A word from Estadio
From the talents behind Proof, Estadio recently debuted on trendy 14th St NW, above Logan Circle. According to blog.zagat.com 'offering contemporary takes on regional classics in pintxos, tapas and entree-sized portions, along with sandwiches on housemade bread, all washed down by Iberian wines (many under $10 a glass) and frozen alcoholic slushies; the über-stylish setting incorporates decorative wrought iron, reclaimed timber, colorful tiles and themed murals, with seating at a large concrete bar, a marble counter facing the open kitchen and window-side tables perfect for scoping the vibrant street scene.'

Excellent service -- the food was just okay and the drinks were a bit stingy. For $9 my glass of Rioja was barely filled, and my friend's sangria was served in a juice glass. Most of it was underseasoned. The cheese plate contained miniscule portions, for example. I realize this is tapas but even by that standard, servings were tiny. I'd heard that about this place but had an open mind -- sadly, the comments were tru.

This was a great experience! The waiter was opinionated and spot on with his recommendations and the tapas were excellent. We all loved especially the squash soup, black cod and the pork belly. We also had a great table in the front by the window, which was a little further from the bar (noise). I would recommend this place to everyone!

Estadio is a great spot for a variety of dining. I've been for dinner, brunch, and happy hour that progresses in to dining at the bar. The bartenders are great, the food very good, and the general vibe is hopping. The only downsides are: the use a machine to measure an exact 4 oz pour of wine and so if you drink wine by the glass, brace yourself for one heck of a bill. That's a bummer and takes away from the experience. Also, the front desk people are awful - they forget regular customers and don't seem to acknowledge or appreciate that people have choices. If anything affects this place negatively, it will be the wine pour and the front desk poor customer service.

Great food and wine. Very crowded though; we were sitting at a table near the bar and kept getting elbow-bumped by the people trying to pass between the three-deep bar crowd and our table. That was the only downside to a great meal. The foie gras mousse and smoked duck breast open faced sandwich was awesome. Our plate of jamón serrano and glass of garnacha reminded us of being back in Madrid.

  • While nothing on this menu
    OpenTable Diner Since 2009
    Dined on 12/26/2010
While nothing on this menu will surprise a tapas fan, the dishes we had were made very well and the ingredients were excellent. The sandwiches, open or closed, were fantastic; we considered ordering more. The tortilla was light. Kale was a little too salty, probably owing to its natural saltiness (don't season kale!). I fell in love with the decor. Couldn't stop looking around. My only major peeve: my cava cocktail was served ice-less (understandably) in an old-fashioned glass 2/3 full. Consider the presentation: it looked like I was being given a drink that had been sitting on the bar after someone drank part of it. It didn't really matter how it tasted at that point; the psychological imagery had been set.

Very knowledgeable wait staff, delicious food. White sangria is addicting! We really enjoyed our dinner. The only thing I would change is pricing - for the deviled egg dish $5 gets you 1/2 egg and white sangria seemed to come in shot glass size for $6. Either way, absolutely delicious.

I'd heard quite a bit about Estadio and have been dying to go there. The food was excellent. The portions are a little bigger than I expected (I ordered tapas). The setting is great. Everything down to the furniture and the soccer games playing on the tv's. My biggest knock is that they don't sell sangria by the pitcher.

the night we went was early. service was attentive, the food suggestions were good, however management young and inexperienced. the fire alarm with bells and whistles went off. no one came to the table to explain what was happening. ok, i understand this can happen, and in their defense they had no control over. BUT, come on guys, the alarm was in effect for 25 minutes and management acting like this was just another day? i went to POSTO the other night and service was a bit slow..staff offered a free appetizer for the inconvenience. Not that it matters because ESTADIO is hopping right now, but sustaining your customers through consistent and conscientious service will prove to make a good restaurant a great one

  • Estadio featured very well
    otberburVIP
    Dined on 12/12/2010
Estadio featured very well conceived and executed small plates full of bold flavors which are complemented well by the many wines and cocktails offered. The two of us ordered about ten plates -- ranging from snacks such as wickedly spicy almonds to main courses -- and all were on the mark. Service was helpful and efficient. Seating is more comfortable than it looks; by the same token, the noise level when the room is full -- it nearly always is -- is energetic, but not so loud that conversation becomes an uncomfortable exercise in shouting and lip-reading.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2007
    Dined on 12/7/2010
By most accounts this tapas place is great for meeting friends after work for a fun cocktail and warm, comforting food with a kick. While I was taken aback by the $7.50 charge for a (what seemed to be very small) 4.5 oz glass of wine served in traditional Italian style short, flat scotch glasses, our server was very attentive and helpful. The place was packed by 7 pm on a Tuesday, so I highly suggest reservations if possible. The tapas portions are fine, it's just that the prices seem a bit higher than normal for that area for an un-proven restaurant. I would go back, but not order the mushroom plate, as much as I love them, it was uneventful. The chicken is impossible to share but the mussels are good.

We enjoyed Estadio. The food we had was very good, and our server was competent and accommodating. However, our server was not knowledgeable about Spanish foods. We were also surprised that more of the items on the menu were not traditionally Spanish -- for instance, I would have expected gambas al aljillo rather than shrimp with garlic and lemon, and our server could not tell us if this was the same dish or not.

Perhaps it was because we ate at Estadio during weekend brunch, but I was not blown away by the menu. This is unfortunate, in that Estadio has been at the top of my "to do" list to visit, as well as being mentioned by every foodie portal as being outstanding. While I thought our experience was perfectly adequate, I wasn't overwhelmed - perhaps that's due to the limited brunch menu, which was a little pretentious in description. For example, ALL eggs are "hen" eggs. Still, the service was very good, so I guess this means we'll give it another try for dinner soon.

I think we did not visit Estadio at their best. It was the Friday after Thanksgiving and I do not think they had their best team cooking. Both of our fish dishes were overcooked. The sauces were very good. The mussels were just okay and the sweetbreads were a bit greasy. The Meat plate was high quality but probably not much of it was house made, if so the menu or server didn't sell that feature. I was a bit disappointed given their press about being the best new restaurant and hope they hit their stide soon as I love authentic Spanish tapas.

A great addition to the DC dining scene. Food is very good, although the current trend of offering menus consisting of just small plates is really annoying. While it is nice to have dishes to share, the portions are VERY small and by the time you are finished eating it is very EXPENSIVE. I eat out alot and do not mind shelling out $ to dine out. I do it often but Estadio is pushing it a bit. Also the drinks are OUTRAGEOUSLY priced ..$10-11$ for a small drink that you can drink down in 4 sips. Also 4.5oz glasses of wine are too small too .

However, beyond the names and the size of the dishes, I would not really characterize it as Spanish cooking. Nevertheless, it was very good. The service is fine. Altogether, a nice place to go with friends for tapas-style eating.
