A word from The National Bar & Dining Rooms
Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian brings his vision of a contemporary New York grand café to life at The National Bar & Dining Rooms. Housed in the same 1927 Emery Roth-designed building as The Benjamin Hotel, The National's all-occasion modern bistro offerings satiate guests from breakfast through late night. Modeled after the celebrated grand cafés in Europe, The National is both residential and metropolitan in design and offers thoughtful details such as antiqued mirrors, a bronze spiral staircase, distressed peacock blue and chocolate leather banquettes, classic marble table tops, and black and white glazed-tile flooring.

Each Sunday evening from 6pm to 10pm, The National features a lineup of New York City bands performing an array of musical selections such as classic jazz, funk, blues, and more.

This restaurant has changed and not for the better. Very high noise level with tables closely packed to maximize number of people and profit. The food we ordered was not hot and the brussel sprouts were like hunks of charcoal.

Great vintage decor; subway tile, steel and wood accents. Good food. Good service. Large serving ice tea hit the spot. Fries a specialty. Pulled chicken was very tender and on a soft bun, so they got this completely right. But very noisy. Fine at a two seat table but for 7 people on a large round table, we could not carry on conversation.

Friendly service at the bar and we enjoyed the Sunday evening jazz music. Our server was was not very familiar with the wine list and some of the selections were not available. She did not bring us bread even though we noticed every one else was receiving it. Once we were past our appetizer we didn't bother to track somebody down for it. The meatball appetizer was good as was the Atlantic Cod and Chicken entrees. We like casual modern and thought the food and atmosphere overall was just what we were looking for after an afternoon of shopping.

We hardly go out for breakfast/brunch. We were traveling to NY and really wanted to try Geoffrey's restaurant. So happy we did!!! Food was wonderful. I highly recommend this on a Sunday morning. My husband had the biscuits and gravy (not your typical recipe - far better). I had the pork belly eggs benedict. Coffee was nice and strong the way I like it.

The food was perfect, the service was very attentive. The profiteroles were amazing. I personally don't drink, but my dinner companion told me the cocktails were the best she'd ever had. I did find the dining room to be a bit noisy, but a lot of people like a lively atmosphere. That one little thing would not keep me away. Highly recommended.

Let me start off by saying the steak tartare I ordered was AMAZING!!.. that was my ONLY highlight of my 8 o'clock Saturday night dinner experience at The National.Food was mediocre, Service was HORRIBLE ! There's no real dress code that should be associated with fine dining. There were people who did dress for the occasion and there were people who didn't have a clue (baseball caps jeans and flip flops sandals)..like I said very disappointed especially for a place owned by a highly decorated chef

Food was flavorless and unseasoned. Fruit flies at bar and dining area did not help. The service however was the worst. I waited more than 10 min after making eye contact 3 times for the waiter to stop looking at the bus boys cellphone. This as we were the only table in the restaurant. When I mentioned it to him, he was neither apologetic or concerned. No attention to detail. Overall a bog disappointment and I have been to both butter and red rooster amazing compared to this.

The service was abysmal. Our waitress was more interested in gabbing with her co-workers than everything from taking orders to bringing the check and everything between. Combined with what can best be described as bland, boring food, this was a really disappointing experience.

I got the ugly burger wife got the tuna. Both tasted great. And there was something about the fries that really made them delicious. Maybe they were short-staffed on a Sunday night, but our server was sub-par. We had long stretches between seating and ordering and then it took a while to get desert order in as well. Also, we were served a different flavor of sorbet (since they were out of what we ordered) with telling us. I would not dine-in again but would order take-away.

  • A "Chopped" Judge's Restaurant

    Dined on 5/25/2014
'll be honest...our main reason for visiting this restaurant was that we discovered that it was owned by Geoffrey Zakarian, one of the judges on the Food Network's Chopped. It was also close to our hotel. So our verdict? The small plate/appetizers(meatballs, almond risotto) were good; but the main entrée (a baked/grilled chicken) was just ok(needed more seasoning). Perhaps we were expecting more, but the offerings were fairly simple, and simply prepared. It was early in the evening, so the crowd was light...yet, there was a jazz trio playing that was pretty good. Great location - close to several hotels, including the 'W' next door; and shopping.

I initially booked the reservation because i found out the the restaurant is a Geoffrey Zakarian restaurant. I am a huge fan of his on TV and i've never eaten at any of his restaurants. We ate charcuterie and a cheese plate to start. Everything was so tasty that we ate too much and I was a little too full before starting my entree. I ordered an Ugly Burger with bacon which i could eat every day it was sooo good. The fries were pretty special also. I wish i knew what kind of seasoning was used. I will be back again for sure.

