Since I was recovering from surgery my decision was to not try to shop or cook for Christmas....so I made Il Porto reservation. Neighbors who were in town were invited and all were happy with the meal, the atmosphere, and the decision. My parents have never gone out for Christmas dinner so this was a first for them and thankfully it was a good decision and a memorable Christmas dinn

  • Don't have a "Chef's Special"!

I've had several delicious dinners here so chose it as the place to take family for Christmas dinner. Service was great but the kitchen was my problem. We had 3 appetizers: 2 traditional antipasti and 1 broiled Portobello mushroom cap. Salads had to be served until the appetizers were ready. When they arrived the antipasti were great. The mushroom was in edible. My guests' Italian Sausage was excellent. I had the "Chef's Special" of stuffed chicken breast with risotto and julienned fresh vegetables. My order had no taste at all and the risotto was barely cooked. Money was wasted on the "Special". Il Porto's ambience and menu choices are reasons to go here, but I'll only order from the menu now.

Perhaps because of the crowd on Christmas afternoon, the tables were packed close together. the tables were small and the chairs uncomfortable. The bread and salad were good but the escargot and veal saltimbocca were very poor. They lacked seasoning and were tasteless. They need a chef or a "cook" who knows how to cook. We probably will not return.

Once a year on Christmas Day Il Porto offers a very special meal, it is a chicken dish stuffed with shrimp and lobster. Believe me, it is outstanding. We make sure we have a meal on Christmas to partake in this special meal. Be sure to make reservations next Christmas. You will not be disappointed. Once again the food and service were outstanding.

Every Christmas my husband enjoy walking at night through Old Town Alexandria and stopping off for a romantic dinner at Il Porto. We have never been disappointed. The ambience and the service are always top notch. Some years ago I had the manicotti and it was the best I ever tasted. This year I had seafood over pasta with white sauce - and the sauce was superb - especially with a nice bottle of Chianti. Dining at Il Porto is always a special treat.

Friday nite and the place was almost empty. Took our party of 3 to the worst table in the place. Next to the kitchen. Back door must've been open. Cold draft and had the step railing poking into my back. Wait staff very good. Food a little on the salty side. Make great cocktails. I will go back but will be more assertive about my seating assignment. No other parties come in before we left.

A solid, good restaurant in Old Town--our party of 6 enjoyed all the meals -- the raviolini w/beef was excellent and the red sauce very flavorful. The restaurant also serves whole wheat spaghetti -- you just need to ask for it. All entrees came with a dinner salad -- it was OK…too much salad dressing. I would recommend ordering the salad dressing on the side.

It was VERY expensive for what you're getting. A friend and I went for a nice Italian meal. We were sat at a tiny wobbly table against a wall. We looked around to see if we could be moved to another table, but all of the tables appeared the same. The prices were very high for what we got. I got a chicken marsala dish, which was tasty, but very small and still expensive. My friend got the chicken Parmesan. It did not come with pasta, and they charged for $4 for a small side of spaghetti. The bread was tasty, but all in all it was a little over budget for what we received.

We were part of a group that attended the November AMA meeting at the Gaylord in Fort Washington, MD. We could not find a place to eat onsite with a large group and decided to take a river taxi to Alexandria. Glad we did and based on staff recommendations went to Il Porto and everything was at the least very good. From service, food, ambiance and hospitality, the staff meet and in some cases exceeded our expectations.

I have eaten in this restaurant before. Service is less than expected. It's a tiny tiny place. I ask for a larger table on the reservation, still was seated at the tiny table. Tables so small and so close together that your chairs touch. I thought it would be a good change however I learned my lesson. I wouldn't recommend or visit myself again. The tourist attitude of the staff and over charging for plain basic Italian dishes that lack flavor. I'm surprised it's an open table offering. Goes to show money can buy you placement.

It wasn't crowded at all on a Tuesday night, which was nice, so we didn't feel rushed. We were in D.C. for the Marine Corps Marathon and were looking for a unique Italian restaurant for a Pasta dinner. Wanting to stick to Old Town, I found this quaint restaurant. The food was nothing otherworldly, but it was decent enough. My cream sauce on my chicken was excellent, however some of the seafood platters from my friends were a little bland. One of our friends sent his veal back, however everybody was satisfied in the end. I thought it was a bit overpriced, but the location and the atmosphere can't be beat, so i can adapt. The wait staff was amazing. I felt like we had 3 waiters helping us complete with gracious attitudes. I would highly recommend if you're looking for good food and a great location close to Old Town's charms.

Went here for my birthday dinner with friends. We were seated right away. The food was just okay. I've had better Italian food from chain restaurants. A little overpriced for the portion size. Did not particularly care for the atmosphere. It just wasn't my type of spot. Many of my friends were charged $7-$8 over the cost of what was given on the receipts. Still contacting the restaurant to figure out the problem here.

We hadn't been to Il Porto in a few years and decided to go back to celebrate a birthday. Made reservations a week in advance. Arrived to find the restaurant packed (good for them) and were seated in the upstairs dining room. Unfortunately, we were seated in an overcrowded space with no room to move and where I had to lean out of the waiter's way every time they came into our area. Also not great was the very large party celebrating some occasion. We got to watch their baby video, hear speeches and applause. Very hard to hear our own conversation. Food was tasty if a bit long in coming.
