A word from All Spice – San Mateo

San Mateo’s most exciting restaurant is All Spice, an eclectic, contemporary eatery from Executive Chef Sachin Chopra. Chef Chopra expertly blends the freshness of Californian ingredients with Indian spices to create an entirely new style of cuisine, at once light, familiar and warmly exotic. All Spice is proud to have been awarded a Michelin star, a distinction reserved for cuisine of the very best quality and consistency.

The restaurant is housed in a converted Victorian with beautiful hardwood floors, a fireplace and a variety of architectural details. Each of three intimate dining rooms is decorated in bold, shimmering hues accented with gold. Thirty seats are scattered throughout. Professional service and a thoughtful, moderately priced wine list complement Chopra's dishes.

To book reservations for parties of 5 or more, please call the restaurant directly.

Dinning at All Spice was an incredible experience.I enjoyed every bit of those amazing flavors, exotic and vibrant notes.Me and my husband had "Ode to my wife " (appetizer),Endive and pear salad, duck breast and lamb.Everything was delicious!!!The dessert was to die for. I had "Kufli" chocolate ice cream(unique flavor) and my husband had homemade ice cream(three different flavors). All the herbs, spices and aromas were like a beautiful and harmonious symphony.Service was excellent . The host and owner along with staff gave us a warm welcome and made us feel special. We are looking forward to come back and definitely recommending this place to our friends.Special thanks to the chef .He is an artist I dare to say not just a chef!

From the location in a Victorian house nestled between two strip plazas, you get the feeling you're in for something a little different and you are. The food is a mix of unusual flavors which surprise and satisfy. The amuse bouch was a white wine gelee with habernos. Service is comfortable so you don't feel rushed and can enjoy the food and conversation at your own pace. Definitely merits more visits to try more of the items now only if we could make reservations easier to come by.

We always love this restaurant. While it has an Indian influence in the spices used, it is not your typical Indian restaurant. The menu is very different and very creative. They also have a good wine list. I cannot remember the name of the chocolate dessert I had, but it was like eating a very cold chocolate truffle, only the size of an icecream scoop! Yummy!

We've been here several times over the years, and it just keeps getting better (which is difficult to fathom). Just took my dad and mother-in-law here for a special dinner, and they couldn't believe how good it was. Still talking about it, actually. Annoyed they got a Michelin star, though. Now everyone will know! :-)

We chose All Spice at the last minute for a co-worker dinner, and we were blown away by the amazing food, the charm, and the wonderful service. All Spice is tucked away in a restored Victorian off El Camino in San Mateo. Don't bother looking for the cute house from the street - it's completely obscured by newer buildings. We shared the roasted octopus appetizer and a deconstructed paella. The octopus was the star of the meal, so good that someone ordered it for dessert. I had the duck with chestnut puree and cherry sauce - beautifully roasted and a perfect portion size to leave room for the snowglobe ice cream sundae, an amazing combination of flavors: orange flower, chocolate, espresso, pomegranate, mac nuts, and cocoa puffs.

My only hesitation about reviewing All Spice is that it could make it harder for me to get a reservation next time. The food is superb, and the wait staff's attention to detail adds charm to a great meal. It's the kind of place where you don't want to order what anyone else is having so you can all share and be amazed over and over.

My husband and I enjoyed our meal from start to finish. We brought our own bottle of wine to enjoy, so that probably helped our overall experience :). We started with a delicious paella appetizer... I could have stopped there and been a happy camper! My husband order the wild boar stew -- melt in your mouth goodness with a kick of Indian spices, the kind of dish that makes you want to take another bite. I had the roasted duck medallions with baby bok choy -- the duck was cooked nicely, although I felt the skin could have been rendered longer for a crispier finish. I was a bit disappointed with the raw bok choy -- although it did add a freshness to the dish, it was bland and lacked creativity (just my humble opinion).

We did not know what to expect, but everything we ordered was very tasty, unique, and creative. The combination and surprise of the taste in your mouth was really sensational that we have not had that kind od creative tasty food for a long time. It is located in the San Mateo, so you can expect so much from the "professional " Waiters. So the service was not so polished. WIne selection was very good by the glass. We throughly enjoyed the experience, and we will take our friends and go back.

A great little hide-away off the main street. Everything was excellent, service, ambience, except for the food. We love spicy food and were expecting some strong flavors which just didn't happen. The food was served beautifully and cooked to perfection. The meat was tender and vegetables al dente... But lacked the flavors we were hoping for.