I used the The National for a working breakfast. While the first experience some time ago was pleasant. The recent one was less so. The food is good and the atmosphere is pleasant enough. However, the service left to be desired. I had to insist three times to get a waiter to take the order and we he come it did it with obvious disinterest. I am not sure whether I will go back again.

I was expecting more from this restaurant since it was a Jeffrey Zaccharian restaurant. The food wasn't bad, but for the price and hype, it wasn't worth it. The octopus appetizer was good but tiny and a bit too salty. The burger was nothing special and the fries were over-salted. Perhaps I should have tried a fish entree or something else where maybe his cuisine would shine -- but for what I ordered, it was unimpressive. Also, noise level was ridiculously loud, which took away from the ambiance. I think once was enough for me.

Not sure what was worse, the disgusting meal or the server's complete lack of interest in it. The only inquiry was when he strode past our table and said - how is everything tasting? And literally never came to a stop. My mother (it was Mother's Day) said mine's ok but...well he was gone by then, off to cavort with his coworkers. I can't remember a meal that bad in a very long time. My mother's was ok enough to eat but mine had to sit untouched. The waiter literally averted his eyes from my plate, I guess he didn't want to deal with it. Interestingly, the bus boy came to take the plates away, again no one inquired why mine was uneaten. It was revolting. Luckily I had a $50 open table check and left a tiny tip. Won't be back.

Really looking forward to this dinner as the highlight of our weekend, glad we did other things. Service was poor, had to beg to get a glass of wine. Mussel appetizer was good when found some mussels and they were not at the bottom of the dish. Chop was very good. Broccoline raw. Fennel over powered my wife's fish, she couldn't finish it. Overheard hostess criticize the kitchen. Great chefs do not make a great restaurant. Very disappointing.

Pros: Cool ambiance with half circle leather booths. Good food - a mix of brunch classics with a special yummy twist (biscuits & gravy = shorts ribs & a biscuit) Cons: Loud techno music was a bit extreme for the 1920's art deco atmosphere, if you order a carafe of bloody marys ask for extra napkins the carafe is very tippy

I had the housemade yogurt, granola & berries. My husband had the chorizo omelet. Yogurt was the best I've ever had and I'm a bit of a yogurt fanatic. Husband said omelet was perfectly prepared. Coffee was rich and flavorful. Only downside was the service. Our server took our order and brought us coffee, then we didn't see her again until we finally were able to flag her down to refill our small coffee pot that had been left on the table. The restaurant was not busy and it seemed she had lots of spare time but just seemed to not even care that we were there. Had to flag her down again to remove our plates and bring our check. The good news is, the other server we observed seemed to be doing a great job.

We were happy to very conveniently make a late booking at The National via opentable.com half an hour prior to sitting down. My Cod was delicious and the Ugly Burger was very good but, according to my companions, not as outstanding as the burgers at Shake Shack! The service was well-timed and friendly and the bistro interior was wonderful, however, the noise level was rather disturbing so something ought to be done here, in order to make the visit more memorable!

Being in a hotel, this is a union shop, which for some reason means the service is uneven. We have a favorite waiter, Hector, who is amazing -- 5-star all the way, great food knowledge, perfect personality. The best of the rest is adequate. The food is the star here -- delicious takes on comfort food. Tonight, we had the amazing pork chop with cheese grits. fall-off-the-bone veal shank, and an octopus appetizer with sausage, to die for. The only hiccup was a new risotto -- almond. The previous squash risotto was everything a risotto should be. This was not really a risotto, awful. I don't know if they just boched mine, which is easy to do, but shouldn't happen here. Love this place but they have to focus on service and consistency.

Visiting this beautiful restaurant during my first ever trip to NYC really blew me away. Conveniently located a couple blocks from the hotel I stayed at, I was pleased to have found a place that took reservations as late as 10pm. Dinner was magnificent! From the wait staff to the menu, cocktails, setting, and wow--none of us at my table could stop raving about the food (which, PS, the serving sizes were just right)--we were back the very next morning for a beautiful and delicious breakfast. I HIGHLY recommend this venue for a wonderful experience in NYC.

Four of us recently had dinner at The National. The food was outstanding. The cinnamon Barbequed ribs, scallops, pork and the Ugly Burger were all delicious. This restaurant served some of the best food I have had in NYC. The sauces on the scallops, pork and ribs were outstanding. The home made cookies and profiteroles were a delicious ending. We go often to NYC to visit our children and have tried many restaurants. This was one of the best. Atmosphere was romantic with a tall candle on each table and noise level low so we could have a comfortable conversation.

Not that many great places for business lunch in the Waldorf Astoria area. This is a wide-open room. We were three people in a large booth so we felt like we had plenty of space to spread out and chat. One thing - a lot of noise. They should look into some sound-muffling steps. Food wise we ordered simple (burgers and chicken sandwhiches) but they were tasty. We would come back and we would recommend.
