I wasn't sure what to expect from Bluestem based on the website which is too playful for a restaurant that takes food and drink as seriously as it does. The drinks are inexpensive, unique and strong. The wines, both by the glass and bottle, are interesting, hit the mark and affordable. The food didn't disappoint either. Great range, flavors and nicely portioned. Do not miss the bone marrow or watermelon salad. The service was a mixed bag. Not all the bartenders were friendly and the waiter was uneven and wasn't knowledgeable about much of the food or wine. We sat up on the balcony which I generally hate because I feel removed from the main dining room but I quite liked it in this instance. There is also a great outdoor space.

Overall, the food was very good. The bone marrow appetizer and profitteroles dessert were excellent. However, I was disappointed with the filet. It was tough and stringy, not the kind of meat that I expected a filet to be cut from. It was more of a cut from a New York steak. The lamb lunch was very good.

Although Blue Stem is very new, it has the potential to be a foodie hot spot. The menu was enticing. I ordered the Branzino, which prepared perfectly (sautéed). The seasoning was just enough to enhance the dish but keep the integrity of the fresh flavor of this delightful Mediterranean sea bass. OK, one word about the desserts: FINALLY a variety for all palettes AND after tasting five different desserts (my own and of course from the plates of my friends; hey, what are friends for, right?) each delight delivered. I would say a couple words about the bread: it was OK. The quality of the bread seemed out of place. It was dry and cold and the butter was very cold and hard to spread.

Had lunch with a girlfriend and we thoroughly enjoyed it from the welcoming greeting at the door to the creative dishes, James Ormsby's amazing desserts, attentive but not obsequious service by Brian and a friendly goodbye. The chickpea cake Panisse was absolutely wonderful; the arugula salad with stone fruit was delicious and the corn and fava succotash creative and flavorful. Thankfully nothing was over salted and the portions sane. The Stop and Smell the Roses dessert was one of the best desserts I have had in a very long time. Can't wait to return!

Bluestem is just okay. I know it's new and they're still trying to work out the kinks, but we tried a range of things with a group, with the best dish being 'good enough' and the worst being fairly mediocre (not San Francisco quality). Our server was perfectly friendly, but I don't eat out for the service. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here in the future, and if I were in the area I would probably eat at Amber (which is next door) instead.

  • Bluestem Big Disappointment

Service is lousy as previously reported by others. To quote Tom Waites, "You can't find you waitress with a Geiger Counter". Was not that crowded at lunch, yet waits for menus, drinks, orders being taken, orders arriving, getting a check were ALL unbelievably slow. Waitress blamed slowness in kitchen getting orders cooked and plated. But, if so, that should be fixable after they have been open a month or more. And, that doesn't explain lack of server attentativenes. And, food was not great as other reviewers said it was mediocre after all the bad service. I had the worst duck confit I've ever had - not crisp, the fat not taken off in bottling or cooking, the flavor poor. My friend's hamburger was "fair", no better. I won't be back.

This was a great find on Market Street. The food was excellent and the ambiance was very cool and hip. The service however was lacking. The restaurant was not that busy and our waitress was not that attentive to our dining needs. I only ate half my meal and they forgot to bring my "doggie bag" to the table. Overall the service was very slow. We will plan on eating there again however, because the food was so good. We had the burgers which were delicious, the beef was really excellent and the salads were very fresh.

The Marrow bones! I can't say enough about the food - not fancy or overdone, just down home amazing food. (no "essences") I will say you sort of have to like meat - the marrow bones! - the steaks, the burgers, the pork trio, everything was top notch. And then, there are the desserts - nothing overblown or too heavy, but creative and wonderful - creme brulee with tapioca, chocolate 3 ways....service could be improved, not top notch yet, but honestly it only opened maybe 3 weeks ago. Cocktails were also amazing, btw. I should also mention that the prices were quite reasonable - not many entrees above $24. The menu is quite straightforward - flavors came through quite well. Also - did I say the marrow bones were amazing

Great place. A new favorite. I had a delicious steak with the blue cheese sauce and it was excellent and well cooked. Also, loved the side of mashed potatoes. I started with the Corn Chowder which was a little runny for my taste but the flavor was nice and crisp. The cocktails are great especially Honey Badger. The windows are floor to ceiling and look out of the Yerba Buena lane for great City people watching. Be careful on your table location, there is one table right by the door which we happened to get and that wasn't great. But, next time I may just hit the bar.

The restaurant has a great feel, especially on a sunny day. The service and food were very good, with a couple of hiccups. The soup was very salty and I have a very high salt tolerance. The chef needs to do more tasting of the food. The time between our main course and dessert was very long, about 35 minutes even though multiple people came up and asked about it. Ultimately we got it and it was just OK, though they comped it, which was the right thing to do. I think these are just "bugs" because it is so new. I definitely recommend it and would go back.

Nice addition to this stretch of Market St. Seems like the restaurant is still getting the kinks out. Some waiters, including ours, use some sort of hand held electronic device to take orders and seemed to still be getting used to them - our waiter seemed more focused on his device than us when taking our order. Some of the tables feel crammed together with very little space for waiters to pass by. Overall, though, an interesting menu and our food was very good.
