  • Too loud

    Dined on 6/10/2011
I would not go back to Fiola's. After all the hype, I felt the food was good (but not superb) and it was overpriced for the portion sizes. They need to add a pre-theater menu which all the restaurants in Penn Quarter now have. I also thought the acoustics were deplorable in that it was so noisey, it was impossible to have a conversation at a normal tone. Under your "noise" meter, I suggest adding another level beyond "energetic" which is "annoyingly loud". That's the rating I'd give Fiola's. While spending a fortune on the new decor, they should have included some sound absorbing elements. And what's with their not having a functional website?

The service seemed harried, maybe even distracted. They seemed to be out of most beverages we wanted - what, no Pinot Grigio??? They set 4 places at a round table but only set the place settings on the booth side of the round table so we would have been seated in a semicircle making conversation possible between the two middle people not allowing the two end people to converse with anyone but the person sitting next to him/her. We opted for a seat in the bar. Perhaps that is why the service was spotty. Although I made it clear when making reservations that we were celebrating 2 birthdays, no acknowledgement was made. A simple Happy Birthday would have sufficed.

The three course light menu was fine value for delicious food. I really enjoyed the peach gazpacho. The lemon gelato is worth the trip alone.....so creamy and tart at once. I am looking for the next excuse to return. It was very hard to decide what to order because so many things sounded appealing. I'm returning as soon as possible.

Welcome back to DC Fabio!!!!! This is a departure from his previous two restaurants but well worth the visit, fresh, innovative, creative takes from his home region of Italy. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu and make sure to leave a little room for a gelatto light, extracted and a perfect summer finish. Also and about time an excellent by the glass wine list with a number of choices that are reasonably priced and good, things you will not find elsewhere that compliment the food, or just a nice afternoon.

Would absolutely recommend it to my foodie friends. We had a fantastic dining experience there this past Monday, when we celebrated our 2nd anniversary. Our very well-paced 2-hour meal was a real treat from beginning to end. We had the eggplant appetizer special, and the artichoke salad for starters, and the seafood stew (il brodetto) and pork/mushroom/etc. ragu special for main courses, and it was all delicious.

Fiola is a superb restaurant in every respect. It is great to have Chef Fabio Trabocchi back in D. C. He is in his element with his Italian menu. Every dish we have eaten there is cooked to perfection from the freshest ingredients. There is an excellent selection of wines from Italy. The service always has been impeccable. The decor reminds one of a Tuscan villa.

Fabio Trabocci's Fiola has been well worth the wait! The King of Italian is finally back in Washington doing all of those spectacular things that put past ventures on the map. As most know he is formerly of the famed Maestro, the spawning ground for a multitude of new young chefs. Now he is back and Washington is a better place. Not only is the food elegantly cooked to perfection it is remarkably prepared as only the unique and creative Fabio can do it! He is truly a mastermind of culinary skills unsurpassed by anyone in Washington, his sophisticated creations work every time. It is amazing how perfectly a bass can be prepared and how hypnotically delicious a pasta creation can taste! Fabio is the Maestro in every sense of the word.

Arrived at 7:45 p.m. for 8:00 dinner reservation. Seated at 8:48 p.m., well after one couple who arrived after us and didn't have reservations. At no point did any of the three hostesses working that night check in, apologize or offer any explanation. Nor did we receive any appetizers (whether free or otherwise) during the wait. Our first order arrived at 9:30 p.m. Food was pretty good, so in summary, if you want good Italian food at Fiola, plan to wait at the bar for an hour and then plan for another 45 minutes from seating until receipt of your appetizer. I suggest making your reservation a good 90 minutes prior to when you expect to be hungry.

Fiola is beautiful and provides very comfortable surroundings for a meal. The hostess balked when I requested to be seated at a table at the end of the row instead of second from the end. Not a good start. Our server was knowledgable and very pleasant, providing good, detailed information about the food. The chilled asparagus soup is excellent! Bring me more! The special snapper with sauce was good, not great. The gelatos were excellent. Our server brought us - gratis - a new nutella gelato that the pastry chef created. The others were far better. The waits between courses were a bit too long, especially at lunchtime when we had to get back to work. More vegatarian dishes on the menu would also be a plus. We'll be back at Fiola!

I was impressed with how Fabio has converted this French location into an open, cheerful, modern rustic, vibrant place for DC foodies. Dining at Fiola is a gastronomic experience that brings one to Le Marche in its rawness. The decor along with the down to earth yet elegant culinary creations, with freshness and bold taste, make every meal diary worthy. The reduction or simply sauce for each dish is unique and tasteful that brings out the sweetness of the super sweet cherry tomatoes, or the biting texture of the slightly curvy spaghettini. I simply enjoy the friendly service and homey feeling that Fabio is sharing with us.

I already knew we were going to have a great meal when we sat down and were given a warm, buttery housemade focaccia roll with a side of seasoned salt and fresh virgin olive oil. We then enjoyed a double order of the mozzarella and squash blossom fritters which were tempura light and flawless in texture. Entree options were impressive with all kinds of meat, fish and fowl options. I chose one of the fresh pastas and was not disappointed. For dessert, the fennel sorbet over the olive oil cake is refreshing and fun but opt for the Nutella sorbet instead, I ended up eating most of my dining companion's dessert!

This was a first-rate experience. The service was perfect and food came out at the proper pace. The sommelier suggested an Umbrian wine that was excellent and comparatively inexpensive. The food was excellent. It can be a little noisy, but it was not to the point of not being able to hear or comfortably conduct a conversation. For those who know and like Fabio Trabocchi, formerly of Maestro fame before heading to NYC, his characteristic high quality is on full display. Whereas at Maestro the production was high art with complex and inventive cuisine and an extensive high-end wine list, here it is at a lesser degree of complexity and lower, more sustainable price point, but highly satisfying nonetheless. A great experience.
