A word from All Spice – San Mateo

San Mateo’s most exciting restaurant is All Spice, an eclectic, contemporary eatery from Executive Chef Sachin Chopra. Chef Chopra expertly blends the freshness of Californian ingredients with Indian spices to create an entirely new style of cuisine, at once light, familiar and warmly exotic. All Spice is proud to have been awarded a Michelin star, a distinction reserved for cuisine of the very best quality and consistency.

The restaurant is housed in a converted Victorian with beautiful hardwood floors, a fireplace and a variety of architectural details. Each of three intimate dining rooms is decorated in bold, shimmering hues accented with gold. Thirty seats are scattered throughout. Professional service and a thoughtful, moderately priced wine list complement Chopra's dishes.

To book reservations for parties of 5 or more, please call the restaurant directly.

Great, quaint little romantic restaurant. The dishes are very sophisticated and perfectly portioned. I'm a foodie and avid restaurant-goer and this is one of 2 restaurants I've been to in at least 15 years that offers an amuse bouche. Nice touch. Wonderful little place. Keep in mind- it's BYOB until they get their license. I'd call ahead to check.

  • An Adventure Worth Repeating
    OpenTable Diner Since 2014

I could not have enjoyed the whole dining experience more. First - the restaurant was absolutely beautiful and the small dining rooms felt very intimate. Second - the service was impeccable; our waiter was extremely helpful and friendly, plus, the owner visited our several times to make sure we were enjoying ourselves and the food. And last but not nearly least - the food was unbelievable. Each plate was beautifully constructed with attention to the last detail and the flavors were an adventure to the palette. Each dish gave a nod to Indian food and then set off on its own journey. I believe that the cuisine could be enjoyed both by those who love Indian food as well as those without a taste for it. I can't wait to return.

You are home when you arrive at All Spice. The entire staff was happy to see our return trip. We found the menu had changed slightly since last time which makes for interesting new dishes and keeps the creativity flowing. The tuna tartar was fresh and delightful. The pork belly was absolutely moist, crumbling away from the bone with a deep tangy sauce. You have to try the bread pudding with the chili mango kick. At this time the wine license is in process so we brought our own wine, a 2005 german riesling from Gundetloch, a Spatlese. The owner is developing a wine list using her enology background. Can't wait for that list.

Our mistake that we failed to follow-up on the status of the restaurant's liquor license. My companion says she would have rated this restaurant higher if she had a glass of wine! I had read so many rave reviews about All Spice, perhaps I over anticipated. Some dishes were really spectacular, others, for us, were just okay. Being of Indian descent and also vegetarian, my friend was not as excited by her fritter and dosa as I was about my beet salad and lamb chop. The service was flawless and ambience very pleasant. I plan to return to try other items on the menu. My companion was happy that she came but does not expect to return soon.

This is a real gem in San Mateo. In the old "Dining Room" it is nicely updated. The wait staff was knowledgeable, attentive and pleasant. The food was outstanding. Very contemporary Indian. The Indian bread fritter was very tasty. I chose the Lamb "Sona Chandi" as I like nut sauces. Definitely will go back and have already recommended it to friends.

Our party of 4 loved our evening at Allspice. We each had different appetizers, entrees, & desserts & all were wonderful. The seabass & shortribs were notably delicious. The home setting of small, individual rooms in dark colors created a sophisticated, quiet ambiance and the attentive service was both professional & personal. We will return.

Small, different, friendly. The artsy/quaint setting in a converted house set off from El Camino is both homey (fireplace) and has a bit of Indian bling (gold and silver finishes). Good food - another take on Indian fusion cuisine with a more elegant and careful attention to food than some others in this genre. Great service. Nice change of pace from other Peninsula restaurants. Bring your own wine as they currently don't serve libations.

All Spice is an outstanding restaurant. Our server was engaging and knowlegeable about the menu, the food was incredible and the ambiance was very intimate. A short term issue is their lack of a liquor license, so there was no wine pairing option which would have taken our experience over the top. A must go if you are in the San Mateo area.

I've dined there twice already, and I consider it the best restaurant in San Mateo at the moment. The food is inventive and just plain delicious. Don't try to categorize it: it's not Indian, it's not American, it's just amazing. Highlights for me have included the 'Ode to My Wife' appetizer, any entree (though I really loved the short ribs vindaloo), and the trio of housemade ice creams for dessert.

What a great find. This is a very special place. The food is outstanding. The mixture of flavors, texture, and colors is superb. We all had different dishes and they were all exceptionally good. The service was excellent. If there was only one dish to recommend, it would be the something called "Ode to My Wife", a beet salad with goat cheese ice cream. Trust me, you will really like it.

We had dinner at All Spice on New Year's eve and would say they made a good effort, but for the price, they need to work on consistency and value. This little restaurant showed glimpses of brilliance. The butterfish main course was perfectly cooked. My husband had the pork belly and and it was tender and moist and full of flavor. The curried potato soup served over mushroom butter was rich, fully of spice, piping hot and full of complex flavors. Our appetizers, however, were misses. I had Diver scallops (served raw) with tomato garnish and the scallops were mushy and not very appealing. The dessert was just ok. Fruits poached in spice but pretty one dimensional.

Ambiance was nice, and it was cozy. The food was good and definitely fusion: don't expect naan or tandoori dishes here. The sturgeon was very good, and the barbeque short ribs vindaloo was good and spicy. Among the starters the scallops were good and the chicken wings quite spicy. The disappointments were the limited and unspectacular vegetarian selections and the desserts. The spinach dumplings were ok and we did not try the dosa. The name Kulfi for dessert was misleading since it does not resemble one by any stretch. Currently there is no wine, but should be available soon. We do plan to go back again to see if the vegetarian offerings change.

This story takes place in an intimate setting, as if the owners had invited you to their home for a private dinner. Tuna tartar was fresh and light. Beets were squared with a goat cheese nearby. Bacon wrapped rack of lamb cooked rare to my liking. The imigination of the chef was so evident in the bread pudding dessert with a touch of chili bite -- yum. The wine list is in development, but we look forward to possibly german riesling, gewurztraminer, SMC and RRV pinot. If you, like me, enjoy the occasional dinner where youn can actually hear your guest talk, it's there.

All Spice had promise....an upscale Indian restaurant in the neighborhood....but it was disappointing. The ambiance was very classy....the food presentation lovely....the food combinations, well strange is a good word to describe them. Very "out there" combinations. Brussle sprouts and sea bass in some sort of very exotic sauce comes to mind. The service, though attempted to be friendly...was a bit officious. The portions small the price high. The restaurant is very interesting. It is in an old Victorian house in San Mateo and they did a fantastic job of turning it into a lovely Indian restaurant. I love the fire place, nice touch. The food was fantastic, not your typical Indian. It very much has a Californian influence. I loved how they mixed sweet and sour flavors. I had a poussin which is a very small chicken and it was delicious, the meat fell off the bone. It had a wonderful pomegranate sauce. I also tried their homemade ice cream which was a dark chocolate and it was wonderful. If you have a special occasion this would be perfect, very small and intimate.
