Food was good but plating was very poor. Such a smal amount of effort is needed to present the food well on a plate. For the prices and the quality, this was a real miss at this restaurant.

We absolutely love Zingerman's. This wasn't our first, nor will it be our last visit. The goat cheese fondue was fantastic and the service (as always) top notch. Terry was our waiter and he did a great job of juggling his very busy section.

Would not recommend Zingerman's Roadhouse. The food was poor, not presented well and overpriced. The restaurant has smaller separate rooms that have poor acustics, so that normal conversation at the table was nearly impossible. Communicating with the wait staff was a shouting match. Barbecue sandwiches were dry and served on too large buns. Pork chop was almost all bone. Clam Chowder was missing clams and had an overpowering bacon taste. Side of mustard cole slaw was awful tasting. Usually try to be positive about something, but this was truly a poor dining experience - - avoid.

Food and service were very good. However, when we arrived we were told that they did not have our reservation and it would be a 45 minute wait. They eventually found it after we produced our hard copy confirmation, but then we were told it was a 10-15 minute wait. After we waited for about 15 minutes, another party (of 6)came in and was told they also had a 10-15 minute wait. They complained to the manager, and despite the fact they came in later and their full party was not yet there, they were seated 5 minutes before us.I found this portion of the experience greatly disappointing, especially considering Zingermans book on how to treat your customers like royalty. In this capacity, we were treated like unappreciated commoners on Mothers Day.

I have been asking for three years...they really should have selections of chicken (apple) sausage or turkey sausage available for non-red-meat eaters. A tasty turkey hash would be great. Having an Eggs Benedict dish that replaces Canadian bacon with crab on the menu would be awesome, too.

we had the best service ever -- hand watered by Ari -- who made my sister the happiest woman of the evening. We ended up buying his service book and his food book and my sister was so happy she accidentally shoplifted another cookbook (don't worry, I returned it the next day!) Bob the waiter was outstanding. The best waiter -- on top of a huge section, great suggestions, and the wine Bob, that wine! completely memorable as an eventful meal and experience that has me still smiling 2 days later. was not overly fond of the polenta, but it didn't even matter but everything else, especially oysters and mushrooms were fantastic.

Had I not had a gift certificate I may have left w/o paying the bill. $24 for half a dozen oysters is ridiculous...The Chop House is cheaper and that's saying something. Prices were inflated to go hand in hand with what one would expect from Zingerman's deli in Kerrytown and the food was about on par w/ the run of the mill barbaque joint.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2008
    Dined on 5/2/2008
The food was in my opinion substandard both in quantity and quality and given that the prices were higher than average this was a poor experience. The service personnel did go out of their way to try to make things right (removed two entrees from my bill). Unfortunately, the evening was already spoiled. When you get poor food and have to request a different item you tend to loose your appetite. The replacement entrees took too long to prepare so the rest of our party of six had to wait while we dined on our delinquent dinners. I will not return. A few minutes before our group left for Zingerman's, I learned that we were 8 instead of 7, and called that in. They accomodated us without fuss, and our table was ready when we got there 2 minutes early. Vegans and health-concious folks were glad that there were lunch offerings (black bean hominy burger, garden salad), though they were relatively few and scarce. Staff weren't fully informed of the state of construction on N Maple St when they gave us directions--I'm not at all sure how they could have been, nor whose responsibility that would be. Fortunately, they gladly incorporated our findings into their subsequent dealings with other customers.

The food is always delicious. The service tends to be erratic. Servers range from overly friendly and enthusiastic to inattentive; there's so much turnover that guests often have to train the waiter in the menu and the way the kitchen can do things, rather than the other way around. Likewise, there seems to be a disconnect sometimes between the hosts and the reservations: this time out, I was running late and called ahead to ask that my guest be told I would be a little late. She said she sat there and no one let her know. Other times, I've asked for a specific table, only to find it was given away to the previous group; no one checked the reservation to see that I asked for it.

Unique restaurant associated with Zingerman's Deli, a well known institution. Owners were Food & Wine restauranteurs of the year. Develop their own sources from all over the country, including legacy farms and purveyors of unique ingrediants. One of the best stocked bars around, with a remarkably knowledgeable beverage manager. They have unique relationships with vineyards and offer a spectacular range of wines and specialty cocktails, many from vintage recipes and with classic presentation. Would recommend highly to all who love truly great food in a comfortable and entertaining environment with absolutely no snobbery or air of superiority/elitism. They offer regular planned sittings of interest, educational and dining value too.

Other than the table seated next to us (verrry loud & we could've asked our server to be moved if we were really annoyed), everything else was stellar, and I don't use that tem lightly. Zingerman's is a class act all the way, from the quality of food to the quality of service. Ari came out and introduced himself (and his salt and pepper shaker collection!) after pouring water for one of the tables. What could be better than that? We will be back. Despite having reservations, the hostess said it would be another 20-30 minutes and we ended up waiting 45 minutes to get seated. While we waited, we ordered a round of drinks and stood in the bar area. The bar area was really crowded and we felt like we were in the way for the servers and hostesses. After being seated, our table was near the bar so it was extremely noisy. Our server forgot our appetizer and didn't compensate by buying us a drink or dessert. We also waited 40 minutes for our entrees. The food was good but NOT worth the price. I had a special--4 scallops, greens, and "chips" for $29! For that price I'd rather sit in Ann Arbor's Eve, West End Grill, or Earle Uptown, and have better food, ambiance, service and no noise.
