We had an overnight layover at LAX on our way to Mexico and I wanted something that was not too far from the airport. This place is in Venice, about a 20 minute cab ride. I had never tried it, but it was a great choice. The food was excellent and so were the cocktails. The owner has had the place for years and comes in all the time. He was there and we got to meet him and told him we would be back the next time we are in town. There is very wonderful art on the walls and the whole place has a feel of being welcomed into someone's home. I had the duck breast, which was good, but my companion's pork chop was even better.

Food was amazing! HOWEVER, after making a special note on open table reservation (for 4) then reconfirming with the restaurant for my husband's Birthday Celebration.... they forgot!!! However, after speaking to the hostess, our disappointment was relayed to our server but the surprise was completely deflated ending in a disappointing birthday bummer. This was not Open tables fault... was the restaurants.

I'll review it again, since they are consistently great. I like the food very much; the muffin basket brought to each table makes me very happy, as does their cappuccino. The service is terrific, and the waiters and buspeople attentive and responsive. I've never had cause to complain, but I have had reason to tell them how great they are. We bring new people here all the time. Parking is the only problem, so be prepared to walk a few blocks, or to drive around a while.

This is the second time I have been here. All was good except getting seated by the hostess at a booth in a totally open restaurant right next to a loud table of adults with a squealing small. Tolerated it as much as I could and then finally had to go to the hostess and ask for another table. She looked at me like I was from another planet. Anyway, as we were getting ready to move to another table, the other party left and we had some peace and quiet. The service was good. Everyone enjoyed their appetizers main course the desert we all shared. We would come back again. Management should realize that the hostess is an important part of the whole dining experience and shouldn't be filled by someone with no personality or experience.

Hal's has of the "old" Venice vibe, before Abott-Kinney became the hot spot today. I like the high ceiling and the neighborhood casual ambiance. The noise level is manageable, I can actually have a conversation without screaming!!! However, the menu needs a bit of updating - could use more variety than the typical salad and burgers selection for lunch/brunch. But the best part: The service is reasonably friendly, (without the hipster attitude in the other new Venice restaurants). I don't need to make reservation a few months in advance. Walk-ins are greeted in a hospitable way. That's bonus point for me.

I seem to overlook Hals too often, as 2 of my favorites, joes and primitivo, are right down the street. But Hal's has something that neither of those places do well: STEAK, and I'm not really a beef person. Ive had a couple of their cuts, and their burgers, and they just have really good meat, every time I have been. Their ceasar salad is also really good, as well as their oxtail ravioli. I personally wouldnt recommend the sashami platter, as it is realllly thin sliced, and smothered in sauce. The prime rib is great, and they are really good at cooking it the way you order it.

Had 5:30 reservations on a Sunday. When we got their there was plenty of open tables but the Hostess sat us down at a table that was seat up for 4 and was very rude! Ordered the baby artichokes for an appetizer that took 25 minutes to get and the restaurant was not even full. Took about another 25 minutes to get entrees and my daughter was given the wrong meal. My friend did love her dish which was the Organic Tofu with vegetables. It was also my daughter's Birthday and I don't know of any restaurant that charges to bring out the birthday desert. Not going back any time soon!

I have been going to Hal's since the 1990's and it needs to change the menu up a bit. The burgers are too pricey for what they are, very boring and there is so much competition on the Westside for great burgers. The menu is so limited, expensive and the portions are so small I am usually hungry shortly after. If it was not for the bar scene, Hal's would not be happening. I will never go there for food again....so much better stuff around.

This place is a find in a revitalized area of Venice. I wasn't there on a night when there was jazz, but I would love to try it. Saturday night was fairly active and our first impression of the restaurant was mediocre based on the hostess who just did not want to let us sit where we wanted to, in spite of the fact that I made a reservation for a booth. The booths were almost empty when we arrived, so there was no reason why we couldn't pick our booth. After that, we had a novice waiter who was very attentive, if not fully informed on the menu. Overall, the experience was a good one, with the emphasis on the interesting interior with very good food. I will go back on a night when the jazz is in full swing.

We love Hal's, and go there as often as possible. Parking for brunch is pretty unbearable, but it's worth the effort for the basket of muffins (and a few biscuits) that come to the table after you order. The service is warm and attentive, and the food is good, honest, and fresh. Not only did we like our waiter, but the assistant waiter was also very helpful. I don't see these second servers as "bus boys" (though there is nothing wrong with that position) but as another person there to keep us happy. We'll be back soon.

We were a party of 4. Everyone had different entrees and all were wonderful. The calamari appetizer was perfect and could have been an entree for someone even though we shared ours among the 4 of us. Best turkey burger I have ever had, served with a Caesar salad--was a bargain at $14. Half price wine offerings on Tuesdays and Wednesdays are a nice plus for midweek dining. The dining room is quite large. Although attractive in a modern way, the hard surfaces and lack of vertical dividers of any kind, make the room somewhat noisy and lacks an intimate ambience at the tables. Request a booth if you will want privacy and intimacy. Service was friendly, correct and not intrusive.

we have been coming to Hal's for years, and our latest meal was the best ever! Fantastic duck, Manuel's salad with perfect dressing, terrific wines by the glass and great service. We are on severely salt-restricted diets (doctor's orders!) and they even made our French fries (best in the city!) without salt--and somehow managed to have the duck's wine reduction salt-less, too!
