This is a wonderful, informal restaurant. We go often; it's one of our favorite spots. It's not fussy, but not so relaxed that we don't feel special every time we go. The food is good, healthy and satisfying. The service is consistently attentive. The art is one of its best features. Great ambience, lively but not noisy atmosphere. Possible to have an intimate conversation in a room where lots of intimate conversations are taking place.

I'm a fan of the restaurant, which is why I chose Hal's for my birthday dinner. The ambiance is great--a Venice gem with fabulous art on the walls enlivening the minimalist decor. The waiter, though not surly was on the border of unfriendly and inattentive, never coming back to check on the food, never offering coffee refills or asking if we wanted more drinks. The fries I had been looking forward to as a birthday treat and usually reliable were awful. They looked great, but tasted like microwaved cardboard. The experience was so disappointing that I intend to call the manager at my first opportunity. Thanks for asking. I'm sorry to have to give such a poor report to a favorite restaurant. NL

Everything was spot-on, we were seated promptly for our reservation and the food was fantastic. I'd recommend sharing the meat/sausage penne as an appetizer. I guess the dessert menu was the only weak portion of the meal, nothing strikingly stood-out from the pack. Overall, it was perfect. The entire area/shopping district is especially lively for the "First Fridays" monthly Abbott Kinney neighborhood evening.

The food is always consistently good. This is one of my favorite restaurants. It's loud but never loud enough to distract your dinner. You can always sit upstairs where it's quiet. I love the fact that you can make a reservation and I've only had to wait once. The service is quick and friendly and I never feel rushed. I've taken many people to Hal's and they always want to come back. The menu caterers to everyone without being over the top. I've seen many kids there especially in the early evening. I've never felt put off by it although I wouldn't bring mine. Years ago I had a surprise birthday party there (upstairs) and everything was perfect. I highly recommend Hal's!

    OpenTable Diner Since 2008

Hal's used to be outstanding for food and atmosphere. Recently though, Hal's feels as though it's in need of a complete overhaul. The menu that hasn't been changed in years is feeling a little tired and the food on our last occasion was very poor - fries that had clearly been sitting around way too long before being brought out and badly cooked entree's for all four of us in the party. The attention to detail that Hal's was great for is now non-existent and for the price, I expect much more. Added to that, the noise level, I don't think I'll be going back in a hurry - there are too many other great restaurants in Venice to pick from like Lilly's and Joe's.

Everything was terrific, but we had one complaint. While thrilled at the basket of muffins and biscuits at the table, I must confess that the biscuits had an oddly bitter aftertaste. Something about that recipe is not working. Maybe too much baking powder? I have no idea. But everything else was wonderful. Thank you!

  • The food is too expensive
    OpenTable Diner Since 2007VIP
    Dined on 5/17/2008
The food is too expensive for what this place ultimately provides: Inattentive or at turns obsequious service - waiter asking to take your order 1 minute after handing you a menu or, when asked to provide a little time, disappears for 20 minutes - not exaggerating. I asked for a salad with only two ingredients; it came with only one. I asked the server for croutons, and he never brought them. Nor the cracked pepper. Knives weren't delivered with our entrees. Our drinks sat at the bar for over 10 minutes. I physically had to get up to find the waiter each time. The saucing is not seasonal or fresh, just heavy and overdone. At every turn our waiter failed. This place is hugely noisy. Otherwise, its a great bar.

We really enjoyed ourselves. Service was good, but not perfect, on a fairly busy evening. Noise level is high, which bothered one of our party. All entrees and appetizers were very good. Standouts were grilled artichoke appetizer and lamb osso bucco. Flat iron steak and roast chicken also were very good. Mixed seafood grill was good, but the most delicious element was the spicy creamed spinach under the seafood. Great space, wonderful, interesting art work, and good jazz. What else could you ask for?

I have been dining at Hal's off..due to where I live now.. and on since the late eighties. While the menu has rarely changed since then I am of the opinion that it's sameness is part of the restaurant's recipe for longevity. It is as comfortable as an old shoe. The environment fits Venice to a T. The mostly "comfort" food, is well prepared, generously proportioned in these days of small bites..I always have leftovers for the next night.. and always reliably good. The scene is eclectic and, unless off hours, vibrant. Said vibrancy and horrible acoustics = LOUD so those who don't like shouting or oft times reading lips should perhaps steer clear. Hal's feeds my soul as well as my stomach. And Hal himself is a gracious host. Thumbs Up!

we made our reservation a couple of weeks ago, and one week prior (while we were dining at Hal's) we requested a booth against the wall so we would be able to be in a "quieter" area of the restaurant. We showed up a few minutes ahead of our 7:00PM reservation only to find that our request was not honored - all booths had been taken and only one of the tables had been served their main course. We frequent Hal's (it's in our neighborhood), but normally as a walk in. We were disappointed that the time that we wanted to be able to converse with old friends that you did not honor our request. In the furture we'll be dining at one of the many other restaurants on Abbot Kinney, that honor requests.

It was so loud that I had to yell to be heard across the table. That alone made it miserable. The food was ok, at best. The menu was disappointing. There was ONE option for pasta, ONE option for chicken, ONE option for a hamburger, etc... The calamari was served with a slightly upgraded mayonnaise as a dip. Seriously? We just wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible. I will never go back, which is unfortunate, as I remember it being a great place a few years ago. P.S. The service was good.
