A word from Fore Street
Located in Portland's Old Port District, Fore Street opened in June, 1996. The interior surrounds a unique brick and soapstone hearth with a wood-burning oven, grill and turnspit; visible from most tables. We believe that good food travels the shortest possible distance between the farm and the table. Our menu changes every day and is founded upon the very best raw materials from a community of Maine farmers, fisherman, foragers and cheese makers. Most of the Maine foods are organically grown or harvested wild, each brought to us at the peak of its season. In 2002 and again in 2007, Fore Street was named by Gourmet Magazine as one of the Top Fifty Restaurants in the United States. In 2004, Chef-Partner Sam Hayward was named Best Chef: Northeast by the James Beard Foundation.

No surprise, the food was fabulous - presentation, quality and taste. To my surprise, I found an Italian white wine (Suave Classico) that is rarely seen on restaurant wine lists, a special favorite of mine because we were introduced to it as we traveled through the region north of Venice where the grapes grow.

The food was excellent however, way too pricey especially the before meal salad...what was it $9...come on folks, you may have a top rated restaurant but don't let it get to your head...the tomato tart however was worth the $11, it was exquisite and the local chevre first-rate! The hanger steak was done perfectly inside and out. The lobster or crab roll was skimpy, it needs more flesh... The chocolates again were way too pricey but the best we ever had. The service was excellent during the main part of the dinner but, curiously she vanished prior to desert never to be seen again...perhaps this was due to our 9:30 seating as staff was cleaning up. The white beer was one of the best I ever had as well.

Reviews from friends may have caused very high expectations. The menu sounded fantastic but the food was just good. The staff was very courteous but the server neglected to check in with us for 30 minutes one time. We were seated near the open kitchen which was interesting to watch but a little busy and loud for my liking. It's definitely a trendy hot spot.

Wow. My husband and I went to Fore Street for the 4th of July and were absolutely floored. This understated restaurant's spacious and cozy decor was reminscent of SF's Zuni with brick, wood and copper details. We were instantly sold. The service was immaculate and the food left us speechless. The most amazing bread was too tempting to avoid and I swear the butter was laced with something. Incredible! I had a super fresh salad to start and the Wood-Fired Mussels as an entree. They were the best mussels I have ever eaten, hands-down. My husband's pasta was fantastic as well. Our wine was divine and the list impressed even my most discerning wind-fiend husband. For dessert, we had a pineapple something that had me nearly licking the plate.

We missed Jen's familiar face and warm greeting at the hostess station; her 11-year reign as the most powerful woman in Portand on a busy Saturday night was a most benevolent one--she is our all time favorite hostess and her efforts on our behalf will long be remembered by this grateful pair! Of course the "new" hostess crew is perfectly lovely and managed to give us our requested table, but we missed Jen. Food was mostly outstanding--the entrees (whole sea bass and hangar steak) and dessert (stone fruit crisp) were heavenly, however, it's worth noting (if only because the resturant sets such a high standard) that the morel mushroom side was merely OK compared to our last sampling of this side at Fore St. Overall, still a Portland favorite.

One of the best restaurants I've ever visited. This was my second trip there (it's 120 miles away), and everything was completely amazing--food, service, atmosphere. My only quibble was that it was extremely hot in the restaurant (I was seated near the open kitchen/wood-burning oven.) The variety of the menu, showcasing the best of local products, with everything being perfectly cooked, is truly extraordinary. Would go there a lot more regularly if Fore Street were only closer!

A nuanced space for those that like fine dining dressed down and with a regional inflection. Of regional import are arguably the best mussels in New England and the whole fish (sea bass) was on par with any and all comers. A reasonable price point on every selection (wine to dessert) makes this the best of all possible worlds for those venturing to or near Portland.

I wish I could give it 3.5 stars. I've been to Fore Street twice now and I haven't left overwhelmingly impressed or unimpressed either time. The food is good. Not great, not bad, but good. It's fresh, and prepared well, but like too many other Portland restaurants, it's really sort of bland and not so creative. The menu is pretty basic. The chef is clearly talented, I don't know why they can't create something a bit less... plain. Reasonably priced. Service isn't bad at all, they're very friendly and attentive. The decor is what you'd expect in a small Maine city like Portland- rustic and quaint. By Far the best restaurant in Portland (and Maine), but that's not saying much. It's worth it, just don't expect knock your socks off g

    Dined on 5/10/2008
We made a special weekend trip to Portland to go to two of their famous restaurants, one of which was Fore Street. The food didn't live up to expectations, although it was good. The menu items sounded much better than they were, with tastes that had, for example, and overbearing acidity, too much vinegar, and none of them were entirely unique or as good as similar dishes we had elsewhere (except for the dessert, which was great). Our server was fantastic, which made the experience an overall excellent one.

ambience is great, service was excellent BUT food needs addressing: There is simply way too little for the price you pay, you get nothing with your dinner, no side, nothing... paid nearly $30.00 for a piece of fish (maybe 6 oz) that came with 3 tiny spears of asparagus. Not a good value, have decided not to return; even though we have been here previously. The price for what you get is simply giving the customer no value at all. Sorry.

Four Street is the gem of Portland. Unassuming former warehouse from the outside becomes warm and inviting restaurant on the inside. Huge original windows, copper tables, completely open kitchen, and wood oven create an warm comfortable atmosphere. Dining there during a snowstorm is really special as you see the snow fall outside, gently lit by the warm fires of the wood oven. The food is excellent. Most everything comes out of the wood oven so basic fish and meat dishes are complimented by smoky, tasty sauces. All side dishes are a la carte, and garlic mashed potatoes are very good. Signature dishes include the mussel in cream sauce appetizer, the pork loin and fantastic fish. Service is friendly (mostly), efficient and knowledgeabl

I just wish there were a Fore Street in Boston where I live. We chose Fore Street for a special dinner on a weekend getaway to Portland. The wood grilled fish was the best I ever had and I am a 62 year old foodie! Vegetables and salads were outstanding too. Seems weird to rave about a cheese tray...but Fore Street's was almost worth the trip. The selection of perfectly kept New England cheeses was outstanding with some stand out "rarities". I would happily give this place 6 stars, a higher rating than Radius, Rialto and all those other fancy Boston restaurants.
