired and fireroasted items being their specialty. Molly, our server, gave great recommendations. The lamb skewer was delicious, the hummus app had spicy oil with it and they easily accommodated my request to add fresh vegies in with the crackers. Not a ton of parking right next to the restaurant, but apparently there's more space a block away.

Great food, but was bummed with service. I asked if I could pre-order a dessert for y friend's birthday before she got there and surprise her.
