Meat & Potatoes is a high end gastropub in downtown Pittsburgh. Its kitchen takes as its inspiration the idea of elevating comfort food to a gourmet level. Its chefs are inspired by fresh, seasonal ingredients and its bar staff creates innovative cocktails and serves a range of wines by the glass and draught beers, as well. The menu at Meat & Potatoes is a new take on basic. There are classic appetizers like fried pickles, grilled bread and fried Brussels sprouts, as well as more innovative fare like fried pigs ear and buttermilk fried chicken liver. Meat & Potatoes mains include pot roast, salmon and lamb neck cassoulet.

Overpriced for mediocre food. Fries with my hangar steak were way overcooked, too narrowly cut, and cold. Two other steaks ordered medium rare came out rare--barely cooked. This was eventually corrected with more cooking but shouldn't really happen. The server could barely be interested or attentive even though there were very few people in the restaurant. The experience definitely did not justify the very high prices and I would not return.

The bar staff was outstanding! We ate at the bar and they were friendly, had great recommendations on the menu and made us killer cocktails!!

What I loved: The potato selection was pretty funny--they had five potato sides to choose from and the sizes were ample. All foods ordered were pretty tasty. They had a lot of bourbons and high end alcohol (though I just had some wine). The server was really friendly, fun and informative. What I thought was meh: The location is sortuv in a theater, which was weird. The restaurant felt more like a bar than a restaurant, with seating in a galley shaped large room dominated by the central bar. What I could do without: The prices...some entrees were up in the $65.00 range which I thought was a bit much when the burger was affordable at about $21.00. Just all over the place prices. Take home: Good meal, but I might try another place next time.
