Even for those of us who are not Scots, this was like having a Mom's homecooked meal. The food is DELICIOUS. We tried the haggis -- had to at least once. Everything -- even the pickled fennel, carrots, etc. that they served with the bread was yummy.

Awesome service and food. The wait was kind of long but the place is smaller in size, so it is understandable and the owner/hostess made a point to check in with us frequently which was really nice. I had the fish supper which was honestly the best fish and chips i've had in a long time. I know the menu changes periodically so we are excited to go back...we had a lot of fun at this place!

  • After a slow start -- interesting
    OpenTable Diner Since 2008
    Dined on 10/28/2011
After a slow start -- interesting oat cakes were delivered immediately but water and the chance to order drinks didn't show up for a while, the food was generally good. Mussels were very nicely prepared in ale but a vegetarian plate featuring three different vegetables relied too much on butter to assure flavor. It should have been a light meal, but wasn't. This is clearly a place for ale -- wines were uninteresting and my white was served in a just washed, and therefore hot, juice glass.

We missed our original time so when we arrived there was an hour wait. The host and hostess we kind enough to find us a spot within 15 mins. though. That was great because the place was small and cozy. I had to do the when in Rome thing and tried the Haggis. It was tasty! I also had the duck confit salad and my g/f had a lamb pot pie. The food impressed and the atmosphere was what you would expect from a neighborhood gem. We sat right by there crock of mulled wine so the smells were fabulous too.

Don't just walk to this Scottish Gastro Pub.....RUN! And when you get there for Brunch don't leave without having the Fishcakes. Chock full of thick chunks of locally smoked haddock and salmon, with poached eggs and a spicy hollandaise on top. The homemade oatcakes are a nice touch instead of bread, we asked for extra and they were happy to oblige. They even make their own Ketchup! We will definitely return here soon but next time for dinner.

Excellent food. Authentic Scotch. Even side dishes made to perfection. Could be anywhere in the Highlands... Not having scotch whiskey to serve with the food and not allowing to bring scotch rends the meal incomplete and frustrating. Service was poor. Waitress was not aware of the basic composition of the dishes and could not answer any question related to the meal. She never stopped chewing gum with an open mouth...

This was our second visit to The Haven. It is eclectic and the food very good with a great beer selection. This time we selected "The Chef's Whim" (must be ordered by all at the table). It was a Sunday night and three of us ordered the meat option (which was absent of greens) and I got the vegetarian option. All of our four courses were tasty and it was fun to be surprised, but next time we'll order what we want. Service a bit slow but gracious and accomodating.

Had a wonderful experience going to The Haven with a large party. They were incredibly accommodating from the beginning, with friendly and attentive service that included all kinds of little extra tastings, like oat cakes and house-made pickles. The food was delicious. Between the 7 of us we tried much of the menu, from the most traditional to more common restaurant standards, and all were quite good.

It's a scottish place. Try the haggis. Seriously. What have you got to lose? Okay, $9 if you don't like it. But, IMHO, you'll like it. We went with a party of six, and were all happy, and, yeah, that don't happen that often, as this group is fussy and sometimes unadventurous, except for me, of course. The selection of scottish ales is outstanding, and they go to special lengths to make it all authentic. We were actually attended by the owner, which, what can I say, is the way it should be.

The food was amazing. I have been to the Haven several times, and I will continue to go back. The menu changes often, but there are some very good items that remain year round. The fish supper is great, and it comes with a good fish portion and a very large chip portion. The minted mushy peas are a must try as well. My dinner companion had the burger and said it was the best burger he's had in the 7 years he's lived in Boston. I had the barley risotto, and I will crave it until I go back and have it again. (It might be a seasonal item, though.) Overall, everyone was very happy with their meal.

My Scottish Husband and I made a special trip to visit The Haven, and it did not disappoint. Everything from the ambiance to the service, to the food and drink were absolutely impeccable! The Haggis and Neeps were outstanding, the fish and chips were fantastic, a delicious fish that was flavorful and not the least bit greasy, the Haven Burger was off the hook, definitely the Best Burger in and around town and blows away the Kobe burgers we usually get elsewhere!! Jason the owner and even Chef Wax came out and introduced themselves...our server Leandra was charming and knowledgeable, and even suggested a delicious chocolate cake with curry coconut ice cream for dessert that was to die for! Amazing experience. My mother in-law is from Scotland and we took her to the Haven for her birthday as a surprise. When she walked in she was greeted by the Scottish owner and the unique decor of the restaurant. The beer selection was outstanding and the All Scottish menu was beyond our expectations. We could not have had a better meal, better service or better night. My husband even put on his kilt and got a free deep fried mars bar which we all shared! Absolutely flawless night. My partner and I were here for lunch on a Monday. A friend had recommended it, and we are very happy she did! We were a little hesitant because of the very limited lunch menu (a few salads and sandwiches), but it turns out the limited menu has resulted in them doing it all very well. The coffee was rich and strong, the service outstanding. We shared the Field Shoot Salad, which was perfectly dressed. The oat cakes were close to perfection. My partner ordered the Haven Burger, which he deemed to be "the best burger I have had in my entire life." I ordered the Haven Veggie Burger, which was also very, very good, albeit a little unappetizing to look at. A definite five star!

We were underwhelmed by the food. My wine was warm. And when I made an Open Table reservation, I specified that it was was husband's birthday so I wanted a candle for his dessert. No candle appeared, no mention of his occasion. Either the restaurant dropped the ball, or Open Table did. (And, btw, I initially called the restaurant to make a reservation, but whoever answered the phone wasn't interested in helping me and told me to do it through Open Table.) Our waitress was very nice, a good waitress, but I'm rating service just "fair" because of the birthday glitch.

Went to Haven with total 4 adults and 3 kids (10, 8, and 5). Food was great but service mediocre - bartender was waiting on the entire place - it was a Sun night but there were still a couple of tables and one other big party. They also do not know how to deal with kids - the kids' meals did not come out until the adults' entrees did and the adults had apps. That meant for cranky and hungry kids w/o crayons or paper. I can understand you might not have a kids' menu but at least put their food orders in as soon as you get them - we didn't think we had to specify. At least refill the oatcakes. It was hard to flag the waiter/bartender down. Still food was wonderful and one friend thought fish and chips were better than those in London

I suspected this place would be good, but my guest and I were blown away, and she in particular has been to the best Boston has to offer. The haven begins with traditional Scottish fare, and complements with what I would call original 21st spicing. How else might you describe truffle-honey-mashed rutabaga. The menu is small, carefully composed, yet covers pork, lamb, beef, chicken dishes. Vegetarians are not left to the sides, though one can a have vegeatarain meal based only on the sides. Artisinal ales top the list of alcoholic beverages. They off several locally made honey meads, one which is a fascinating semi-sweet black currant mead. Sorry, I didn't try the wines, but the small list suggests a thoughtful selection. Pub atmosphere.