All Spice is a cute restaurant located in a lovely house tucked away behind some generic businesses on El Camino Real. The service was excellent; our waiter was very friendly, energetic, and helpful. The menu was creative and interesting, well presented and mostly very tasty. We tried the sunchoke soup (delicious, though neither of us are fans of olive so that was an off note), the bacon rosemary potato gnocchi (yum), the coconut cashew curry short rib (curry was a bit salty, shortrib good,), caramelized pear bastilla (yum with nice sweetness though occasionally bland bites of onion), dark chocolate kulfi (excellent) and rosemary chiffon cake (much more unusual than it sounds). I want to try more of the menu, and would definitely recommend!

This is a special restaurant for special occasions. The food is fantastic and well thought out. Service is beyond outstanding. They anticipate your needs and are there to help. It is a small restaurant hidden off of El Camino Real, making it a challenge to find if you're not familiar with the area. They have already received a Michelin rating and it's a relatively new restaurant! This is worth the cost alone as it is expensive. Don't miss it,.

Walk into All Spice and you're greeted warmly. It's elegant yet relaxing in a charming building. The food is outstanding; it might be the best on the Peninsula. I always get one of the vegetarian options but my dining partners vouch for the meat choices too. It's excellent and I recommend it highly.

We came here for my birthday after hearing so many wonderful things about it, and it did not disappoint. In fact, the evening was one of our most memorable dining experiences ever. The restaurant is located in a clapboard house tucked away from El Camino Real and the ambience is very intimate. The food was unsurpassed with each selection imaginative and surprising. Expect an array of tastes with subtle Indian notes - numerous sauces, bits of garnish - that combine with the main ingredients to create something greater than the sum of their parts. Service was gracious and unobtrusive. The wait staff seem to know they are part of something special. We plan to return for our next visit just to try every single appetizer on the menu.

My cousin and I ate at All Spice last Friday night - so glad we did. The food was absolutely wonderful. We started off with the Ode to Wife Part III - then I had the Roasted Acorn Squash and she had the Vegetarian Cassoulet. These two dishes were extremly flavorable. I can honestly say that this was the best vegetarian meal that I have had in a long time. I really didn't want my meal to end - it was that good. The food presentation was wonderful along with the service. Our waiter even brought us a sample of a kale dish complementary of the chef. Shoshana was so delightful. I think I found my new favorite restaurant! I almost want to try everything on the menu - too bad I don't eat meat. Looking forward to going back again.

My husband started with the gnocchi and I had the scallops. Both were equally as wonderful and we highly recommend them. Our dinners were also well executed. We both would also advise splurging on their delicious desserts. It is so worth it. It was the nicest dining experience we have had in a long time and we look forward to a return visit in the near future.

I was very impressed with All Spice. I had been looking for a special occasion place for a birthday dinner and this proved to be perfect. The food was excellent, imaginative and well prepared. The setting, separate small rooms in a 100 year old Victorian was charming and, best of all, quiet enough to hear conversations across the table (a rare thing in restaurants these days). The service was very good. All in all, All Spice was wonderful.

We have waited almost a year to try this restaurant . . . and it was so worth the wait! We started with the maple butternut squash potato gnocchi with spiced cashews -- very differently prepared and delightful. Next course was the pan-seared seabass for me, which was lightly crispy on the outside, cooked perfectly and mouth-watering. My husband had the special 'beef osso bucco' which was also amazing and served with a chanterelle mushroom sauce. Our friends' entrees were also big hits . . . 'abe e gosht' which was wild boar almost like a stew and our other friend had the venison steak which she said was outstanding. Service was outstanding and what you would expect at a restaurant like this. Can't wait to go back.

This is a wonderful, very interesting restaurant! The food is Indian but not Indian with flavors that complement each other and hint at Indian. We brought a caterer friend who felt there were to many flavors on the plate The rest of us (3) didn't mind it. The duck was not crispy and had grizzle but that may be how duck is suppose to be. We don't have a lot of experience with duck. We had the bass w/kimchie; vegetarian plate, flat iron steak and the duck. We all loved the 4 different appetizers we tried!! The dessert was a little less that spectacular but very good. We had ice cream and a non chocolate cake. The presentation was beautiful.

I am not a foodie but willing to try new things. The special that I ordered had multiple elements that were avant garde (ash coated potatoes, edible ice plant, smoked sour cream). It seemed too much and I didn't think the elements went together. One of these would have been enough to give the dish zing. On the other hand, my dining companion enjoyed her entree.

We got lucky to find a table the day of, probably because of a cancelation. There was another table empty the whole night so who knows. When we walked in we got an odd response. The host just stood there and didn't greet us. I was like hi...we have reservation. He warmed up later when he offered to take a nice photo of us. For middle class families this is a special occasion restaurant; expect to spend over $100 for a couple...especially if you have a drink. Most of the food was delicious (we are vegetarian). The Indian infusion was great. The chaat was OK and overpriced (especially for an Indian...ha!). Ode to wife and bread dish was delicious. Chocolate kulfi could have been double the size...so good!
