Pre-dinner cocktail at the bar: Interesting sig. drinks, but the bartender was skilled at mixing our special resquests. Dinner: We sat in the upstairs dining area with overlook into the lower dining and bar area. Great for conversaion, lively but not noisy. One vegan and three carnivors all found our perfect entree on the menu. All meals were exceptional! Dessert: Honolulu Hangover, Mocha Trio, Black and Tan all winners! Perfect ending to a perfect meal. For being open for only one month, Bluestem has found their groove with friendly, knowledgable staff and exceptional food that did not break the bank.

We've been wanting to try Bluestem since it openeded and were not disappointed. From the moment that we walked in, the staff was friendly and accomodating and the food was really exceptional from appetizers to dessert. We were only going to eat a couple bites of the dessert, because we were already full, but it was so good, we ate the whole thing. With such a developed restaurant scene, every SF restaurant tries to stand apart from its competitors and Bluestem has done it...from the cool flooring to the back-lit bar, friendly staff and a great menu, we will definitely be back!

Had a decent experience, loving decor, service needs a little buffer, entree portions are small. However, I had to send my roasted chicken back because it was uncooked! All the server did was oh sorry about that? Shouldn't they offer me free fries?or dessert?

We very much enjoyed the food - great filet and duck confit - but the service was really off. Hopefully that is due to growing pains and will improve in time. We waited an inordinately long time for our order to be taken and then again for our entrees. And the waiter's attitude left something to be desired. I would return for the food.

Nice addition to this stretch of Market St. Seems like the restaurant is still getting the kinks out. Some waiters, including ours, use some sort of hand held electronic device to take orders and seemed to still be getting used to them - our waiter seemed more focused on his device than us when taking our order. Some of the tables feel crammed together with very little space for waiters to pass by. Overall, though, an interesting menu and our food was very good.

As soon as I entered, I realized it was a kind of cheesy place. I asked for a nice Pinot Noir. It came out of the refrigerator. I do like my wine at cool room temperature but not at 40 degrees. I immediately decided that the food will be equally mishandled. The waiters seemed hesitant and unsure of what to do. I ended up going somewhere else for dinner. Sorry!

Our party celebrated a birthday. We shared the mussels and sides of grits and green beans along with our entrees. Friday's plat du jour was jambalaya and the guest who had that said it was wonderful, it had nice big pieces of sausage and shrimp over rice, a bit of kick, not too spicy. The vegetarian dish with the garbanzo panisse, almost wafery, over stacked vegetables had a mild Mediterranean flavor. The cavatelli pasta with rabbit ragu was also delicious, would have liked more rabbit. Bluestem presented the birthday girl a special grilled peach tart and ice cream, with a candle even. The rest of us swooned over the Hawaiian Hangover rum soaked chocolate and coconut cake. One of us did feel a little swoony and all of us were very happy.

Outstanding and friendly bistro with excellent well prepared food. The menu was thoughtful and struck a good balance between haute bar food (think gastro pub) and high end fine dining. It's a hard line to tow. The trio of apple fed pork was excellent and consistent with Bluestem's effort to showcases sustainably produced meats from highly regarded purveyors, with an emphasis on whole-animal utilization. Certainly worth a visit.

A handsome, open space through whose windows one can see the hustle and bustle of Market Street. A short but interesting menu. We had the marrow bone with onion marmalade and thought it delightful. The steak frites was what would find at any small-town French brasserie - carefully done and served with a fine beurre manie. Next time I will order the steak medium rare rather than rare. My wife had a good though not extraordinary hamburger, and the coffee was just fine if a bit on the cool side. Friendly service; the maitre d' was perhaps just a tad too friendly. Some day when it it warmer, I want to sit on the outdoor 2nd-floor balcony! One can't beat the location, adjacent to countless museums and other facilities.

What a gift to the mid-Market part of the City to now have a restaurant of this quality and design. Parking is easy (5th and Mission garage)so even people who don't office downtown can find it easy to get to. Excellent food. I was first drawn to the house-made charcuterie and meat dishes on the menu, however the seafood proved to be equally enticing. My whole roasted dorado was perfect and my husband's apple-fed pork turned out to be 3 cuts which were all delicious. The variety on the menu makes it perfect for groups - somthing for everyone! I "checked" notable wine list primarily for their list of wines "on tap." It gives you a good variety of options by the glass, 1/2 liter or liter. I very much appreciate the option of a 1/2 liter of wine. The location was also ideal. We had theatre tickets, but didn't want to eat in the usual Union Square tourist spots. Bluestem fit all our requirements perfectly.

Considering they had been open for only a week or so, we were very impressed. The menu is extensive and the food was excellent. Try the arugula salad with stonefruit,Pt. Reyes blue cheese and pumpkin oil dressing, very light and refreshing. Also tried the salmon and the pork dish (cut varies with the day) and both were very good with a nice layering of flavors in their respective toppings. For dessert don't miss the chocolate cake with marshmallow and cocoanut frosting, yum. Staff could use more experience, helpful but green.

We tried this place only days after it open, the food was very good. Charcuterie by far a definite must try. The service was attentive but leaning towards amateurish, our waiter was very friendly, but his interaction and continuing conversation into topics that perhaps should happen between friends and not between guest/server interaction made for some pretty awkward dinning moments. Sometimes its better to just give a smile and stick to simple interaction, e.g. Have you had time to look at the menu, do you have any questions, what would you like to order ... for example. So even with the strange service i would come back. Just not for any type of special occasion, for now. The staff needs to be broken in.
