The first time was an awesome time. I have put this on the highly recommended list. The non-alcoholic Cosmo was the best and the Crab cakes were awesome. The guest of honor had the Ribs and said that they were the best. The service was great, accommodations impeccable, and the menu priced accordingly.

I'd never been to Hampton St. Vineyard before, but had heard good things. It's in a great location downtown. The decor inside was nice and the noise level was busy, but relaxed. The server seemed almost disinterested at first, but eventually warmed up slightly. When ordering wine, we chose a Pinot Noir, and he recommended a "better" bottle that was heavily discounted, so we tried that one. It was terrible for a Pinot and for the lighter dishes that we'd all ordered. It tasted more like a Cabernet with heavy oak flavor. NOT a good recommendation. The food, apps and entree's, just did not live up to expectations. Most of the meats were overcooked and the flavors were underdeveloped. I could do better at home.

As first time guests, we were taken with the friendly and welcoming reception we received from the owners as well as the regular patrons. It fit us as if we had been patrons there for years. To add to the evening, every glass of wine and every course of the meal was top-notch! overall an excellent dining experience.

Located in a historic downtown building, it is reminiscent of a ground level cafe in a brownstone on the Upper East Side. We were seated at a beautiful streetfront table, but found some adjacent patrons quite "energetic" and asked to be moved. The new table in the private wine room was perfect. The food was creative (especially the fruit slaw with the seared sea scallops) and perfectly prepared. The wine list is bountiful and modestly priced. The service was attentive. This is one of Columbia's best!

We always enjoy ourselves while dining at HSV. The food is delicious - fresh, well seasoned and cooked to perfection. The service is outstanding. The wine list is exceptional. The staff goes above and beyond to make your time at HSV a lovely experience. One of our favorite "date night" spots in Columbia!

After a promising first impression of a warm and cordial place with a nice small-restaurant/bisto ambience, things went downhill. Service was very slow, food was average to poor, though the wine list gets an "A" for its variety of choices and prices. After several attempts to find a truly good restaurant in Columbia, we're still searching. We won't be back to this one.

The food and presentation was generally good but 3 of our 4 entrees came out barely warm enough to eat. Service was fair - waiter was helpful with their extensive wine list but when he came back to ask us how our entrees were, he walked away before giving us a chance to respond. Restaurant is fairly small and very noisy, but we knew that coming in.

The atmosphere here is definitely great for a special occasion. It's quiet, and a little swanky. The service we received was very poor however. I received the wrong entree, the server never apologized, and overall he seemed rather annoyed with his job. The other servers seemed friendly and helped to correct my order, but I feel that the food quality and service did NOT justify the price nor match the atmospherre they were trying to promote. I will not be returning anytime soon.

The salad was EXCELLENT, the steak however, was VERY bland and was decent at best, which is not what I would expect at this type of restaurant. I've heard a lot of good things about The Hampton Street Vineyard but was not impressed at all, also, the waitress put the wrong food order in so that we ended up getting our food an hour and a half later, she was also not very apologetic about it, she didn't seem to have very good customer service. Unfortunately, I will not be dining here again nor will I recommend it to any of my friends.

The food was mediocre at best. The food was an attempt at haute cuisine without the skills to pull it off. The crab cake had so much horseradish creame in it it was inedible. The menu did not allude to the crab cake having horseradish. It was supposed to be jumbo lump crab. It wasnt - it was back-fin meat. We were very disappointed to say the least. Would not recommend the restaurant nor will we go back.

I went on a Valentines date. The seating was quick, staff was friendly. The food and service were not as good. The waitress seemed too busy. The mashed potatos had FULLCLOVES OF GARLIC!I asked for a medium done cut of beef and got a rare cooked piece. Pretty difficult to eat after bitting into a garlic clove!

The chef did a great job as all four of us had different entrees and everyone felt what they ordered was excellent! My wife had duck and thought it was great. My daughter had grouper and loved it. My wife's mother had crab cakes and ate more the we ever see her eat. And I had short ribs that were the best I have ever had anywhere. They were boneless and all fat had cooked away and the oriental hoisin sauce was perfect.

It was an overpriced dining experience; we will not return, it was our second try. It has an interesting menu but uninteresting food preparation/presentation. The table for two was too small, the chairs uncomfortable--no, we are not big prople. We've lived in SC five years, have still not found a fine dining restaurant we would return to more than twice. I suspect most are still evolving.

  • Hampton Vineyard - disappointing
    OpenTable Diner Since 2011
    Dined on 1/19/2011
I was terribly disappointed. This place was recommended for my birthday. Food was mediocre and incredibly small portions for dinner. Husband ordered Scallops for main entree which consisted of 3 scallops with about 2 tablespoons of cous cous for $24. I ordered the grouper with similar amount. If it had been amazing that would have been one thing but this was nothing special. Black bean soup was tasty but the springroll appetizer was just so-so. I wouldn't waste your money. Kitchen must need more exhaust fans because all I smelled was a "greasy kitchen" odor.

My wife and I had visited the Hampton Street Vineyard several times in the past and quickly recommended the restaurant among "Columbia's finest". Although the food was nice, the lack of warmth and hospitality made our 20th anniversary here a letdown...especially since I placed "The Note" to the manager that it was our 20th anniversary...this was ignored as was our special night. I am reminded of sending a note from Iraq to our favorite restaurant in El Paso, TX and told the owner that I looked forward to coming back to again have the pleasant time with my wife at his restaurant. He ignored the note, no reply and "zap" the luster the restaurant once had was lost. Having a restaurant is about developing loyalty and care for customers.
