A word from Fore Street
Located in Portland's Old Port District, Fore Street opened in June, 1996. The interior surrounds a unique brick and soapstone hearth with a wood-burning oven, grill and turnspit; visible from most tables. We believe that good food travels the shortest possible distance between the farm and the table. Our menu changes every day and is founded upon the very best raw materials from a community of Maine farmers, fisherman, foragers and cheese makers. Most of the Maine foods are organically grown or harvested wild, each brought to us at the peak of its season. In 2002 and again in 2007, Fore Street was named by Gourmet Magazine as one of the Top Fifty Restaurants in the United States. In 2004, Chef-Partner Sam Hayward was named Best Chef: Northeast by the James Beard Foundation.

Fore Street is perhaps the most consistent and best restaurant in Portland. We have been dining there for many years now and the quality is always the same in food, ambiance and service. Fore Street has an open kitchen with a brick oven; glassed in refrigeration showcasing vegetables; and an open prep counter. This atmosphere provides intimacy and enhances the dining experience. It is particularly comforting in the colder months in Maine. There are views of Casco Bay and the dock area from large windows. It feature hearty meats and fish. It is not an appropriate restaurant for a vegetarian although vegetable side dishes are excellent and hearty. Better options exist in Portland for vegetarians. Great for a special night out in Portland.

An absolutely spectacular dining experience. The ambiance was amazing and I particularly liked the open kitchen. The menu was outstanding and changes daily and the staff were knowledgeable and extremely pleasant. In twenty years of coming to Maine this was by far the best dining experience I have ever had and Fore Street rivals any of the fabulous restaurants I have been to in New York City.

We have dined numerous times at Fore Street. The menu is invariably full of interesting options both in seafoods and meats. They now feature Iberico hams from Spain as an appetizer. Spectacular! Wine are faily priced, with a wide assortment of modestly priced selections. Highly recommended.

Overall a very good experience. The bread was fantastic...hard to stop. Wine list was interesting and very affordable. Everything was cooked perfectly, and the vibe in the restaurant is good--warm, relaxed. We traveled all the way from Philadelphia to eat there, and it was well worth the journey!

I have heard about Fore Street for years. All great reviews of the food and ambiance. It has taken me a long time to get there and was truly worth it. It has a really nice rustic feel and the flavors of food are seasonal and hit the spot. The staff is knowledgeable and genuine. Thanks for a warm dining experience.

    Dined on 9/15/2008
Foie Gras was overcooked and dried out with the same, but grilled and now stale bread that was placed on our table with a drop on honey? Warm tomato tart had a very good, natural flavor, but puff pastry was undercooked and not crisp so the tomato broth and whipped cheese sogged the entire dish out. Duck Confit with Wild Muchroom Bread Pudding. Leg was tasty but the sliced breast was RAW. Our server mentioned that the breast would be medium rare (which is how you should cook the breast anyway) but when I pointed out my RAW breast (which is very tough and has no flavor when RAW) she argued with me to the point where I just got up and left.

We sat in the backroom, which tends to be quieter. Our waiter was attentive, informative, honest in his responses to our very particular questions. We had a mushroom soup which was very flavorful, but not as intense as a mushroom dish I make! The fish carpaccio was good, but not great. The pork, mashed potatoes and heirloom tomatoes, were outstanding, all perfectly prepared and presented. The portion of the pork is a bit on the heft side, but tender and flavorful. We shared and couldn't finish, the intense chocolate dessert with chocolate sorbet. We also each had a glass of the Baux de Provence red which was lovely.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2012

The food was very good overall, with a few missteps along the way. For example, our bluefish was moist and flavorful whereas the hake was bland and underseasoned. Also, the $9 trio of sorbets held only one with any discernable fruit (the spiced pear). Waitress service was excellent both in the bar, where patrons wait a very long time for a table, and tableside. The hostess staff, however, was polite yet reserverved and not helpful in seating us.

The food is outstanding. The produce is the freshest possible and of the highest quality. I haven't tasted a tomato like the one in their salad since last Summer when I visited Fore Street, Everything was absolutely delicious. Yet,both the food and the service are non-pretentious. It is truly a pleasure to watch the young people cooking and serving with such knowledge, skill and enthusiasm. The wine list is excellent and affordable. Special thanks to Lance, our efficient and non-intrusive server. In our annual visit to Mt. Desert in Northern Maine, we always arrange to get off the road in Portland so we can dine at Fore Street. So, my only suggestion is that you produce a clone closer to home.

No surprise, the food was fabulous - presentation, quality and taste. To my surprise, I found an Italian white wine (Suave Classico) that is rarely seen on restaurant wine lists, a special favorite of mine because we were introduced to it as we traveled through the region north of Venice where the grapes grow.

The food was excellent however, way too pricey especially the before meal salad...what was it $9...come on folks, you may have a top rated restaurant but don't let it get to your head...the tomato tart however was worth the $11, it was exquisite and the local chevre first-rate! The hanger steak was done perfectly inside and out. The lobster or crab roll was skimpy, it needs more flesh... The chocolates again were way too pricey but the best we ever had. The service was excellent during the main part of the dinner but, curiously she vanished prior to desert never to be seen again...perhaps this was due to our 9:30 seating as staff was cleaning up. The white beer was one of the best I ever had as well.

Reviews from friends may have caused very high expectations. The menu sounded fantastic but the food was just good. The staff was very courteous but the server neglected to check in with us for 30 minutes one time. We were seated near the open kitchen which was interesting to watch but a little busy and loud for my liking. It's definitely a trendy hot spot.

Wow. My husband and I went to Fore Street for the 4th of July and were absolutely floored. This understated restaurant's spacious and cozy decor was reminscent of SF's Zuni with brick, wood and copper details. We were instantly sold. The service was immaculate and the food left us speechless. The most amazing bread was too tempting to avoid and I swear the butter was laced with something. Incredible! I had a super fresh salad to start and the Wood-Fired Mussels as an entree. They were the best mussels I have ever eaten, hands-down. My husband's pasta was fantastic as well. Our wine was divine and the list impressed even my most discerning wind-fiend husband. For dessert, we had a pineapple something that had me nearly licking the plate.

We missed Jen's familiar face and warm greeting at the hostess station; her 11-year reign as the most powerful woman in Portand on a busy Saturday night was a most benevolent one--she is our all time favorite hostess and her efforts on our behalf will long be remembered by this grateful pair! Of course the "new" hostess crew is perfectly lovely and managed to give us our requested table, but we missed Jen. Food was mostly outstanding--the entrees (whole sea bass and hangar steak) and dessert (stone fruit crisp) were heavenly, however, it's worth noting (if only because the resturant sets such a high standard) that the morel mushroom side was merely OK compared to our last sampling of this side at Fore St. Overall, still a Portland favorite.

One of the best restaurants I've ever visited. This was my second trip there (it's 120 miles away), and everything was completely amazing--food, service, atmosphere. My only quibble was that it was extremely hot in the restaurant (I was seated near the open kitchen/wood-burning oven.) The variety of the menu, showcasing the best of local products, with everything being perfectly cooked, is truly extraordinary. Would go there a lot more regularly if Fore Street were only closer!
