A word from Guayoyo Restaurant
Guayoyo, located on the corner of First Avenue and 4th Street, is a Venezuelan bistro owned by chefs Carmen Isturiz and Masanobu Ishikura. Although Guayoyo bases its roots in Venezuela, it is also influenced by different cultures and offers an inspired menu that reflects the diversity of the lower east side and Carmen and Ishi's home cooking. Guayoyo offers traditional Venezuelan specialties such as Pabellon Criollo and Arepas, alongside Duck Confit Rolls, Black Bean Mojo Burgers, and anything in between.

We were so looking forward to eat at Guayoyo's. Moved to the US 2.5 years ago from Venezuela and, since I am not much of a cook, my daugther was at the top of her cravings for typical Venezuelan food and Guayoyo did not dissapoint! The arepas, empanadas and tequenos were perfect. I ordered the open faced arepa with Smoked Salmon, avocado, queso guayanes and jalapenos and it was to die for. They could improve on speed (at least for greeting, giving out menus and serving drinks) - there was only one server when we arrived (12:30 PM for Sunday brunch on Oct. 7th - venezuela's election day). But on a positive about the wait, we got to enjoy the restaurant. Cannot wait to go back....the drive from Philadelphia is worth it!

This place was great. A small family shop but they do it right. The food was delicious!!! The only thing that the service was slow. Maybe they were short handed-??? I would recommended it- just be ready to wait for your refill of sangria! Chaeers

Food was great and it was a fun spot to go for a casual meal with a large group. Our only complaint was the waitress. Basic things, like getting napkins or water were challenges. In the two hours there we never even go the extra napkins (we asked a few times). I understand that groups get lesser service (since automatic tip) and they were busy, but that was very odd

Thanks for the great birthday party Guayoyo! You treated my group of 10 maybe 15, I mean 13! to a great dinner, an intro to Venezuelan food for most of us and so delicious! The sparklers on my dulce de leche cake were a perfect highlight for my special day. Thank you!

Our first visit to a Venezualan restaurant was perfect. Our waiter explained everything and made some recommendations. Everything we ate was wonderful. We had an early reservation and were seated immediately. By the time we left, the restaurant was crowded. It was not a really hot day so the door was open and fans running. If it had been any hotter and they did not run the airconditioner it would have been uncomfortable.

I booked a reservation for my boyfriend's 30th birthday with his parents. I wish I could remember our servers name- it was a friday night (march 16th) so whichever tall dark and handsome server had that shift- THANKYOU. He was way cool and gracious. The food is good for nyc locals and tourists alike. It was empty when we arrived, which was fine so we could talk. About an hour later it was completely packed, which was also fine, as that put us in the mood for more drinks later. Keep in mind this is South American cuisine, not Mexican or Nuevo Latino. I really enjoyed the experience!

The food was delicious. The service was wonderful. The waiter helped us pick out our meals. One of my friends is a vegetarian. Waiting at the bar for some of our party to arrive, we got free tapas with our drinks. It was my birthday, and the restaurant surprised me with a small cake with a 4th of July sparkler on top!!! I am returning with a different group of people on Nov. 28th, still celebrating my birthday.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2005VIP

Guayoyo has potential, but the food my group had was hit or miss, and the service was particularly uneven. The drinks we ordered didn't arrive until after all of our food had arrived even though we reminded our server a couple times and even though it wasn't particularly busy at the time. It was also a struggle to get water refills. Among the food, the chorizo and beef arepas were quite good, but the pork arepa was very dry and bland. We also shared several tapas, most of which were mediocre. Stick with the arepas.

We were close to walking out. It took 45-60 minutes just for our 2 appetizers to arrive. We were astounded how it could take that long to serve pork belly and chorizo. It would have been at least nice if they could acknowledge that we had been waiting that long. Our waitress didn't even come over during that whole time to see if we wanted another drink. When our apps did arrive, they were delicious and our mains came shortly after. The oxtail was perfectly delicious with the meat falling off the bone. The round eye roast was also great, with perfectly cooked plantains. The food and vibrant atmosphere made up for the long wait for food and poor service (at one point, they had given me the impression they had lost my credit card!!).
