I've been eating sushi in many places: from New York to Tokyo. Kiji is the best among all. I've been there many times (~50 times), and each time it was better than before. If you like sushi and if you are in San Francisco - that's the place to go.

wasn't super happy with the service, which was a mash-up of 4 or 5 different people at any one time, which allowed for a lot of service errors. the sushi was overall JUST okay, and when ordering alcoholic beverages, the staff seemed to be astonished we would want and ENTIRE bottle for a table of 6. a little disappointing considering the price/location.

My favorite sushi place in SF - and I take my sushi seriously. Super fresh fish, many selections flown in from Japan. Great preparation - fun to sit at the bar and watch the chef prepare his deliciousnesses... The "spoon" is a must - uni, ikura, quail egg with a bit of ponzu. Don't get me started.. I go there at lest 2-3x per month. Service is also great!

I love this place. It has a couple of quiet back rooms for groups and more private dining. Sushi bar is comfortable. Fish is fresh (had the best albacore sashimi here), rolls are interesting, and a huge sake selection. No techno music, just quiet, sophisticated jazz. This is now my go-to sushi restaurant.

Fun experience, and a good date place! The menu was creative, and a little more varied than your typical sushi place. Plenty of options for vegetarians such as myself. The sake menu was good, and with the half carafes, very reasonable! And we had the cutest, most enthusiastic waitress (should have gotten her name!). Will definitely be back.

  • Food was ok but service was subpar

They refused to honor the points even we were there for like 3 hours and continuous ordering of both food and drinks. I did mention OpenTable when I arrived. Food overall was just okay, good if you are in the neighborhood and must have to have sushi for dinner, but there's nothing to write home about. It's pricey for what it was. Service was better when we first arrived when there were only 4 customers. Was hard to get their attention after 8:30pm when the place got busy.

Disappointing. I placed my order for the Omakase (Chef's choice tasting menu) several weeks in advance. Of all the the omakases I have had, Morimoto's in Napa was by far the best and this was the worst. The offering was nothing unsual and mostly sushi. I could have saved a 3 hour round trip drive and had an equally satisfying meal at a local sushi restaurant at half the price.

  • We loved our dinner at Kiji.
    OpenTable Diner Since 2005VIP

We loved our dinner at Kiji. The restaurant is in a part of the Mission that I'd thought was strictly residential, and while it wasn't, it was still pleasantly quiet. At 6:30 on a Tuesday the restaurant was remarkably empty, and when we left, at 8:30, there were still a few tables available--almost a crime for such a gem! Our server provided advice on some alternatives to the sushi we were ordering--all of which we enjoyed--but didn't seem disappointed when we chose a few old standards, anyway. And the price was very reasonable for sushi in San Francisco. We'll definitely go again.

Wow, I wasn't even aware of this, but it is the antithesis of aggressively loud SF restaurant. I really enjoyed a romantic dinner for two, and could actually have a nice discussion with my partner. Love the decor..it's a very dark room with splashes of color, with very thoughtful lighting. And the sushi is inventive and delicious. A real find, and I will be going back soon.

  • Super Sushi at KiJi
    OpenTable Diner Since 2012
    Dined on 6/18/2012
Joined 6 family & friends for a Farewell dinner at Kiji. Easy on-street parking. Had our own alcove which felt private. Prompt friendly service by several staff members. Drinks came first - plum wine, beers and mixed drinks. The sushi was OUTSTANDING - tender, delicious and beautifully presented. Fresh, Fresh, Fresh fish and seafoods. The chef prepared a special yellowtail with spicy sauce for my daughter, who was very pleased. Some "spicy" rolls were hotter than I am used to, but were okay even for wimpy me. The mixed textures (soft and crunch, etc.) of our selections were interesting. My taste buds were definitely happy! :) We will go again as Kiji is located close to my son's apartment.

We had dinner with two out-of-country visitors, both of whom had never had sushi. There was enough cooked dishes for them (one tried sushi!) - the waiter was extremely helpful with the sake selection and some of the cooked dishes (kara age and shrimp cocktail were big hits). Very good food and great service!

You'll love Kiji! I am not a big sushi fan, but will go with friends who love sushi and let them guide me. But here, I found things on the menu that genuinely piqued my interest and I was not disappointed. The carpacchios are superb, esp the hailbut and there is one more the name of which escapes me. Tempura's great, as is the roll with the soft shell crab. Great little ambiance and I think a well-kept secret, except for neighborhood residents in the know! Check it out!

I have been here a few times and the food is always fresh. They have amazing oysters and oyster shooters. The only reason I didn't give them all stars for food is because on my last visit, on one of my rolls the avocado had black bruising on it and for it to be on the outside of the roll is bad on presentation. But other than that, very creative rolls!

Had an early New Years dinner here with a friend; we got the best seat in the house (a cozy booth for two in the back room), and had a romantic, fun, enjoyable dinner. The sushi was some of the best I have ever had and we were so overwhelmed by the sake list that our waiter brought us a complimentary sample and sure educated us on the flavors and styles! It ended up being a fabulous evening. Living or visiting the Mission? Visit Kiji. It's contemporary, friendly, and delicious!
