  • We decided to sit in the front
    OpenTable Diner Since 2009
    Dined on 12/30/2010
We decided to sit in the front room nearer the bar, instead of the quieter - and lovely- dining room. It was bustling and festive.. Our server was uber knowledgable about oysters.. which was key because we were there to gorge oysters. There was a fantastic selection - pleasantly surprised to find many local oysters. Tuned to our taste for the brinier and more mineral, he steered us well- as he did for the wine pairings. There were many unfamiliar wines, very moderately priced, and were glad we followed his suggestions that were perfect for the moment. The room is airy and lit wonderfully. We tasted a few other apps and split a main course and left feeling well indulged, but light. Plan to return, very soon!

  • Our first visit to ICOB started
    OpenTable Diner Since 2006
    Dined on 12/29/2010
Our first visit to ICOB started on a bad note. We arrived on time for our reservation only to have to wait 30 more minutes to be seated. There were only 3 of us in our party and while the hostess would give us updates on the status of our table, I could not help but feel irritated that the wait kept going on longer and longer. When we were finally seated, we were brought 2 glasses of sparkling wine which was a nice gesture. The meal itself was very good. The oysters were excellent and we had 3 each of 6 types. Our server was very knowledgeable of each kind and we appreciated her recommendations. Only 1 in our party ordered an entree, the scallops, which were well prepared but served on a small portion of the apple/celery root "slaw".

What a fantastic evening! Our family of four enjoyed our special dinner out while on vacation. Skip's Raw Oysters and all four meals were perfect hits and the desserts - fabulous! I'm looking forward to coming back because there were so many more excellent choices on the menu that I need to try. And the service was out of the ball park, spot on. A perfect night out! Thanks!

  • Sometimes the simple things
    OpenTable Diner Since 2006VIP
    Dined on 12/24/2010
Sometimes the simple things are the best things, and Island Creek Oyster Bar gets it right. The raw oysters are outstanding, whether local or from the west coast. Fresh, cold, plump and briny, they are exactly what an oyster should be. We also shared a wedge salad, but here the iceberg lettuce was young and tender, with a silky bleu cheese dressing and large bacon chunks - not the tired lettuce and indifferent dressing you so often see. Oysters Gregory was splendid and the oyster stew was to die for. We didn't even make it off the appetizers and into the entrees. Our server was pleasant but a bit off - maybe because it was Christmas Eve. Drinks were great. A welcome addition to Kenmore Square. We're looking forward to returning!

    OpenTable Diner Since 2009VIP

Service was a little bit slow in coming. I hope the waitstaff is better at discerning a menu that is closed and put down, thus indicating that the patrons are finished choosing, from a menu that is still being read through. In other words, waitstaff did not time their arrival/inquiry for order correctly. Other than that, lobster roll was amazing and the oyster, clams were soooo fresh.

I've been here three times. The food is fantastic and the room is very dramatic with the back wall full of oyster shells. Oyster selection is excellent. Very interesting menu. Last time my friend said her crab cake was the best she's ever had. The oyster slider was also excellent. I highly recommend it to everyone I come in contact with. Wish you were open for lunch.

  • The newly renovated space
    OpenTable Diner Since 2006
    Dined on 12/22/2010
The newly renovated space is really nice - modern organic? The service is fantastic, and the food is just as good. I really enjoyed the oysters, shrimp cocktail, clam chowder, and scallops as my main entree. For dessert we got the donuts. My husband got the baked stuffed lobster and didn't enjoy it quite as much (he wouldn't get it again, the preparation was odd with the stuffing not actually being stuffed into the lobster). The only down side is that it can get very energetic and somewhat loud. This place is pretty expensive too, so just be prepared for $28+ entrees.

A fish lovers paradise. Oysters on the half shell couldn't have been fresher and so good.Line caught swordfish special was fantastic. Garret Harker, the owner, is at the helm of this ship. He is personable and makes sure that everything runs smoothly. This place has very interesting entres that are not your garden variety seafood. Very creative menu with something for everyone.

Loved the decor! We ordered a large order of fried clams for the table of four for an appetizer.....they were delicious but there were not enough and were charged $25. Could not get over that price! We think it was a bit pricey overall and would enjoy it more if the portions were larger and the prices were not.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2005
    Dined on 12/12/2010
The food was good. The ambiance was a bit sterile. Soups, Oyster and clam, were excellent although the clam was a bit over herbed. Lobster dish was a bit small for the $33 price. Served plated out of shell a'la novelle cuisine. Stuffing was excellent, but meager. Excellently prepared lobster meat. I had to send back the fries side order as they were unpalitable salty. The replacement fries were excellent. The oysters were excellent although no cherrystones clams. Had to ask for horseradish which was cheerfully supplied. All oysters were a-la-carte. I would have liked dozen assortment special. Half bottle of Sancerre reasonably priced at $24 and excellent. Deserts looked uninspired at ICOB. Went to Finale.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2008VIP

After reading the review for ICOB in Boston Magazine, I had high expectations, but my experience at the restaurant did not live up to them. The raw bar selection was vast, and the oysters were fresh. However, I don't eat raw fish, and the number of cooked options on the brunch menu were disappointing. The fruit plate was overpriced (come on- a quarter of an apple and half of a banana?) - it should have (at least) included berries. The French Toast had too much cranberry chutney, which was overpowering. Service was confusing - we probably had 10 different people serve us, and one of them came over while we were eating to ask us "if we had ordered enough." If I had to choose between ICOB and nearby Eastern Standard, it would be ES hands-down.

Hip, lively, and crowded, Island Creek Oyster Bar has become THE spot for dining out in Kenmore Square. Dinner is pricey...bring a fat wallet along. The nearly all-seafood menu offers an array of East Coast and West Coast oysters, fried clams, a lobster roll, all sorts of goodies from the sea, and a nice wine list. Service on a weeknight this week was slow, but Garrett Harker, the very charming owner, came by to chat for a few minutes, which was a nice touch. The room is great looking - it's silvery and bright. A dramatic change from the dark dining room I remember from when the space was Great Bay. Yes, I'll return and give it another try soon. The local oysters were excellent.

  • I was skeptical to try ICOB
    OpenTable Diner Since 2006
    Dined on 12/5/2010
I was skeptical to try ICOB because of my opinion about oyster bars and their non-oyster offerings (often overpriced and not as tasty). Plus, ICOB came into a huge space, which used to be Great Bay, an overpriced seafood restaurant. The remodelers did an amazing job to bring the right atmosphere to the space and the executive chef has a menu that pleases people's different tastes and financial comfort zone. The $19 lobster roll, fried seafood selection, and $16 burger, is a great fallback if you're not looking to spend upwards in the $20s on lobster roe noodles, homemade/classic seafood casserole, or whole roasted sea bass. I really loved everything so much about ICOB that I am going again in less than a week.

Excellent raw bar; great seafood dishes. So the kitchen is great. The front of the house is horrible. What's with the martini glasses that look more like sorbet glasses and hold only 3 ounces. Are you kidding me? Wine list was full of inexpensive poorly selected wines from unknown regions that was different just to be different. We had 3 different bottles and all were poor - thin austere flavors with no guts and no finish. Service was very inattentive. Wake up, already!! Look at the anxious faces on your customers who want to order. Visually and culinary wise, lots of potential. Get a better floor manager and crack the whip.
