Wait staff was overly attentive. Asked to remove plates although we still had food on it. I got the impression that they needed the table and were trying to move us on. I did not like the rushed feeling.

The hostess was such a sweet lady. She welcomed us and gave us free fries since that was our first time there. I thought that was a sweet gesture.

  • We have been regular customers
    OpenTable Diner Since 2005VIP

We have been regular customers since the restaurant opened in our neighborhood and always brought out-of-town guests here. But this last time both the food and the service were very disappointing. We were seated in a cold, drafty, unappealing corner outside near large groups of loud, boisterous drinkers. We waited ages for our food, which was, at best, undistinguished. The new Assistant Manager comped us on a couple of dishes, but overall we were sorry we had come. I will think hard before coming back and probably make the trip across town to the Chez Panisse Cafe.

  • While the food and atmosphere

    Dined on 4/18/2008
While the food and atmosphere were both pleasing, it was the outstanding service that made dining at A Cote a real pleasure, particularly since it's a tapas menu, which required our server to bring several small courses throughout the evening. The stuffed pheasant and Crouque monsieur were my favorite tapas, and the lamb sausage pizza and cauliflower fritters were also excellent. The spinach and ricotta ravioli was only OK, and is not something I would order again.

  • For the second time, A Cote
    OpenTable Diner Since 2014
    Dined on 4/18/2008
For the second time, A Cote failed to share the information from Open Table with the hostess. She had no idea that we had a reservation. My guess is the problem results from Open Table reservations being on the office computer while the hostess works from a hand written pad. The problem was even more strange this time since I received an Open Table notice that the reservation that I had made wasn't made after all. When I called A Cote, I was told that they had received the reservation.

Food was good, but too heavy, too sauced. It's not nearly as good as wonderful Oliveto, Bay Wolf or even Rivoli. Thanks for asking. We wouldn't bother going back, with so many other wonderful places to choose from.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2008

I always love A Cote but the night I went the service was really what knocked my socks off. My dearest friend and I were sharing a last meal before she headed back home - I probably won't see her for another year. Our server and her assistants seemed to always be there when we needed them, and to disappear when we were deep in conversation. We never felt inconvenienced or interrupted. It certainly caused us to linger longer (and spend more $ on food and drink) because we knew we'd be so comfortable. Thanks! Katie Hines-Shah Berkeley CA

I like the fact that everything on the menu is in the "small plates" category. This means everyone can try a lot of dishes and that the final tab is reasonable. All the dishes we had were very good, especially the mussels and the cauliflower fritters. Nice atmosphere; not too formal. Our waitperson was helpful and friendly but didn't hover.

I called 30 min. before we arrived to ask if it would be OK if we arrived a little late. The hostess replied with a very arch,"And when does Madame intend to arrive?"I think it was an attempt at humor, but very off-putting. I almost hung up and canceled. I let the remark hang in the air a few seconds and then said,"15 minutes,"and I was assured it was fine. All went well, and on the way out my husband asked the chefs how a dish he enjoyed was prepared. The hostess swooshed by and said, "Now we can't give away all our secrets."She lingered, clearly trying to inhibit conversation, and when she finally left, a chef told us what to do. I've dined here a few times, but with an odd person like that, I wouldn't bring clients or have a special party.

I was taking my husband out for our 18th anniversary and let A'Cote know ahead of time that I wanted the quietest table. They gave us complimentary glasses of champagne and antipasta dish with our meals. When the time came to pay, they said it was on the house! Our jaws must have dropped to the floor. We could not believe it! Not only was the service superb, but the food was outstanding!

The mussels are still my favorite A Cote item! Our server was amazing... she was incredibly patient with me while I agonized over my wine choice.... all in all, one of the best service experiences I've ever had! (and I can be quite critical of even mediocre service) We actually ordered too much food thinking that plates would be small but I ended up taking home the leftover mussels (which were just as good for lunch the next day!) and the entire fish entree which was also delicious. I'll definitely be back for more mussels!

This is my absolute favorite restaurant in Northern California! The only downside is that they don't take reservations, and sometimes it gets so crowded that it takes what seems like forever to get a table! But once seated and served, all troubles are forgotten. Of course, the food and assortment of wines and spirits are absolutely wonderful. The best! The best mojito I've ever had! :-)
