A word from The National Bar & Dining Rooms
Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian brings his vision of a contemporary New York grand café to life at The National Bar & Dining Rooms. Housed in the same 1927 Emery Roth-designed building as The Benjamin Hotel, The National's all-occasion modern bistro offerings satiate guests from breakfast through late night. Modeled after the celebrated grand cafés in Europe, The National is both residential and metropolitan in design and offers thoughtful details such as antiqued mirrors, a bronze spiral staircase, distressed peacock blue and chocolate leather banquettes, classic marble table tops, and black and white glazed-tile flooring.

Each Sunday evening from 6pm to 10pm, The National features a lineup of New York City bands performing an array of musical selections such as classic jazz, funk, blues, and more.

The restaurant is bright and light, perfect for a morning meal. The breakfast menu has some unusual and eclectic items, different from the usual breakfast/brunch. The favorite of the table was the duck confit with biscuits and gravy.

A good spot for a business lunch, though the menu was rather limited. What they prepared, though, was good. The portion sizes were perfect -- not too large, not too small. The interior is sophisticated and appealing.

Very good for business lunches. Service is very good, they do not "over serve" and let you conduct your business.

My mom told me that it is better not to say anything then to say something bad. However, when the sommelier doesn't apologize and makes it feel like it is my fault for the waiter bringing out the incorrect vintage of a wine, in addition to the hostess sitting me in the bar area as opposed to the restaurant (which is night/day feel) it is hard to ignore. Don't come here expecting anything special, as the only taste youll remember is the bad one left by the service.

My ceasar salad had a lot of sandy grit in it, indicating the lettuce hadn't been sufficiently washed. The waitress was rude and offhand. The decor is pleasant.

They were very gracious about moving us to a table in the bar after a very boisterous holiday party group arrived. They (the restaurant, not the group)apologized. The noise in the dining room was unbearable because of the large group but the bar was quiet and nice.

Somewhat dissapointing. Decor and ambience are very nice. Food (brunch) was nothing special, just basic. For a limited menu with a high name behind, we expected more creativity, more menu items, bread service. Service was quite poor, unfriendly, not attentive.

The restaurant clearly has not been open long and there were serious coordination problems with the serving staff. Our cocktails took an inordinate length of time to arrive and once they did, an insistent server delivered our starters. We sent them back so we could enjoy our drinks. The server with the starters then came back before we had finished our drinks and plopped the food on our table. The food was really excellent although the Roast Chicken turned out to be a rolled chicken breast. It was delicious but not eaxctly truth in advertising. Our waitress was clealry overwhelmed. The room is beautiful and hopefully things will get sorted out with time. This could be a gem.

We enjoyed our recent lunch so much that we went back fro dinner 2 days later. Food was great. Waiter for dinner was overwhelmed with tables and needed help. There were 3 hosts at the podium doing little-it was a quiet night. They should have picked up the slack.

One unfortunate situation: the restaurant informed me that they ran out of my dish. I reordered another dish never guessing that it would take a half hour to execute. Meanwhile, the two other table guests received their dishes and were nearly finished by the time my dish arrived. Fine, if you are a trattoria in Rome or Florence but not this quality restaurant in New York.

It didn't feel like a buzzing resturant normally, but it's not clear why. The menu is small and there are not enough salad options. But the food we had was very good and the tea was excellent.

After eating at The Lamb's CLub the week before, I'd say The National is right on par with it's sister--good. Our waitress was awesome so shout out to her, staff was all lovely. Food was good but slightly over cooked, just past perfect. i/we had the grilled octopus (a little chewy) and pork chop (over cooked, a little salty) and the lamb shank (really good). I'd go again but wouldn't run back. Bar was busy looked great for after work.

Considering this is Geoffrey Zacharian's latest offering, my friend and I were disappointed. The caesar salad and chicken were okay, but on balance not that much better than what one finds in any other restaurant. We certainly expected more, although kudos for only charging $12 for a martini, instead of the outrageous $18 he charges at the Lambs Club.

I was extremely disappointed with my first visit to this restaurant. I rated the food as good because the first courses were. The Caesar salad was large and tasty and the octopus was tender. The skate entree was extremely so salty that it was almost unedible. The lamb shank was very good though. As for the noise volume...intolerable. The should have thought of an acoutical ceiling because you almost have to read lips to hear the waiter which made it an uncomfortable dinner to say the least.

Hope this place makes it in a space that seems to be bad luck. The staff couldn't be nicer and more attentive. Like the food, but wish there were some lighter fare on the menu. This is a great place to come for satisfying, comfort type food. I welcome the addition of The National to the Midtown East dining scene!
