A word from Lüke San Antonio
San Antonio is now home to acclaimed Chef John Besh’s restaurant, Lüke, on the city's famed Riverwalk, Besh's first restaurant outside of his home state of Louisiana. The casual chic bistro features a menu of authentic Old World cuisine, combining classic German and French cooking techniques served in a warm and inviting space of stylish vintage interior, situated in San Antonio's popular downtown district.

At the helm of the kitchen of Lüke is Executive Chef John Russ, born and raised in New Orleans. At Restaurant August, Chef Russ began to form the relationship with John Besh and he learned the importance of forming relationships with farmers and fisherman, which would later be reinforced by his time working on farms in Alabama, New Hampshire, New York and Maryland. Chef Russ returned to the Besh Restaurant Group as Chef de Cuisine on the invitation of Chef Besh.

To complement its cuisine, Lüke offers an extensive wine list and beer selection.

Once again, another wonderful evening at Luke. This downtown San Antonio restaurant is paying attention to details. The food is always very good, and the staff members understand how to provide friendly, professional service. The atmosphere can be anything from the charming old-world interior, to the beautiful river view area next to the windows, to the spacious patio. Luke is one of the most enjoyable all-around dining experiences to be had downtown.

My husband and I had been looking for an excuse to go to SA so we could visit Luke. John Besh is his favorite tv chef. Our experience did not meet our expectations. His bowl of gumbo was a seafood gumbo that was primarily sausage, and his étouffée was salty and lacked character. My bam bam shrimp were delish with the spicy sauce on the side, but my crab and avocado salad was very salty. I'm sorry I didn't send it back. We enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, and the service was excellent, but we were both disappointed in the food.

Brunch was outstanding. We brought the kids and we had quail and waffles, a hamburger w/ fries, the kids chicken tenders w/ fries, and the shrimp and grits... and it was all fantastic. The coffee was also fabulous without being too caffeinated (we had two pots). And if you don't order dessert, you are doing yourself a disservice.

Great food, but more Louisiana French than just French. Host was very friendly and accommodating, but table Service was hit and miss and noise level was way too high. Music blaring from the bar, along with tile floors and tin ceiling created an unpleasant echoing effect and was way too much to have a conversation. Eating outside would have been better.

They had a great variety of food and beverage. We opted for craft and belgian beers but they also had a good wine selection and house made cocktails. Service started a little spotty because it took a minute for us to be greeted and got a little confusing with multiple entrances and hostess stands. Our waitress quickly redeemed herself by making good food and beverage suggestions and finding a description of the beer that she was not familiar with. We opted for the petite raw seafood tower which was an unique dining experience in itself. It had a small but scenic patio and got a little noisy. Good variety of seafood, game and beef dishes ranging from cajun and french to traditional southern.

After being unable to find any suitable restaurants available for a pre-theatre/birthday dinner on a Monday night -- most restaurants at The Pearl and in Southtown are closed on Mondays -- I settled on Lüke after a friend told me that she had received a coupon with her season tickets to The Majestic. Honestly, I feel the restaurant really tried its best -- prices were fair, but the food was underwhelming and slow from the kitchen; the service was good, but very inexperienced; and the ambiance was sparse -- the white/blue-striped dish towels as napkins came across as cheap, rather than kitchy. I would recommend it for lunch on the Riverwalk or a casual dinner if you happen to be in the area, not for destination dining or special occasions.

A new best place on the San Antonio riverwalk, this fascinating combination of French, German, & New Orleans, is poised for superstar status. The food is the best in the city with incredible texture, taste, freshness, and inventiveness. The flavors lingered delightfully for hours. The only thing keeping this restaurant from heaven is slow service. Not yet, but almost heaven.

Visited this restaurant twice, once for happy hour on the patio and once for dinner inside. The food and cocktails were delicious, but the service was incredibly slow both times. The wait staff seems very disorganized and for dinner our waiter seemed to have to bus tables as well as wait on them. Food is great, but unless you have a lot of time to wait for your cocktails and food you could do better.

Luke's is usually a good spot to eat prior to show, but this last visit was subpar. Waiter not attentive, never received bread for table. Margarita, which I usually recommend, was blah. Dessert was still frozen when served and it wasn't ice cream. Hope thus was just an off night and service improves.

Four of us dined, and the evening was a hit. The others loved the new featured cocktail (something with cucumbers and strawberries) and they enjoyed the off menu entree, as well (fresh catch almondine.) I had the Choucroute Maison, something I'd been looking forward to since we made the reservation. Although the pork shank was unbelievably tender, it lacked the intense flavor I'd come to expect from smoked meats, and the pork belly (i was most looking forward to this) was very underwhelming: it was tough and also lacked flavor. The house made sauerkraut was very good, however. Rob was spot-on with service - gracious and attentive. We have already recommended Luke to others.

Our reservations for 2 were at 5:45pm Thursday because we had 7:30pm theater tickets. There were an abundance of open tables in the restaurant but we we were led to a table for two in a corner beside the elevator. Really?? I asked if a better table was available & we were offered a nice table by the windows overlooking the river. Much better! The size of the cloth napkins was nice & they were clean, but dingy and very stained, not what I would expect in an upscale restaurant and not too good for the appetite. But things began to look up after that. We had a delightful server who was very friendly and attentive. The food was delicious, the service was great but not rushed. We had time for a leisurely walk to the Magestic for the show.

The food was excellent -- Bam Bam shrimp -- nice kick of fire in the sauce, avocado/lump crab meat stack salad -- delicious and perfect portion and the shrimp and grits entree (very good!! I would put this entree up against any of the same dish I had to eat in NOLA!! The signature Bloody Mary (with beer chaser) was EXCELLENT!!! Highly recommend it!! The piped in music was a bit loud and our waiter, though very attentive, appeared to be overbooked on the number of tables he was attending. Proximity (within short walking distance) to the Majestic Theatre makes this the perfect choice for theater goers. Also located on the scenic Riverwalk.

Decided to try this spot for dinner on a Wednesday evening in late April during a business trip. We wanted to sit outside, but there was a big party outside. Our greeter looked like she didn't want to be there. Service was extremely slow. Took almost 2 hours to receive dinner and dessert! For the price of the dinner items, the food was not worth it. Ordered the mussels, and they were tasty. It was a large amount, but not worth $25+. Tried to bread pudding and it was doused in alcohol.

the fresh oysters were perfect and at happy hour prices, they were a bargain. The tempura shrimp were very good. The drum was very flavorful. The only mis was the French 75, it was not served in a flute and for some reason it had quite a head on it. The wait staff was attentive, there just happen to be too many customers for each waiter.

Celebrating our friend's birthday, we were treated in a very special manner. We tried several things off the starter menu, a couple of entrees and a dessert. Our overall favorites were the beet salad starter, which was luscious and fresh and the tempura battered shrimp, which were called "Bang, Bang Shrimp." They were possibly some of the best shrimp we have ever had, including sauce and crispy batter. The restaurant is large, but, homey and includes a view of the San Antonio Riverwalk. Our waiter was helpful and attentive. Overall, it was a satisfying experience.

Came here for Sunday Easter brunch, excited because it's a Besh restaurant. We had a group of 8, 2 of us were served 30 minutes after the rest of our party because of some mix-up or mistake with the server not getting the order in. So, to make up for the mishandled entrees, the manager gave us one (1) complimentary dessert. The waitress gave us the dessert menu and told us as if they were doing us a favor. Please, 30 minutes for a lackluster entree rushed and not executed properly because of your mistake cannot be undone with a very small and overpriced dessert. Never going back and not recommending.
