The flavors were outstanding across each of the 6 plates we tried. My wife, who fancies herself a French fry connoisseur rated the Za’atar spiced French fries as some of the best she’s ever had. I immediately fell for the Muhammara Dip (walnut, pomegranate molasses, extra virgin olive oil) served with our flatbread. It also went really well with the fries. The Kibbeh meat balls were a revelation of how well lamb, pureed dates, and an eggplant relish could work so well together. It was my wife's birthday, and they treated us to a free dessert, which we (wisely) used to select the donuts with acacia honey. (Perhaps if it were my birthday, I would have gone for the chocolate pudding.)

Everything was over-the-top delicious. If you are a fan of Tilth, and you appreciate sustainably-sourced food prepared with excellence (and spending a little extra for it), you will love Golden Beetle. Thanks Maria and staff for another wonderful treasure in Ballard!

WE had a lovely time at the Golden Beetle. The food was interesting and varied. Some of the flavors were a little subdued and subtle but interesting. The amuse bouche had the most aggressive flavor and might explain why we felt the food that followed was much more subdued. We also felt that the service for you tasting menu was a little quick.

We shared both tasting menus sans wine selection, hoping to get the full picture of the food. We were surprised by the lack of olives overall, but olive oil is bursting from the croutons in the carrot soup. Loved the muhammara and made use of the three or four slices of tiny "perfect" pita. The rabbit pie with currant sauce was tasty, but the spanakoptia was just that. Overall, the food was good, but did not make an earth shattering impression on us. It truly may have gone better with the wine.

The food is superb! Every dish we ordered was a winner, from the pure simplicity of the carrot soup to the amazing juxtaposition of sweet and savory in the goat confit pizza, to the incredible delicacy of the spinach cigars. The menu features a tremendous assortment of unusual items - the only problem is in deciding what to order. Our waiter, Aaron, was very knowledgable about the food, the wine, and the specialty cocktails. We stumbled upon the restaurant in the Open Table listings, but it's now going on our list of favorites. We would highly recommend the Golden Beetle - especially to foodies!

We love Tilth, so it was a goal to try out Golden Beetle as soon as possible. The inspiration for this restaurant is North African street food, and I wasn't sure what to expect. There were some familiar items (hummus, tzatziki, and others) and some that I hadn't seen before (rabbit kidney). It's kind of a small plate place, although there are large plates too. We mixed it up. Oh man... the chicken pie was so good. The only disappointment was the bag of donuts for dessert. The first time I saw this was at Tom Douglas restaurants (he was in GB the night we were there) and I'm pretty sure he was 'inspired' by the donut stand in Pike Place Market. These donuts looked great, but had a very flat flavor and the honey dipping sauce was thin.

We started at the bar having some great cocktails and a fascinating conversation with the mixologist about his art and decided to stay at the bar for dinner. The cocktails poured with house made bitter were excellent. The muhammara dip (walnut, pomegranate molasses, extra virgin olive oil), kale, and rabbit meat pies were all very good with the cod falafel as a standout. Service was personal and timely. We will definitely be back. Relaxed fine dining in Ballard. Excellent.

Great Mediterranean food with a spicy kick. It was a 9:00 meal on a Friday night so the crowd was loud and the room was dimmed. My husband and I arrived after having a snack so the portions were good for two. Tried the pita bread with the Muhammara dip (yum!), Cous Cous, Kibbeh Meat Balls, and Skagit River Chicken Pie (very rich mushrooms). We were full by the time we got half way through the chicken pie. Not all dishes arrived at once, so it was a nice service pace. With two glasses of wine it came to about $40 each.

Fantastic new addition to the restaurant scene in Seattle- Ballard becoming quite the hot spot for new places. A long drive( 45 min due to traffice) from Bellevue but worth it. Iron Chef winner Maria has done a great job of creating a wide array of palatible plates-all reasonably prices. Only issue we had was that we felt rushed-all the small plates we ordered came at the same time-made small table feel very crowded. Wine list also a little thin-but will definitely return to sample some of their other offerings

Very tasty, Mediterranean-themed food. The rabbit pastries were amazing. The feel of the restaurant is casual and lively, and the quality of the food and service were above par. Though the restaurant had only been opened for a couple of weeks, the execution was good. The small plates theme is great -- we tried many dishes and most were hits. Even the misses were still good. (cumin vinaigrette just needed more acid). Prices were more than fair for the quality. They have a very interesting cocktail list, many included some home-made ingredients. Only down-side -- the tables are too close together. Not a fatal flaw. A fun and different vibe from Tilth, another restaurant I love from the same owner. I'll definitely be back.

This place is amazing- as expected, Maria Tilth does not dissapoint. The flat bread with hummus and dips started out meal off with a bang. I had the tuna dish (with the cucumber, some delish sauce and a nut rice pilaf) and WOW was it delicious - super fresh and cooked perfectly. Everything on the menu looked amazing though- next time, I'll do an assortment of smaller plates. The Turkish Chewy ice cream with figs- unbelievable. We all agreed we'll be back again and again.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2007

They are still working out the kinks since just opening, but the food was generally really good. The kinks were: the fries tasted good, but they were cut into tiny bits instead of true fries, which would have been easier for dipping and eating; the connection between kitchen and waitstaff was murky since our salad and protein arrived nearly 45 minutes after our pita and fries. When our waitress approached asking if we'd like dessert menus we had to inform her that we were missing two dishes. They did take the two late dishes and our glass of wine off the bill to make up for it. Overall, the staff was very apologetic and attentive otherwise and we enjoyed our food. We will go back in a while after they smooth things out.

Thank you for opening such a fantastic restaurant! This space has been empty for a while, and we are so excited to dine here. Mediterranean street food is the theme, with Chef Maria Hines' style. We LOVED the dips and sauces with homemade pita to start while we were making our selections. The 5-course tasting menu (both meat and VEG) $50 is a great choice if all at the table are going to order the tasting menus. The smoked harissa chicken wings are spicy, finger licking good. Go now!

Very reasonable wine list, lots of small plates/appetizers so best if you're in the mood for those. I definitely recommend the rabbit pies. I also think the happy hour menu looks great and can't wait to try a cocktail next time. We were there on opening night and they already seemed to have things very much under control and the service was great.

Great place for a special evening (try the tasting menus) or a casual meal in the bar (lots of small bites and wood-fired-oven pizza). As at Maria's other restaurant, Tilth, there are plenty of vegetarian items on the menu in addition to the meaty fare. The cocktails are superb, the service is charming, and the food is fantastic - Golden Beetle is a winner on all counts.
