A word from Lüke San Antonio
San Antonio is now home to acclaimed Chef John Besh’s restaurant, Lüke, on the city's famed Riverwalk, Besh's first restaurant outside of his home state of Louisiana. The casual chic bistro features a menu of authentic Old World cuisine, combining classic German and French cooking techniques served in a warm and inviting space of stylish vintage interior, situated in San Antonio's popular downtown district.

At the helm of the kitchen of Lüke is Executive Chef John Russ, born and raised in New Orleans. At Restaurant August, Chef Russ began to form the relationship with John Besh and he learned the importance of forming relationships with farmers and fisherman, which would later be reinforced by his time working on farms in Alabama, New Hampshire, New York and Maryland. Chef Russ returned to the Besh Restaurant Group as Chef de Cuisine on the invitation of Chef Besh.

To complement its cuisine, Lüke offers an extensive wine list and beer selection.

Everything was great. We had the (large) flammenkuche for an appetizer. The Allan Benton bacon is awesome. For dinner we had the mussels and the shrimp & grits. Both were good sized plates, although the bowl of mussels was enormous. Again, both very good. For dessert we went for the bread pudding and the holiday mulled wine. The bread pudding was great, although very sweet (which I like) and rich. The wine selection seemed above average, but the beer selection was excellent, and the cocktail I had was well-made. Our server, Ed, was great. He let us relax and enjoy our meal. Overall, we really liked this place. It's perfect for an upscale meal without the pretentious upscale atmosphere. Also, it's very reasonably-priced for the Riverwalk.

Overall a great new restaurant for San Antonio! The food was good and unique. Our waitress seemed to know little about the menu. Several questions regarding the menu were answered with I don't know or a vague explanation. It's only been open a few weeks and I can't wait to visit the upper level where you can watch your food being prepared!!

  • Lüke provides a good selection
    OpenTable Diner Since 2010

Lüke provides a good selection of Cajun and German cuisine in the middle of downtown San Antonio. We tried the onion tart appetizer which is made of grilled onions, melted cheese and generous bacon bits specially smoked and provided to Lüke by someone in Alabama. The daily special offers a combination of soup, entree of the day (pork cheek on Thursday), and bread pudding. The bread pudding is very tasty with pecan halves mixed with the pudding. The staff is very attentive and make sure you are well served during the experience. I highly recommend visiting Lüke, especially if you're attending an event on Houston St.

Food was good except for potatoes underneath the bratwurst. Super greasy..almost inedible. Burger and fries were terrific. The house salad was very yummy. Atmosphere is very hotel restaurant'ish. Rather stark...no tablecloths, kitchen towels for napkins, wine served in very small beer-type glasses, etc. makes it seem extremely casual. Condiments are served in the little glass bottles you get with room service. Weird. Just not super impressed and not what we expected.

We were disappointed in the atmosphere and how open and loud it is. There are no booths or "cozy" areas. It seems like more of a breakfast/brunch/lunch atmosphere. We had raw oysters which were good. I liked my salad and chicken. My husband's jaegerssnitzel (spelling?) was very dry and just did not hit the spot. I think the atmosphere just killed the food for us to be honest.

Cannot believe that it has only been open for two weeks. Everything was absolutely perfect. The Express Menu is a delight. Can't wait to try another menu selection. This may well become out "regular" pre-theatre restaurant. Great food, generous servings, reasonable price.

A fantastic addition to the downtown dining scene. Menu offers a creative fusion of German/French/creole elements that sets this restaurant apart from any other in San Antonio. Ordered jagerschnitzel, shrimp and grits and they were unique and well crafted renditions of the originals. Pate was more classic in style although we did stick to the basic pate, there were two other Pates that looked more exciting and will look forward to those next time. Portions are generous for fine dining. Did not order any raw bar on this visit but selection looks great. Bar menu is most thoughtfully put together, featuring regional wines, local beers, Belgian ales, and cocktails. Worth a stop in for drinks alone. Service was warm and attentive.

We dined with another couple. I had the fish, it was very bland, didn't taste like fish at all. My husband got a German dish, that he gets all the time at other restaurants, and he had to send it back, it was so bad!! And he is NOT a picky person!! The drinks were very good and the service was wondrful...the food was very disappointing...

  • If great food & polished service
    OpenTable Diner Since 2010

If great food & polished service is what you're seeking, Luke won't disappoint. Our party sampled the menu in broad sweeps & were delighted with everything we tasted. Unique, inspired flavors combined with local produce & meats. Server was polished, attentive and accomodating. The kitchen let him down a bit when it took 4 requests for a side of dressing for the fried oyster salad. With the well-thought of Cervantes as General Manager those kinds of shortfalls will be minimized. If you want vibrant people watching you'll find it. But, this is not a restaurant for an intimate dining experience. The noise level, which is euphemistically described as "energetic", for us was just plain noisey chaos. Won't be back due to noise.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2010

The service at this restaurant started out very poor, but we were soon given a new server who was quite good. The appetizers were terrific (grass fed beef tartare and the crab bisque) but the entrees (wild boar chop and pork po boy) really missed the mark. The boar chop was over cooked and dry and both entrees and accompanying frites arrived only warm.

Luke was much more casual than we had anticipated, but the food was definately worth it. My companion had shrimp and grits which were scrumptious. I had the po boy, which had a great blend of flavors. And the fries? To Die For. Definately will return.

The menu had many unusual and interesting food items. We had several appetizers ranging from pate to oysters on the half shell, all very good. Dinner was equally good with the four of us making sure we got several bites of everything on the table, moules & frites, skirt steak, salad and gumbo. Excellent meal. Service was fun and energetic. We all agreed it was a great meal.

From the very beginning, our evening at Luke was poor and barely got better. Even with a 6:45 pm reservation for two, we were given a terrible table. When we asked to move, we were given an equally poor table but didn't push it. I wondered later why we weren't offered a table upstairs or in a better location - other couples were seated at 4-tops after us, but we were shoved in a 2-top against the wall. Our 1st drink order was incorrect; then our waitress promised wine that took forever to arrive. Our salads were sent down while we were still eating our apps, so we felt rushed but sent them back. When the salads reappeared, they were underwhelming - blue cheese salad had 3 tiny cheese crumbs, and presentation awful. One highlight - the pate.

The food is unpretentious and absolutely delicious. The wait staff is courteous, prompt, and knowledgeable about the menu items. The noise level is very high. With even just a few people talking, the echoes from the ceiling and bar equipment make conversation nearly impossible. All in all, excellent restaurant, especially if you like really good food. Not the place for a romantic evening, though.

Having been many times to Luke in NOLA, we were thrilled to discover that our expectations of great food were exceeded! Friendly staff to greet you, foodservers that anticipate your every need - and best of all, absolutely amazing food. The chef knows his stuff! Louisiana favorites, with some new dishes Texas-style. Innovative pairings of flavors, especially the appetizers (bring a crowd and share). Great presentation. Some good Texas wine offerings. We intend to return and try everything on the menu! Great value for dinner.
